Access to syringes at pharmacies (ASAP): Preliminary impact of a pharmacy-level intervention.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are important access points for services to reduce bloodborne illnesses (BBIs) like HIV and Hepatitis C. However multiple barriers limit pharmacy provision of these services, including stigma toward people who use drugs (PWUD) and staff discomfort with harm reduction practices. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated a pharmacy-level intervention called Access to Syringes at Pharmacies (ASAP) designed to increase nonprescription syringe sales and reduce stigma. METHODS: A one-armed pilot study was conducted with 18 staff of 3 community pharmacies located in 3 differe

'Catching chlamydia': combining cash incentives and community pharmacy access for increased chlamydia screening, the view of young people.

In Australia and elsewhere, chlamydia screening rates for those aged between 16 and 30 years continue to be low. Innovative, age-appropriate approaches are necessary to increase chlamydia screening among this target group to prevent short- and long-term consequences of the infection such as pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Studies have demonstrated that offering chlamydia screening in community pharmacies may be a useful adjunct to current screening services. Approximately 90% of Australians visit a pharmacy at least once a year. Chlamydia sc

Historically Black Colleges and Universities as anchor institutions for the rural pharmacy workforce.

BACKGROUND: Rural U.S. communities face persistent pharmacist shortages and pharmacy closures that restrict access to medications, chronic disease management, and other essential care. Pharmacy workforce scholarship has paid little attention to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), although they educate a disproportionate share of Black pharmacists, several are located in or near the rural South, and their missions emphasize service to underserved communities. Rural workforce research rarely examines race, and HBCU health professions research rarely examines rural practice, lea

Missed Opportunities in Engaging Community Pharmacies for Integrated Tuberculosis Care in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Call to Action.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Community pharmacies, which are often the first point of contact for people with TB, are underutilized in expanding TB care. Engaging community pharmacies in TB care could facilitate personalized adherence counseling, the timely detection and reporting of medication side effects, and the integration of TB and HIV services for individuals with both TB and HIV. Pharmacies can reduce stigma and address social and psychological barriers by offering person-centered care in convenient, accessible settings, in

Pharmaceutical care issues in lung cancer: can community pharmacists support patients receiving systemic anticancer therapy?

OBJECTIVES: Most patients receive systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) as day cases and toxicities, if they occur, are likely to appear first in primary care. Pharmaceutical care can be delivered by community pharmacists, but little is known about the epidemiology of SACT toxicities in the community and potential interventions to address these which raise the following questions: what are the typologies of SACT-associated toxicities experienced by community-based patients and what are the associated pharmaceutical care issues (PCIs)? The aim of this study was to identify toxicities and pharmaceu

[Community pharmacist vaccination in Spain: an opportunity to improve vaccination coverage based on European evidence].
