BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar disorder often endorse dysfunctional beliefs consistent with cognitive models of bipolar disorder (Beck, 1976; Mansell, 2007).
AIMS: The present study sought to assess whether young adult offspring of those with bipolar disorder would also endorse these beliefs, independent of their own mood episode history.
METHOD: Participants (N = 89) were young adult college students with a parent with bipolar disorder (n = 27), major depressive disorder (MDD; n = 30), or no mood disorder (n = 32). Semi-structured interviews of the offspring were used to assess diagno

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disease of central nervous system characterized by optic neuritis and longitudinally extensive acute transverse myelitis. NMO patients have cognitive dysfunctions but other clinical symptoms of brain origin are rare. In the present study, we aimed to investigate cognitive functions and brain volume in NMO. The study population consisted of 28 patients with NMO and 28 healthy control subjects matched for age, sex and educational level. We applied a French translation of the Brief Repeatable Battery (BRB-N) to the NMO patients. Using SIENAx for globa

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunctions are being recognized as a major roadblock to functional recovery in patients with bipolar disorders. Little is known about the treatment of these cognitive dysfunctions. Donepezil, approved to treat memory dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease, is evaluated for cognitive dysfunctions common in bipolar disorder. Of concern is some evidence that donepezil may trigger affective instability.
METHODS: All bipolar disordered patients in a private practice setting treated with donepezil for memory problems were analyzed. Patients were assessed for memory improvement a

Although cognitive dysfunctions in psychosis have classically been associated with schizophrenia, there is clinical evidence that some bipolar patients show cognitive disturbances either during acute phases or in remission periods. The authors critically review the data on cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder. The main computerized databases (Medline, Psychological Abstracts, Current Contents) have been consulted crossing the terms 'cognitive deficits', 'neuropsychology', 'intellectual impairment', 'mania', 'depression' and 'bipolar disorder'. Changes in the fluency of thought and speech,

This study was conducted to examine the role of childhood behavioral disorders (CBDs) and residual attention deficit disorder (ADDRT) in alcohol-related cognitive dysfunction in male and female subjects. Alcoholic (n = 44 females, 56 males) and control (n = 40 females, 40 males) subjects completed assessments that included measures of CBDs, ADDRT, and cognitive and psychosocial functioning. Cognitive tests were specifically designed to assess efficiency in function. As expected, alcoholics were inferior to controls in their cognitive efficiency [F(1,171) = 10.43, p = 0.0015]. Alcoholics report

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of Alzheimer's disease (AD) on general and specific neuropsychological function. Thirty-five subjects diagnosed with AD were compared to 30 medically normal aging control subjects using measures from the Halstead-Reitan Battery (HRB). All AD subjects were classified as "probable" AD (NINCDS-ADRDA) and found to be in the "late confusional" to "early dementia" stages of the disease (Global Deterioration Scale, GDS = 4-5). The AD group performed significantly worse than the controls on all measures of general neuropsychological functi

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a neurofunctional disorder resulting from sepsis, primarily manifested as acute brain dysfunction and long-term cognitive decline. This study utilizes the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model to investigate the role of Gasdermin E (GSDME)-mediated pyroptosis in hippocampal astrocytes in the pathogenesis of SAE-related cognitive dysfunction, as well as the therapeutic potential of geniposide, an active compound from the traditional Chinese medicine formula An-gong Niu-huang pill (Ag-NhP). Our results demonstrate that CLP significantly upregulates GSD

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common central nervous system complication in elderly patients after surgery, characterized by cognitive changes, including impaired learning and memory, reduced attention, and mental disorders and personality changes in severe cases. Despite extensive research, effective targeted therapies remain elusive, underscoring the urgent need to elucidate their molecular mechanisms and identify novel therapeutic targets. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), major transcription products of the human genome, are highly expressed in the central nervous system and play

Ischemic stroke has a higher survival rate and is more likely to result in cognitive impairment than hemorrhagic stroke. The primary pathological mechanism underlying cognitive impairment involves dysfunction of neural circuits and damage to specific brain regions. This review aims to investigate the role of the hippocampus in cognitive impairment following a stroke. A review of the literature suggests that the hippocampus is a metabolically active structure that is easily involved in various metabolic states, such as hypoxia and hypoglycaemia. The functional changes in hippocampal cells assoc

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is commonly accompanied by cognitive dysfunction and dementia, which, in turn, increase the risk of hospitalization, cardiovascular events and death. Over the last 30 years, only four studies focused on genetic markers of cognitive impairment in CKD and kidney failure (KF), indicating a significant gap in research. These studies suggest potential genetic predispositions to cognitive decline in CKD patients but also underscore the necessity for more comprehensive studies. Seventeen reports have established connections between cognitive function and kidney disease ma

The integrated stress response (ISR) is a highly conserved network essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and cognitive function. Here, we investigated how persistent ISR activation impacts cognitive performance, primarily focusing on a PPP1R15B R658C genetic variant associated with intellectual disability. By generating a novel mouse model that mimics this human condition, we revealed that this variant destabilizes the PPP1R15B•PP1 phosphatase complex, resulting in chronic ISR activation, impaired protein synthesis, and deficits in long-term memory. Importantly, we found that the cogn

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The complex immune-brain interactions and the regulatory role of mitochondria in the immune response suggest that mitochondrial damage reported in schizophrenia (SZ) may be related to abnormalities observed in immune and brain functions.
STUDY DESIGN: Mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA CN), a biomarker of mitochondrial function, was assessed in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) of 121 healthy individuals and 118 SZ patients before and after 8 weeks of antipsychotic treatment, and a meta-analysis related to blood mtDNA CN was conducted. Plasma C-reactive protein (

Among the non-motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), cognitive impairment is one of the most common and disabling. It can occur either early or late during the disease, and it is heterogeneous in terms of its clinical manifestations, such as Subjective Cognitive Dysfunction (SCD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Parkinson's Disease Dementia (PDD). The aim of the present review is to delve deeper into the molecular mechanisms underlying cognitive decline in PD. This is extremely important to delineate the guidelines for the differential diagnosis and prognosis of the dysf

Cognitive dysfunction is an important non-motor symptom in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that has a negative impact on survival and caregiver burden. It shows a wide spectrum ranging from subjective cognitive decline to frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and covers various cognitive domains, mainly executive/attention, language and verbal memory deficits. The frequency of cognitive impairment across the different ALS phenotypes ranges from 30% to 75%, with up to 45% fulfilling the criteria of FTD. Significant genetic, clinical, and pathological heterogeneity reflects deficits in various cogni
