Impaired cortical neuronal homeostasis and cognition after diffuse traumatic brain injury are dependent on microglia and type I interferon responses.

Neuropsychiatric complications including depression and cognitive decline develop in the years after traumatic brain injury (TBI), negatively affecting quality of life. Microglial and type 1 interferon (IFN-I) responses are associated with the transition from acute to chronic neuroinflammation after diffuse TBI in mice. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if impaired neuronal homeostasis and increased IFN-I responses intersected after TBI to cause cognitive impairment. Here, the RNA profile of neurons and microglia after TBI (single nucleus RNA-sequencing) with or without microgli

Effects of Combining a Brief Cognitive Intervention with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Pain Tolerance: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective for treating chronic pain, and a growing literature shows the potential analgesic effects of minimally invasive brain stimulation. However, few studies have systematically investigated the potential benefits associated with combining approaches. The goal of this pilot laboratory study was to investigate the combination of a brief cognitive restructuring intervention and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in affecting pain tolerance. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind,

Learning Without Neurons: A Review of Associative Memory in Protists.

For decades, the capacity for associative learning was considered a hallmark of multicellular organisms possessing complex nervous systems. However, a growing body of evidence in the field of basal cognition is challenging this neuro-centric paradigm, demonstrating that unicellular eukaryotes, or protozoans, exhibit sophisticated behavioral plasticity. This review synthesizes historical and contemporary research into associative learning-specifically classical and operant conditioning-in prominent protozoan models such as Paramecium, Stentor, and the acellular slime mold Physarum polycephalum.

Elaeagnus angustifolia L. Polysaccharide Alleviates High-Fat High-Fructose Diet (HFFD)-Induced Cognitive Impairment by Modulating the Gut-Liver-Brain Axis.

Cognitive impairment induced by a high-fat high-fructose diet (HFFD) is associated with gut-liver-brain axis dysfunction, yet whether polysaccharide intervention can modulate this axis to achieve cognitive rescue remains unexplored. This study investigated whether Elaeagnus angustifolia polysaccharide (EAP) is associated with protection against HFFD-induced cognitive decline by modulating this axis. Male C57BL/6J mice (n = 15/group) received Control, HFFD, HFFD + LEAP (300 mg/kg/day EAP), or HFFD + HEAP (800 mg/kg/day EAP) for 14 weeks. HEAP improved spatial memory, reducing escape latency by

Modeling the Structural Relationships of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptom Severity Based on Hostile Attribution, Perceived Stress, and Cognitive Bias With the Mediating Role of Negative Meta-emotion.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder that significantly impairs quality of life and is commonly associated with psychological factors. This study explores the mediating role of negative meta-emotions, defined as emotional responses to one's own emotions (eg, shame about anxiety), in the relationship between IBS symptom severity, perceived stress, cognitive bias, and hostile attribution. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: This descriptive-correlational and cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 and involved 300 patients with IBS, 18 to 60 years of a

Prevention of pathological gambling: a randomized controlled trial.

Although the gambling industry is expanding rapidly throughout North America and around the world, there are only a few empirically evaluated programs aimed at the prevention of pathological gambling (PG). The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of a new prevention program aimed at PG. The Stop & Think! program was designed to teach at-risk video lottery terminal (VLT) gamblers cognitive restructuring and problem-solving skills that may help to prevent the development of PG. These skills were taught through a variety of methods - including an automated educational presentati

Adolescents and Young Adults Living with Congenital Heart Disease: Coping, Stress Reactivity, and Emotional Functioning.

Living with congenital heart disease (CHD) presents survivors with numerous stressors, which may contribute to emotional problems. This study examined (a) whether coping with CHD-related stress predicts symptoms of depression and anxiety, and (b) whether associations between coping and emotional distress are moderated by involuntary stress reactivity. Adolescents and young adults diagnosed with CHD (Mage = 26.4) were recruited from pediatric and adult outpatient cardiology clinics. Participants (N = 168) completed online self-report measures. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed

Thinking about social situations: the moderated effects of imposing structure.

Previous research indicates that people with social anxiety disorder tend to experience escalating distress when thinking about past social situations. We investigated whether such distress could be limited by either an intervention or the participant's pre-existing abilities. Participants were 38 undergraduate students who reported problematic levels of social anxiety. Participants who endorsed a poor ability to purposefully engage with thoughts about stressful social situations reported a deterioration of mood after 25 min of unstructured writing about a recent problematic social situation,

Treatment of the agoraphobic dental patient.

The dental-phobic patient is rarely motivated to seek treatment. When this type of patient does, it is difficult to perform the dental work without repeated interruptions due to the high anxiety being displayed. Many dental phobics are actually agoraphobic, and this further complicates the matter. The agoraphobic dental patient mislabels any physiologic changes that are experienced as a prelude to disaster, or horrific consequences, and something there is no control over. This type of patient looks to depend on "safe" places (like home) and "safe" people (like spouses and doctors). The physiol

Clinical Utility of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent Restructured Form in the Assessment of Internalizing and Externalizing Disorders in Adolescents: A Preliminary Approach.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent Restructured Form (MMPI-ARF) can differentiate between two groups of adolescents, one diagnosed with internalizing disorders and another with externalizing disorders, and examined the clinical utility of the MMPI-A-RF by examining which subscales can significantly discriminate between these two groups. METHODS: A total of 105 adolescents aged 13-18 years completed the MMPI-A-RF (53 internalizing disorder and 52 externalizing disorder groups). Independent t-test, chi-square test (χ2), and dis

Network structure of rumination and resilience in adolescents with traumatic experiences: A comparison of PTSD and non-PTSD groups.

BACKGROUND: Prior research on rumination and resilience in trauma contexts has primarily utilized traditional statistical methods, single-sample designs, and community-based participants. As a result, symptom-level interaction patterns and network structures across varying risk levels remain unclear. This study aims to address these limitations by comparing the network structures of rumination and resilience among adolescents exposed to a public health crisis, both with and without PTSD. METHODS: A total of 1,273 adolescents (mean age = 13.84 years, 50.4% female) from post-COVID-19 China part

Coping, symptoms, and insomnia among people with heart failure during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AIMS: Increases in stress, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and sleep problems have been reported during the Covid-19 pandemic, and people with chronic medical conditions such as heart failure (HF) are especially vulnerable. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which sleep characteristics, sleep-related cognitions, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and changes in these phenomena over time predict ways of coping with pandemic-related stress among participants in the HeartSleep study, a randomized controlled trial of the effects of cognitive behavioural therapy for inso

Cognitive- behavioral psychotherapy of patients with tinnitus.

In this work 112 studies were reviewed and 21 of them were considered as more reliable and more credible. It is well known that Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most valid approach regarding its effectiveness. There are many variations of CBT used in patients with tinnitus, but the most effective appears to be the Cognitive-Behavioural Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Also, treatment-variations consist in the use of hearing aids, and psycho-education. The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a third-generation psychological intervention invented by Steven Hayes in 1986. This therap

Managing emotions in panic disorder: A systematic review of studies related to emotional intelligence, alexithymia, emotion regulation, and coping.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Panic disorder is defined by recurring and unexpected panic attacks, accompanied by anticipatory anxiety about future attacks and their consequences. This generally involves avoiding situations and behaviors that can produce panic attacks (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). Among anxiety disorders, panic disorder is associated with some of the greatest burdens in terms of personal suffering, occupational disability, and societal cost. The objective of this article is to systematically identify and review the empirical literature on emotional management pr

Experiences and Perceptions of Problem Gamblers on Cognitive and Exposure Therapies When Taking Part in a Randomised Controlled Trial: A Qualitative Study.

In South Australia (SA) problem gambling is mainly a result of the widespread availability of electronic gaming machines. A key treatment provider in SA offers free cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT) to help-seeking problem gamblers. The CBT program focuses on the treatment of clients' urge to gamble using exposure therapy (ET) and cognitive therapy (CT) to restructure erroneous gambling beliefs. The aim of this study was to explore treatment specific and non-specific effects for CT alone and ET alone using qualitative interviews. Interviewees were a sub-sample of participants from a rand

PTSD symptoms and suicide risk in veterans: Serial indirect effects via depression and anger.

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates are higher in veterans compared to the general population, perhaps due to trauma exposure. Previous literature highlights depressive symptoms and anger as contributors to suicide risk. PTSD symptoms may indirectly affect suicide risk by increasing the severity of such cognitive-emotional factors. METHOD: A sample of community dwelling veterans (N=545) completed online surveys, including the PTSD Checklist-Military Version, Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised, Multidimensional Health Profile-Psychosocial Functioning, and Differential Emotions Scale -IV. Changes in cognitive task performance across the menstrual cycle.

Menstrual-cycle-related changes in estrogen were expected to differentially affect various cognitive tests. Specifically, the estrogen peak occurring at midcycle in ovulatory women was expected to facilitate performance of highly practiced "automatized" tasks and to impair performance of "perceptual-restructuring" tasks, compared with performance of these tasks in the postovulatory phase of the cycle when progesterone is thought to counteract the action of estrogen. Perceptual-restructuring tasks are defined as tasks in which the initial percepts to obvious stimulus attributes are wrong and mu
