[Factors associated with fatal trauma in Medellín (Colombia) motorcyclists].

INTRODUCTION: Motorcycles have come into widespread use as mode of transport and commuting to work. Given the degree of trauma occurring in motorcycle accidents, this increased use has generated adverse consequences for public health. Categorization of factors associated with these events can form the basis for prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: The characteristics of person, time, place, vehicle and circumstances of occurrence were described for motorcycle accidents involving rider injury, and the associations were explored with fatal trauma in the city of Medellín, Colombia, in 2005-2008. Climate-based risk models for Fasciola hepatica in Colombia.

A predictive Fasciola hepatica model, based on the growing degree day-water budget (GDD-WB) concept and the known biological requirements of the parasite, was developed within a geographical information system (GIS) in Colombia. Climate-based forecast index (CFI) values were calculated and represented in a national-scale, climate grid (18 x 18 km) using ArcGIS 9.3. A mask overlay was used to exclude unsuitable areas where mean annual temperature exceeded 25 °C, the upper threshold for development and propagation of the F. hepatica life cycle. The model was then validated and further developed

Phylogenetic reconstruction of dengue virus type 2 in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is perhaps the most important viral re-emergent disease especially in tropical and sub-tropical countries, affecting about 50 million people around the world yearly. In Colombia, dengue virus was first detected in 1971 and still remains as a major public health issue. Although four viral serotypes have been recurrently identified, dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) has been involved in the most important outbreaks during the last 20 years, including 2010 when the fatality rate highly increased. As there are no major studies reviewing virus origin and genotype distribution in

Antiretroviral drug resistance in HIV-infected patients in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Systematically obtained data on antiretroviral (ARV) resistance in Colombia are lacking. Local estimates of resistance are needed to guide testing, therapy, and policy. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in ARV-naïve individuals and in patients with first ARV failure. Genotypic resistance testing was performed using Viro-seq. Predicted success to first- and second-line regimens recommended by the Colombian HIV treatment guidelines was estimated. RESULTS: One hundred and three naïve and 77 experienced patients were included. For naïve patients, resistance mutations wer

Death and injury from motor vehicle crashes in Colombia.

We report data on the distribution and determinants of road deaths and injuries for all victims in Colombia, with the aim of defining targets and priorities for highway death prevention in that country and other rapidly urbanizing nations. Using information from Colombia's Fund for the Prevention of Road Injury and the national death registry, we studied data on deaths and injuries from 1991 to 1995 for the nation as a whole and for the country's two largest cities, Santa Fe de Bogotá and Medellín. Deaths and injuries are rising in the nation as a whole. Of the deaths, 75% occur in urban areas

Comparative studies of Trypanosoma (Duttonella) vivax isolates from Colombia.

The characterization of four Trypanosoma vivax isolates from Colombia in South America showed that although minor phenotypic differences existed between them, these parasites are antigenically related and belong to a single serodeme. Characterization by isoenzyme assay, karyotyping and DNA probe analysis, showed the Colombian isolates to be more similar to the West African than to Kenyan T. vivax. There was, however, little serological cross-reactivity between South American and African groups of T. vivax. Although the T. vivax isolates from Colombia were pathogenic for dairy calves which show

Intraocular filaria, a Loaina species, from man in Colombia.

A 4.5-mm filarial worm was removed from the anterior chamber of the left eye of a 56-year-old man who had lost the sight in the right eye due to trauma some years earlier. The worm was removed intact through an upper scleral incision with a corneal based flap. Within 2 months vision was normal. The worm was identified as a sexually mature male of an undescribed species of Loaina Eberhard and Orihel 1984, a genus related to Loa and Dirofilaria.

Juvenile Behçet's disease 2014-2024: multicenter study in Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile Behçet's disease (JBD) is a rare multisystem inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the oral and genital mucosa, as well as vessels of any caliber. Between 4% and 26% of Behçet's disease cases begin before the age of 16. JBD remains underreported, with only 55 cases documented in Colombia in 2022. Its aetiology is uncertain, with possible infectious and genetic triggers. The wide range of clinical variability often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment, increasing the risk of serious complications such as thrombosis and neurological damage. MATERIALS AND METHOD

Reemergence of Yellow Fever, Magdalena Valley, Colombia, 2024-2025.

Yellow fever, a zoonotic arboviral disease, has reemerged in Colombia, triggering a major outbreak in the country. During 2024 through mid-2025, a total of 132 human cases and 68 infections in nonhuman primates were confirmed, primarily in the department of Tolima, historically considered a low-risk area. We analyzed the historical and current epidemiology of yellow fever in Colombia, highlighting ecologic, social, and surveillance factors that contributed to the outbreak. Low vaccination coverage, insufficient epizootic and entomological surveillance, deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and

A new species of Rhadinoloricaria (Siluriformes: Loricariinae) from Colombia.

During 2009, photos of three specimens in poor conditions from the Caquetá River system in Colombia generated suspicions about the existence of a new species of Rhadinoloricaria. In 2022, additional specimens were obtained from the same aquatic system allowing confirm the new species presence. The new species has a projected, spatula-shaped snout, and a pattern of buccal ornamentation similar to that observed in R. macromystax (Günther 1869) and R. stewarti Provenzano & Barriga 2020. The new species is distinguished from similar Rhadinoloricaria by the pattern of plates covering the abdomen an

Tough Tradeoffs: Coca crops and agrarian alternatives in Colombia.

This paper compares coca with mainstream agrarian economies in Colombia. It shows that the country's legal and illicit sectors share several fundamental characteristics and processes. Due to its very illegality, coca is endowed with positive characteristics that are not easily found elsewhere: it is a productive - even in the absence of basic public goods -, familial, labor intensive, smallholder agriculture, relatively resistant to monoculture. Furthermore, different processes of social change have mitigated some of the typical problems of agrarian frontiers linked to global markets. In turn,
