The results of a survey of pretrial examination cases admitted to the provincial psychiatric hospital in Saskatchewan from 1966 to 1975 are reported. The demographic and psychiatric data and data from the psychiatric reports to the Court are analyzed. Some deficiencies noted in the reports to the Court are discussed and some remedial measures are suggested.

The authors sent out questionnaires regarding knowledge of statutes governing emergency involuntary hospitalization to psychiatrists in Connecticut and in the District of Columbia. The involuntary hospitalisation of psychiatric patients continues to be a controversial issue. All patients certified and admitted to Sterkfontein Hospital under Sections 9 and 12 of the Mental Health Act, No. 18 of 1973, over a 4-week period were surveyed. Prisoners, on remand or convicted, can be placed for a variable amount of time in a unit for difficult patients if their pathological mental state so requires. For the most part, their therapeutic care does not depend on their status as prisoner. The treatments provided are those indicated for their psychological pathologies and their potential or known dangerousness. However, some administrative measures make a distinction between their treatment and that of non-prisoner patients placed in these secure psychiatric units.
