Common variable immunodeficiency in association with Turner's syndrome.

Common variable immunodeficiency is a heterogeneous syndrome which may occur at any age and may be associated with recurrent sinopulmonary and gastro-intestinal infections, atopic illness, autoimmune disorders and varying degrees of hypogammaglobulinaemia (1). The clinical syndrome is very similar to that described in X-linked agamma-globulinaemia but the mode of inheritance is unknown (2). In this communication, a patient with Turner's syndrome with X-isoX chromosomal pattern in conjunction with common variable immunodeficiency is reported.

Reversible common variable immunodeficiency syndrome induced by phenytoin.

Phenytoin-induced panhypogammaglobulinemia mimicking the common variable immunodeficiency syndrome is rare. We describe a patient who, while being treated with phenytoin and corticosteroids, developed panhypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent pneumonia, eosinophilia, and a transient rash. Immunoglobulin levels, which had been normal prior to phenytoin therapy, returned to normal over a period of several months after the drug therapy was stopped. Levels of IgG subclasses and numbers of B cells, T cells, and T-cell subsets were determined during the recovery period. In a review of the reported cases,

Toxoplasmosis in a patient with common variable immunodeficiency.

We describe here a case of common variable immunodeficiency with depression of both humoral and cellular immunity, manifested primarily by chronic toxoplasmosis. The presence of a lymphoma as the underlying etiology of the immunodeficiency was excluded. The clinical, histological, and immunological interrelations between immunodeficiency, toxoplasmosis and lymphoma are discussed.

[Common variable immunodeficiency: an immunological study (author's transl)].

A 17-year-old school boy with recurrent sinopulmonary infection and diarrhea was found to have marked hypogammaglobulinemia. He had no family history of similar disorder. Serum IgG was measured 240 mg/dl, whereas all the other classes of immunoglobulins were undetectable with Mancini's technique. The polymorphonuclear leukocyte function and complement system were normal. Although the numbers of T and B lymphocytes were normal, we demonstrated that the patient's B cells were able to produce only IgG in subnormal amount and unable to secrete other classes of immunoglobulins. No hyperactive suppr

Monogenic Primary Immunodeficiency Disorder Associated with Common Variable Immunodeficiency and Autoimmunity.

BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most frequent primary immunodeficiency disorder mainly characterized by recurrent bacterial infections besides other immunological defects including loss of or dysfunction of B cells and decreased immunoglobulin levels. In this study, our aim is to evaluate clinical, immunological, and molecular data of patients with a primary clinical diagnosis of CVID and autoimmune phenotype with a confirmed genetic diagnosis. METHODS: Among 297 patients with CVID, who were registered in the Iranian Primary Immunodeficiency Registry at Children's M

Respiratory disease in common variable immunodeficiency and other primary immunodeficiency disorders.

Respiratory disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality amongst patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders. Computed tomography (CT) plays an important role in the multidisciplinary approach to these conditions, in detecting, characterizing, and quantifying the extent of lung damage and in directing treatment. The aim of this review is to classify the primary immunodeficiency disorders and describe the thoracic complications and the associated CT findings whilst discussing the role of radiology in diagnosis and surveillance.

Genetics in a Danish Common Variable Immunodeficiency Cohort.

PURPOSE: Genetics of Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is complex and not fully elucidated. This study presents the clinical and genetic findings of a Danish CVID cohort and investigate whether initial genetic findings can be re-classified upon re-evaluation years later in time. METHODS: From 2016 to 2021, individuals with CVID or a CVID-like-phenotype were examined using whole exome or whole genome sequencing in combination with comprehensive gene-panels. The results were re-evaluated to ensure up-to-date American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) classification after a me

Genetics and clinical phenotypes in common variable immunodeficiency.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is one of the most common symptomatic groups of inborn errors of immunity. In addition to infections resulting from insufficient levels of immune globulins and antibodies, many patients develop inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, which are associated with increased mortality. This aspect of CVID has been the focus of many studies, and dissecting the clinical phenotypes of CVID, has had the goal of providing biomarkers to identify these subjects, potentially at the time of diagnosis. With the application of whole exome (WES) and whole genome analyses,

Common variable immunodeficiency disorders: What generalists should know.

Primary immune deficiency disorders (PIDDs) are common and underdiagnosed. Predominant antibody deficiencies (PADs) are the most common type of immune deficiency and comprise 55% of the immune deficiencies diagnosed.[1] Although immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency remains the most common type of PID, common variable immunodeficiency disorders remain the most common symptomatic PID for which medical therapy is sought.

Neuroborreliosis in a horse with common variable immunodeficiency.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a rare condition in adult horses characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and increased susceptibility to parasitic and bacterial infections, including recurrent respiratory diseases, septicemia, and meningitis. Lyme disease is often included as a differential diagnosis in CVID horses with signs of meningitis; however, the Borrelia burgdorferi organism has not been demonstrated previously within central nervous system tissues of CVID horses with neurologic disease, to our knowledge. We report herein a case of neuroborreliosis in a CVID horse, confirmed

Autoimmunity and infection in common variable immunodeficiency (CVID).

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous group of diseases, characterized by primary hypogammaglobulinemia. B and T cell abnormalities have been described in CVID. Typical clinical features of CVID are recurrent airway infections; lymphoproliferative, autoinflammatory, or neoplastic disorders; and autoimmune diseases among which autoimmune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is the most common. The coexistence of immunodeficiency and autoimmunity appears paradoxical, since one represents a hypoimmune state and the other a hyperimmune state. Considering both innate and adaptive immune resp

[Malignancies in adult patients with common variable immunodeficiency].

BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) implies an increased risk of cancer, with an estimated incidence of 11-13%, particularly during the 5th and 6th decade of life. B cell-Hodgkin lymphomas are the more frequent cancer, followed by non-Hodgkin lymphoma and epithelial tumors (gastric, breast, bladder and cervix). OBJECTIVE: To describe the types of cancers in a cohort of adult patients with CVID. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study was made in which we reviewed the charts of patients with CVID attending the Primary Immunodeficiencies Cli

Altered serum cytokine signature in common variable immunodeficiency.

PURPOSE: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most frequent form of primary symptomatic hypogammaglobulinemia. CVID patients display a number of abnormalities in lymphocyte subpopulations including chronic T-cell activation and decreased numbers of circulating CD4(+) T cells and NK cells. We and others have recently shown that CVID is associated with increased concentration of soluble CD14 (sCD14) and other factors indicating limited microbial translocation. METHODS: To address the mechanisms of chronic immune activation in CVID, we performed a detailed analysis of cytokine serum le
