Characteristics of young adults with schizophrenic disorders treated in the community.

The authors describe the characteristics of 100 young adults with schizophrenia or schizophrenia-related disorders who are being treated in the community, patients who are at high risk for serious, long-term impairment but have not necessarily developed such impairment yet. In contrast to subjects in some other studies of young adult chronic patients, the patients show great variability in previous levels of functioning, such as employment history, ability to live independently, and drug use. The authors hypothesize that highly individualized assessment and comprehensive treatment provided ear

Community-level perceptions of housing services for people with opioid use disorder: a qualitative analysis of community stakeholders in the HEALing communities study.

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity, or the inability to afford or maintain residence in a safe and quality place, is a barrier to accessing and staying in substance use treatment and/or recovery support services. There is a gap in knowledge in how housing insecurity influences substance use disorder (SUD) prevalence, and the role housing security plays in SUD treatment initiation and retention. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) is a large multisite trial aiming to reduce overdose risk through the implementation of evidence-based interventions delivered by community coalitions to reduce overdose

A preliminary epidemiologic study of social (pragmatic) communication disorder in the context of developmental language disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is extremely limited population-based research on social (pragmatic) communication disorder (SCD). Population-based samples have the potential to better characterize the SCD phenotype by mitigating confounds and biases that are typical of convenience and clinical samples. AIMS: The aims of this preliminary epidemiologic study were to advance our understanding of the SCD phenotype relative to developmental language disorder (DLD), obtain an estimate of prevalence, identify risk factors and lay the groundwork for future population level research of SCD. METHODS & PROCEDURES:

Autism, Language Disorder, and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder: DSM-V and Differential Diagnoses.

• Based on strong research evidence (1), the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has increased over the past decade, with a 2010 prevalence of 1:68 (1.5%) in children age 8 years. • Based on some research evidence as well as consensus (3), the most recent revision of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) identifies two core dimensions for the diagnosis of ASD: social (social communication and social interaction) and nonsocial (restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities). • Based on some research evidence as well

Adaptation of Diagnosis from Autism Spectrum Disorder to Social Communication Disorder in Adolescents with ADHD.

Here, we describe a case in which an original diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Asperger's syndrome was later adapted to social communication disorder, to meet the new guidelines. First, separate diagnostic labels of autism disorder, Asperger's disorder, and PDD-NOS have been replaced by one umbrella term "autism spectrum disorder". Second, the new DSM-5 criteria are more stringent than the old criteria. For example, observation of a higher number of symptoms is necessary to meet the criteria, such as restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Third, the comm

Eating disorders in a community-based sample of women with alcohol use disorder and nicotine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Studies consistently report a higher prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) among women with eating disorders than control women. However, limited research exists on the prevalence of eating disorder symptoms and diagnoses in women with SUDs, especially in community-based populations. We examined the prevalence of eating disorder symptoms and diagnosis by the presence or absence of lifetime alcohol use disorder (AUD) and/or nicotine dependence (ND) in a community-based sample of women. METHODS: 3756 women (median age = 22 years) from the Missouri Adolescent Female Twin Study

Effects of Short Video App Guided Mindfulness Meditation on Policemen's Communication Anxiety, PTSD, Anger Management, and Mood Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Law enforcement is a high-stress profession, with officers frequently exposed to traumatic events, leading to mental health challenges such as communication anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anger management difficulties, and mood disorders. Mindfulness meditation (MM), particularly when guided through short video applications, has shown promise in addressing these issues by enhancing emotional regulation and resilience. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the effects of an 8-week MM intervention, delivered via short video apps, on communication anxiety, PTSD, anger manag

A Hybrid BCI Integrating EEG and Eye-Tracking for Assisting Clinical Communication in Patients With Disorders of Consciousness.

Assessing communication abilities in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) is challenging due to limitations in the behavioral scale. Electroencephalogram-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and eye-tracking for detecting ocular changes can capture mental activities without requiring physical behaviors and thus may be a solution. This study proposes a hybrid BCI that integrates EEG and eye tracking to facilitate communication in patients with DOC. Specifically, the BCI presented a question and two randomly flashing answers (yes/no). The subjects were instructed to focus on an answ

INCOG 2.0 Guidelines for Cognitive Rehabilitation Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Part IV: Cognitive-Communication and Social Cognition Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Moderate to severe traumatic brain injury causes significant cognitive impairments, including impairments in social cognition, the ability to recognize others' emotions, and infer others' thoughts. These cognitive impairments can have profound negative effects on communication functions, resulting in a cognitive-communication disorder. Cognitive-communication disorders can significantly limit a person's ability to socialize, work, and study, and thus are critical targets for intervention. This article presents the updated INCOG 2.0 recommendations for management of cognitive-comm

Molecules, Mechanisms, and Disorders of Self-Domestication: Keys for Understanding Emotional and Social Communication from an Evolutionary Perspective.

The neural crest hypothesis states that the phenotypic features of the domestication syndrome are due to a reduced number or disruption of neural crest cells (NCCs) migration, as these cells differentiate at their final destinations and proliferate into different tissues whose activity is reduced by domestication. Comparing the phenotypic characteristics of modern and prehistoric man, it is clear that during their recent evolutionary past, humans also went through a process of self-domestication with a simultaneous prolongation of the period of socialization. This has led to the development of

Teaching multi-step requesting and social communication to two children with autism spectrum disorders with three AAC options.

The present study involved comparing the acquisition of multi-step requesting and social communication across three AAC options: manual signing (MS), picture exchange (PE), and speech-generating devices (SGDs). Preference for each option was also assessed. The participants were two children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who had previously been taught to use each option to request preferred items. Intervention was implemented in an alternating-treatments design. During baseline, participants demonstrated low levels of correct communicative responding. With intervention, both participants

Positive effects of methylphenidate on social communication and self-regulation in children with pervasive developmental disorders and hyperactivity.

This report examined the effect of methylphenidate on social communication and self-regulation in children with pervasive developmental disorders and hyperactivity in a secondary analysis of RUPP Autism Network data. Participants were 33 children (29 boys) between the ages of 5 and 13 years who participated in a four-week crossover trial of placebo and increasing doses of methylphenidate given in random order each for one week. Observational measures of certain aspects of children's social communication, self-regulation, and affective behavior were obtained each week. A significant positive ef

Clinical characteristics of children referred to a child development center for evaluation of speech, language, and communication disorders.

Speech, language, and communication disorders are prominent reasons for referrals to a child development center. From 1984 to 1988, 1,090 preschool children were referred to our child development center, which serves the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Of all referrals, 432 (41%) were primarily due to speech, language, and communication problems. After exclusion of those with IQ < 50 and those with non-language-related disabilities, 323 children remained. The children were classified into different subtypes of developmental language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders. The main developmental

When Risk Is Framed as Certainty: Ethical Concerns in Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Polygenic Disorders (PGT-P) Communication.

Preimplantation genetic testing for polygenic disorders (PGT-P) emerged as a novel application of reproductive genetics. Using polygenic risk scores (PRS), proponents of PGT-P claim to predict a future child's genetic predisposition to multifactorial diseases. However, when probability is marketed as prediction, the ethical foundations of informed decision-making begin to erode. PGT-P relies on PRS to provide probabilistic information, and commercial providers frequently present these risk estimates as predictive, downplaying key limitations. This paper examines how promotional language surrou

Toward a Diagnostic Template for Acquired Apraxia of Speech: Insights From an Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders Review.

PURPOSE: Significant variation is observed in diagnostic assessments for individuals with acquired apraxia of speech (AOS). The lack of consistency across research related to AOS impacts the comparison of intervention outcomes. This extends to diagnostic criteria, assessment, and the inclusion of patient demographics. This viewpoint examines outcomes related to the consistency in diagnostic tool use and collection of demographic information and introduces a template to support researchers and clinicians conducting diagnostic evaluations. Materials include guidelines for a thorough case history

Evidence- and Consensus-Based Guidelines for the Management of Communication and Swallowing Disorders Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence-based management guidelines for communication and swallowing disorders following pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) are scarcely available, potentially resulting in suboptimal outcomes. To improve clinical care of this population, a multidisciplinary guideline development committee was formed to develop evidence-based recommendation (EBR) and consensus-based recommendation (CBR) for the management of speech, language, and swallowing disorders during the first year of recovery. METHODS: A 3-round Delphi survey was completed by the committee to reach agreement (80% conse

Five heads are better than one: preliminary results of team-based learning in a communication disorders graduate course.

BACKGROUND: Clinical problem-solving is fundamental to the role of the speech-language pathologist in both the diagnostic and treatment processes. The problem-solving often involves collaboration with clients and their families, supervisors, and other professionals. Considering the importance of cooperative problem-solving in the profession, graduate education in speech-language pathology should provide experiences to foster the development of these skills. One evidence-based pedagogical approach that directly targets these abilities is team-based learning (TBL). TBL is a small-group instructi

Brief report: IQ split predicts social symptoms and communication abilities in high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders.

We investigated the relationship of discrepancies between VIQ and NVIQ (IQ split) to autism symptoms and adaptive behavior in a sample of high-functioning (mean FSIQ = 98.5) school-age children with autism spectrum disorders divided into three groups: discrepantly high VIQ (n = 18); discrepantly high NVIQ (n = 24); and equivalent VIQ and NVIQ (n = 36). Discrepantly high VIQ and NVIQ were associated with autism social symptoms but not communication symptoms or repetitive behaviors. Higher VIQ and NVIQ were associated with better adaptive communication but not socialization or Daily Living Skill

The human right to communicate and our need to listen: Learning from people with a history of childhood communication disorder.

PURPOSE: In 2013, the Australian Government Senate formed a committee for inquiry and report into the prevalence of speech, language, and communication disorders and speech pathology services in Australia. Submissions were sought from individuals and organisations. In this paper, submissions made by individuals with a history of childhood communication disorder were examined to explore their life experiences and the impact on their lives when the right to communicate could not be enacted. METHOD: There were 305 submissions to the Australian Government Senate Committee Inquiry, of which 288 we
