Training Community Health Workers to Support Families of Children With Disabilities: Lessons Learned and Practical Recommendations.

Community health workers provide important services to support public health outcomes, particularly in low-income and low-resource settings. This practice note describes the training and supervision of community health workers for a program that aims to provide community-based support to families of children with disabilities in Lusaka, Zambia. Faculty from the United States partnered with a local organization to develop a multiday experiential training for supervisors, who then provided this training to volunteers in the community. An evaluation of supervisors and community health workers rev

Fostering Community Support for Breastfeeding: Implementation of a Neighborhood Level Breastfeeding Initiative in Brooklyn, New York.

To share lessons learned from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Brooklyn Breastfeeding Empowerment Zone initiative to increase breastfeeding duration rates in the Brooklyn Community Districts (CDs) of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville, and to evaluate the degree to which the initiative mobilized community support, and impacted breastfeeding. These neighborhoods were chosen due to historically low breastfeeding rates. Highly frequented community establishments such as restaurants/cafés, beauty salons, pharmacies and retail shops were selected as potential breastfeedin

Creating Family-Centred Support for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Africa: Examples of Local Community Interventions.

Preschoolers with disabilities and their family caregivers are overlooked by many public health initiatives, especially in low-income countries. Yet they can benefit from early intervention to promote their development soon after birth and to provide a better quality of life for their families. In this paper, we describe how a community-based approach has been implemented with minimal funding in two areas in Zimbabwe: a township in Harare and in rural areas of Manicaland Province. Our aim in sharing this information-allied with references to research studies recently undertaken in Africa-is th

Short report: Evaluation of wider community support for a neurodiversity teaching programme designed using participatory methods.

Children with diagnoses such as autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and so on often experience bullying at school. This group can be described as neurodivergent, meaning they think and process information differently from most people. Previous research suggests that increasing people's knowledge can be an effective way to reduce stigma and bullying. Therefore, we decided to create a primary school resource to teach about neurodiversity - the concept that all humans vary in how our brains work. Working with educators, our research team - which included neurodiverge

Cryopreservation of Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus Sperm to Support Community-Based Repository Development for Preservation of Genetic Resources.

Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus is an emerging model organism in which cutting-edge genomic tools and resources are being developed for use in a growing number of research fields. One limitation of this model system is the lack of long-term storage for genetic resources. The goal of this study was to establish a generalizable cryopreservation approach for Hydractinia that would support future repository development for other cnidarian species. Specific objectives were to: (1) characterize basic parameters related to sperm quality; (2) develop a generalizable approach for sperm collection; (3) as

Assessment of Social Support and Quitting Smoking in an Online Community Forum: Study Involving Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: A key factor in successfully reducing and quitting smoking, as well as preventing smoking relapse is access to and engagement with social support. Recent technological advances have made it possible for smokers to access social support via online community forums. While community forums associated with smoking cessation interventions are now common practice, there is a gap in understanding how and when the different types of social support identified by Cutrona and Suhr (1992) (emotional, esteem, informational, tangible, and network) are exchanged on such forums. Community forums t

A Pragmatic Cluster-Randomized Trial of Provider Education and Community Health Worker Support for Tobacco Cessation.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with serious mental illness have a high prevalence of tobacco use disorder and related early mortality but underutilize smoking cessation medication. The authors determined whether clinician-delivered education to primary care providers regarding safety, efficacy, and importance of cessation medication (provider education [PE]) alone or combined with community health worker (CHW) support would increase tobacco abstinence in this population, compared with usual care. METHODS: All adult current tobacco smokers receiving psychiatric rehabilitation for serious mental illnes

Should community health workers offer support healthcare services to survivors of sexual violence? a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is widespread, yet relatively few survivors receive healthcare or complete treatment. In low and middle-income countries, community health workers (CHWs) have the potential to provide support services to large numbers of survivors. The aim of this review was to document the role of CHWs in sexual violence services. We aimed to: 1) describe existing models of CHWs services including characteristics of CHWs, services delivered and populations served; 2) explore acceptability of CHWs' services to survivors and feasibility of delivering such services; and 3) document th

Community care for adults with Williams syndrome: how families cope and the availability of support networks.

A study of the adjustment difficulties and needs of 70 adults with Williams syndrome found that the majority continued to live at home and remained heavily dependent on their families for their self-care. Twenty-nine families (41.4%) had had no contact with a social worker in the preceding 2 years, and 34 out of the 48 families whose children still lived at home (70.8%) had no access to respite care. Advice regarding benefits, and appropriate living and occupational arrangements for the adults was also patchy. Despite progressive medical problems, and high rates of behavioural and emotional di

From Counseling to Capacity: Patient-Care-Team Perspectives on Healthy Eating Support in Underserved Community Clinics.

INTRODUCTION: Healthy eating supports diabetes management and may reduce colorectal cancer risk, yet patients in underserved clinic settings often face structural barriers that limit dietary behavior change. This study examined patient-care-team and health-system factors influencing diet counseling, nutrition referral, and food-resource linkage in two community clinics. METHODS: Before launching a patient-facing colorectal cancer and colon-healthy nutrition education intervention, we conducted an exploratory study to inform the intervention design with 23 patient-care-team members from two co

Social support and associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in Singapore - a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The global population is rapidly ageing, creating unprecedented healthcare challenges. Social support, encompassing emotional and instrumental aspects, is crucial for healthy ageing and serves as a protective factor against adverse health outcomes. Research reveals significant variation in social support levels across populations. Limited research exists on social support in multi-ethnic Asian contexts like Singapore, particularly regarding relationships between social support, frailty, and community resource utilisation among older adults. METHODS: The descriptive cross-sectional

The influence of support from family, friends, and community on perceived mental health status in diabetes.

Strong social support is a protective factor in diabetes and mental health management. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the type of support on perceived mental health status among people with diabetes. We used data from the 2021 Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Survey (MEPS). Regression models assessed the association between mental well-being (outcome) and expected help from family, friends, and the community (exposure). Support from both friends and family were significantly associated with better mental well-being, adjusting for covariates. Secondary a

HIV/AIDS in the state of Amazonas, Brazilian Amazon: decentralization, third-party support and community action.

Amazonas is Brazil's largest state and a paradigmatic tropical medicine setting: vast territories connected mainly by rivers, high cultural and linguistic diversity, and multiple co-endemic infections. The state comprises 62 municipalities and roughly 4.3 million inhabitants, with approximately half of its inhabitants residing in Manaus, the capital, where specialized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV ) services have historically been concentrated. However, the HIV/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has shown sustained interiorization beyond the capital and a high AIDS mortali

Scalable Community-Based Exercise to Support Physical Activity in Cancer Care: A Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Study.

Background/Objectives: Despite recommendations to exercise, many individuals living with and beyond cancer do not achieve or sustain recommended physical activity levels because access to structured exercise support remains limited. We evaluated the real-world delivery of a scalable, community-based exercise model designed to address this gap. Methods: We conducted a hybrid effectiveness-implementation study of a 12-week supervised exercise intervention delivered in community settings across Alberta, Canada (in person or virtual). The primary outcome was the proportion of participants meeting

Engaging stakeholders in the north-west first 1000 days project: building a strong community support ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: The first 1000 days (F1D) (from conception to 2 years of age) is a pivotal period for maternal and child health. Engaging stakeholders at key stages of research and policy development can bridge the gap between scientific evidence, policymaking, and community needs, and contribute to the generation of culturally sensitive and evidence-based strategies to enhance maternal and child health. This research presents a mixed-methods analysis of stakeholder consultation associated with the North-West First 1000 Days (NW F1D) project. OBJECTIVE: To gain deeper insights into the perspective

PROTOCOL: Group-based community interventions to support the social reintegration of marginalised adults with mental illness.

This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The main objective is to explore the general efficacy of group-based community interventions aimed at supporting marginalised adults with mental illness and related problems on outcomes such as problem behaviour, subjective well-being, homelessness, poverty and employment. Furthermore, the objective is to explore the potential advantages/disadvantages of using a group-based versus an individual intervention when targeting specific problems or when using specific types of interventions.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Online Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Support Community Members: Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have faced unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research from the first two months of the pandemic suggests that a small proportion of people with OCD experienced worsening in their OCD symptoms since the pandemic began, whereas the rest experienced either no change or an improvement in their symptoms. However, as society-level factors relating to the pandemic have evolved, the effects of the pandemic on people with OCD have likely changed as well, in complex and population-specific ways. Therefore, this study contributes t

Water flushing irremovable biofilms on support material in dynamic membrane bioreactor: Formation, composition, and microbial community.

Dynamic membrane bioreactors mainly rely on the in-situ formed biofilms on support materials to reject fine particles in water. The development of irremovable biofilms on support materials can decrease the cleaning efficiency when removing the unwanted biofilms with low permeability by water flushing. In the present study, the initial formed biofilms on support materials at 5-day solids retention time (SRT) were removable by water flushing. After repeated cleaning with off-line water flushing during operation, however, irremovable biofilms were developed gradually inside the mesh pores and thu
