OBJECTIVE: Patients with hydrocephalus secondary to third ventricular colloid cysts can require bilateral external ventricular drain (EVD) placement while awaiting surgery. However, some patients could develop auto-fenestration of the septum pellucidum (AFSP) and only require 1 EVD. We evaluated our experience with bedside iohexol ventriculography and staged EVD placement for patients with obstructive hydrocephalus.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified 34 patients who had been treated for third ventricular colloid cysts (2013-2016). The preoperative and postoperative data, including age, se

The authors report their experience with Colloid Cysts of the third ventricle (9 cases treated between 1983 and 1989). Eight of them were punctured using stereotactic approach; five cysts were completely evacuated and the patients are free of recurrence. In three cases, tapping was impossible or the cyst insufficiently evacuated and the patients were secondary operated on (open microsurgical approach). The last case was directly operated on. Colloid cysts cured by stereotactic puncture were all hypo or iso-dense at C.T. scan and had a diameter of more than 1 cm. All these cases have had a M.R.

BACKGROUND: The interhemispheric transcallosal (ITA) and endoscopic approaches (EA) are established treatments for third ventricle colloid cysts (TVCCs); however, their relative parenchymal impact and the progression of associated MRI changes from early to late postoperative stages remain undefined.
OBJECTIVE: To compare early volumetric MRI findings after ITA and EA for TVCC resection and determine whether early parenchymal injury persisted on late imaging.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (ITA, 13; EA, 10) with early and late postoperative MRI were retrospectively reviewed. Early T2/FLAIR hy

AIM: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle represent 0.5-2% of all intracranial tumors. Several surgical approaches have been proposed for the treatment of these lesions and endoscopy is the most recent one, but the best treatment still remains controversial. We decided to treat colloid cysts with endoscopic approach since 1999. In this paper we present our results in 6 consecutive cases admitted at our institution from 1999 to 2004.
METHODS: There were 4 males and 2 females. The mean age was 51.6 (range 29-77). All the cysts were symptomatic. The presenting symptom was headache in 4 patients,

Two cases of sudden death due to colloid cysts of the third ventricle are presented with a review of the literature. In the first case, a 40-year-old woman suffered an acute onset of severe frontal headache after an intercontinental air flight. The next day, she was found comatous and died 7 h after admission to a hospital. In the second case, a 33-year-old man with a medical history of recurrent headaches was found dead in his car. Autopsy in both cases revealed a colloid cyst of the third ventricle and hydrocephalus involving the lateral ventricles. These cases demonstrate that fatal cases s

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign endodermal intracranial lesions that typically arise in the third ventricle of the human brain. Although uncommon, obstructing cerebrospinal fluid pathways may cause clinical signs. Although cases in atypical sites such as the cerebellum or pontomesencephalic region have occasionally been described, no reports exist of colloid cysts within the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) in either veterinary or human medicine.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year-old castrated male Pomeranian presented with ataxia and excessive salivation. The neurological examination was largely u

Introduction: Colloid cysts are rare intracranial tumors that can cause obstructive hydrocephalus, a potentially life-threatening condition. Despite being typically benign, they often present with insidious symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis and catastrophic outcomes. Case Report: A 29-year-old woman presented with a two-month history of worsening headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Neuroimaging revealed a colloid cyst obstructing the third ventricle, resulting in hydrocephalus. Despite emergency placement of an external ventricular drain, the patient's neurological condition deteriorated rap

INTRODUCTION: Colloid cysts are relatively uncommon lesions in the pediatric population. The xanthogranulomatous (XG) variant is very rare with less than 30 reported cases.
CASE REPORT: In this report, the patient was a 13-year-old boy who presented with transient episodes of headache with blurring of vision. His MRI brain showed a T2 hyperintense well-defined cystic lesion, with an eccentrically located T2 hypointense partially enhancing nodule, at the foramen of Monro. He underwent middle frontal gyrus transcortical, transchoroidal gross total excision of the cyst. The histopathology of the

BACKGROUND: Third ventricular colloid cysts are benign but may cause acute hydrocephalus, raised intracranial pressure, decreased consciousness level, and sudden death. These ventricular colloid cysts associated with stunned myocardium are rarely reported in the literature. This study reported a case of a third ventricular colloid cyst presented as acute hydrocephalus complicated with severe neurogenic pulmonary edema, stunned myocardium, and heart failure, which survived at the end.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with one day history of headache,

BACKGROUND: Colloid cyst is a gelatin-containing cyst in the brain almost always found in the third ventricle. The specific shape and location of these cysts, a round well-delineated mass in the rostral part of the third ventricle adjacent to the foramen of Monro, on imaging are the main findings for diagnosis. Several masses of the third ventricle masquerading colloid cysts on images have been reported. Based on different surgical approaches, preoperative misdiagnosis of colloid cyst may have great impact on prognosis.
METHODS: We report 2 cases that presented with severe headache and hydroc

BACKGROUND: Despite their unfavorable locations, lesions of the third ventricle can be successfully removed via an interhemispheric, transcallosal approach. In cases with normal ventricular anatomy, this approach requires unilateral or bilateral identification of the foramen of Monro.
TECHNIQUE: However, in the presence of abnormal ventricular configuration such as cavum septum pellucidum (CSP), this basic knowledge needs to be modified. After routine callosotomy, there may be a confusion while entering the CSP due to the invisualization of ventricular landmarks such as the foramen of Monro,

Ectopic colloid cysts are rare, benign, congenital lesions derived from the endoderm. They are most commonly located in the anterior portion of the third ventricle but can occasionally arise in the sellar/suprasellar region [1, 7, 12]. We report a pediatric patient with an ectopic colloid cyst presenting with short stature and central diabetes insipidus-a location not previously documented in children. Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal resection achieved subtotal removal with preservation of the pituitary stalk, and the patient remained symptom-free at 21-month follow-up.

Colloid cysts are benign growths commonly found in the third ventricle at the foramen of Monro. They can be asymptomatic or present with a variety of symptoms, including headaches, diplopia, memory problems, psychosis, urinary incontinence, and ataxia. Obstructive hydrocephalus from a colloid cyst is caused by a blockage of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from the lateral ventricles at the foramen of Monro. Colloid cysts have rarely been reported to cause sudden death. Here we present the case of a 32-year-old female with a known history of a colloid cyst who presented with a headache and transien

Colloid cysts are histologically well defined and consist of three main components, a capsule, with an underlying epithelial layer, and a mucinous heart. In our case, we present a 35-year-old female with acute deterioration of level of consciousness. An emergent CT scan showed a cystic lesion occluding the intraventricular foramen. The lesion was endoscopically excised through a transfrontal approach. Microscopic examination of the resected specimen revealed hyphal-like structures (HLS). This rare finding was first described by Dodds and Powers in 1977 and, in its microscopic nature, it mimics

We describe the clinical presentation and CT findings of a 10-year-old female patient about half an hour prior to cardiorespiratory arrest and subsequent death, resulting from brainstem compression and herniation caused by hydrocephalus and intracranial hypertension, produced by a previously undetected colloid cyst occluding foramina of Monro on both sides. While third ventricular colloid cysts are rare lesions, sudden unpredicted deaths have been attributed to undetected colloid cysts in many case reports, with some authors even considering that 10% of colloid cyst patients suffer such ends.

OBJECTIVE Many colloid cyst patients present with obstructive hydrocephalus that resolves after resection of the cyst. However, a proportion of patients with these cysts will require cerebrospinal fluid shunting after tumor resection, despite resolution of the obstruction at the foramina of Monro. The goal of this study was to determine if colloid cyst size or preoperative ventricular volume predicted the need for postresection shunting. METHODS In a retrospective study design, ICD-9 codes 742.2 (colloid cyst) and 348.0 (brain cyst) were used to identify patients who had undergone resection of
