Breaking Barriers: Essential Reforms for a Competitive and Affordable Biosimilars Market.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This update examines the current policy landscape for biosimilars, particularly those approved for treating rheumatoid arthritis. We review recent literature and recommend policies to align the biosimilars market with the goals of the Biologic Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA). We examine updated evidence on biosimilar safety and effectiveness, recent FDA guidance on interchangeability, and challenges posed by anti-competitive behaviors and government regulations. Additionally, we analyze financial incentives and market dynamics affecting biosimilar adoption and c

Shifting attentional priorities: control of spatial attention through hemispheric competition.

Regions of frontal and posterior parietal cortex are known to control the allocation of spatial attention across the visual field. However, the neural mechanisms underlying attentional control in the intact human brain remain unclear, with some studies supporting a hemispatial theory emphasizing a dominant function of the right hemisphere and others supporting an interhemispheric competition theory. We previously found neural evidence to support the latter account, in which topographically organized frontoparietal areas each generate a spatial bias, or "attentional weight," toward the contrala

An Investigation into Helmet Use, Perceptions of Sports-Related Concussion, and Seeking Medical Care for Head Injury amongst Competitive Cyclists.

The purpose of this study was to investigate competitive cyclists' helmet use, perceptions of sports-related concussion (SRC), and medical-care-seeking behaviors. A mixed-method approach was used with qualitative and quantitative data presented. The study comprised of a cross-sectional analysis of 405 competitive cyclists who completed an online survey. Results indicated that most participants believed a bicycle helmet protects against SRC (79.5%) and considerable numbers of participants would not seek medical care for potential head injury in scenarios where this would be recommended. It was

Estrogens, brain and behavior: studies in fundamental neurobiology and observations related to women's health.

Mechanisms and consequences of the effects of estrogen on the brain have been studied both at the fundamental level and with therapeutic applications in mind. Estrogenic hormones binding in particular neurons in a limbic-hypothalamic system and their effects on the electrophysiology and molecular biology of medial hypothalamic neurons were central in establishing the first circuit for a mammalian behavior, the female-typical mating behavior, lordosis. Notably, the ability of estradiol to facilitate transcription from six genes whose products are important for lordosis behavior proved that horm

Effects of two self-control procedures on modifying Type A behavior.

Two groups of Type A subjects who received either anxiety management training focused on coping with anger and hostility or operant self-control procedures were compared with a control group. Treated subjects compared to controls showed significant reductions in the overall Type A behavior, hard-driving/competitive, and speed/impatience scores. The results supported the hypothesis that both self-control training methods provide the opportunity to adapt more effective coping strategies and to rely less on Type A coping techniques. Self-control procedures such as anxiety management training and

Ejaculate testosterone levels affect maternal investment in red junglefowl (Gallus gallus gallus).

Substantial concentrations of testosterone are not only present in a male's circulation, but also in its ejaculate. Surprisingly, the regulation of ejaculate T and its effects on females and their offspring, potentially a cryptic paternal trait, are not known. We found lower circulating and higher ejaculate T concentrations in subordinate red junglefowl (Gallus gallus gallus) males compared to dominant males, suggestive of an adaptive trade-off in T allocation to circulation and their ejaculate. Subsequently, we artificially inseminated females with either testosterone enriched (TE) or control

The mere presence of opposite-sex others on judgments of sexual and romantic desirability: opposite effects for men and women.

Men's and women's mate preferences impose on each a unique set of adaptive problems that must be solved when judging the desirability of prospective mates. One potentially revealing source of information about an individual's desirability as a romantic partner is contained in the decisions made by same-sex others. The present studies predicted that men's and women's desirability assessments would be affected in opposite ways when target persons were depicted with members of the target's opposite sex. Study 1 (N = 847) documented that women rated men more desirable when shown surrounded by wome

Disentangling competitive adsorption dynamics: engineered Eucalyptus camaldulensis biochar for preferential retention of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in multimetallic systems.

The proliferation of heavy metal contamination necessitates sustainable, cost-effective remediation strategies capable of discriminating between toxic co-existing cations in complex matrices. This study presents the first systematic investigation employing phosphoric acid-modified Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaf biochar (EC-biochar) for the simultaneous and selective removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from competitive multicomponent systems a critical advancement beyond conventional single-metal studies. Characterization analyses confirmed a hierarchically porous architecture (SEM), semi-crystalline s

Screening inhibitory peptides against sphingomyelinase D from the livestock tick Rhipicephalus microplus using phage display technology.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus, which is distributed worldwide, causes significant economic loss to the livestock industry. A sphingomyelinase (SMase) D-like protein was previously identified in R. microplus saliva (RmSMase) and characterized in terms of its cofactors, optimum pH, and products generated from sphingomyelin hydrolysis. SMases are present in the venom of spiders from Loxosceles spp. and in the digestive system of non-venomous spiders from Uloborus spp. and are secreted by pathogenic bacteria. In this study A peptide library was screened using Phage Display technology and

Systematic characterization of AT1 receptor antagonists with label-free dynamic mass redistribution assays.

INTRODUCTION: In the drug discovery field, the binding affinities and binding kinetics of drug candidates are very important. Angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonists, e.g., candesartan, telmisartan, irbesartan, losartan and valsartan, show high affinities and long-lasting bindings to the receptor, making them preferred medications for hypertension treatment. However, the molecular binding properties of AT1 receptor antagonists are controversial. METHODS: In this work, we established a profile to study the phenotypic properties of AT1 receptor antagonists with label-free dynamic mass

Bridging single-species research and mixture reality: Emerging contaminants fate and transport in vadose zones.

Vadose zones serve as interfaces controlling contaminant transport from the land surface to underlying aquifers. While traditional research has largely focused on individual contaminant species, real-world contamination often involves complex mixtures containing dozens to thousands of chemical species. This disconnect creates considerable challenges for predicting contaminant behavior, assessing environmental risks, and developing effective remediation strategies. This review examines complex contaminant mixtures in vadose zones, with emphasis on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceut

Evolutionary diversification of bruchine beetles: climate-dependent traits and development associated with pest status.

A number of insect species infest human households and stored foods and products, leading to their designation as pests. Until recently, little was known about the factors driving the evolution of pests that feed on stored dry foods. Here, I review the effects of changes in climate and species interactions on the evolution and ecology of beetles that feed on dried seeds/grains. My review focuses on evidence that the host utilization by part of the species in the subfamily Bruchinae (Chrysomelidae) is a preadaptation for utilizing stored dry seeds and grains, thus leading to their status as a p

Interactions between Schistosoma intercalatum (Zaire strain) and S. mansoni.

Schistosoma mansoni and S. intercalatum, two schistosomes from different evolutionary lineages, are parasitic in humans and therefore able to co-infect the same host where they occur sympatrically in Africa. Previous studies of mating interactions between these species in mice, using the Lower Guinea strain of S. intercalatum, have demonstrated the competitive dominance of S. mansoni over S. intercalatum in terms of pairing ability, which is potentially an important mechanism restricting the distribution of S. intercalatum in Africa. The study presented here examines the mating interactions in

Epidemiology of injuries across multiple male professional football academies within Club Academy Scotland.

Injuries can negatively impact the development of academy footballers through time lost from training and matches. Reducing injury risk is therefore a priority. This study analysed 545 male players (U11-U18; age range 9-17) across five academies in Club Academy Scotland (CAS) during the 2024/2025 competitive season. Injury incidence (per 1000 hours), severity (mean and median days lost), and burden (days missed per 1000 hours) were recorded for both contact and non-contact injuries. Exposure included all training and match hours. Overall injury incidence, severity, and burden were substantiall

Analyzing the Relationship Between Aggression, Rule Violations, and Head Contact Events in Canadian Competitive Minor Bodychecking Hockey.

BACKGROUND: Hockey is an immensely popular sport in Canada, especially among youth participants. Despite evidence on the rates and risk of head injuries, especially in bodychecking contexts, little research has explored how and why injury occurs in gameplay through video observational methods. OBJECTIVE: To understand whether head contact (HC) events occur in youth bodychecking hockey as a result of play execution according to the rules, or result from violent and/or aggressive play. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive observational video analysis. METHODS: Verified head impact data from bodychecking

Decline in Efficiency and Changes in Technique Following a Simulated Cross-Country Skiing Race.

PURPOSE: To compare gross efficiency (GE) before versus after a simulated cross-country skate-skiing race and investigate the association between changes in GE and in kinematic variables. METHODS: GE and kinematic variables were measured during submaximal roller ski skating at a standardized speed-incline combination directly before and after a simulated race (∼39 min). GE was calculated from power output and respiratory data, while kinematic variables were obtained using 3D kinematics. The roller-ski-skating race simulation consisted of 3 virtual laps, with each lap (virtual distance: 3.4 km

Assessing Variations in Positional Performance across Age Groups and during Matches in Youth Association Football Competitions.

This study aimed to explore how positional performance varies across different youth age groups and during matches in football competitions. The study encompassed 160 male outfield youth football players (n = 80, under-13, U13; n = 80, under-15, U15) who belonged to the starting line-up and played the entire first half of each match. The players' positional data were gathered through the global positional system for each of the eight matches performed by each age group. The frequency of near-in-phase synchronization based on speed displacements, spatial exploration index, and the distance to t

Diving into a pool of data: Using principal component analysis to optimize performance prediction in women's short-course swimming.

This study aimed to optimise performance prediction in short-course swimming through Principal Component Analyses (PCA) and multiple regression. All women's freestyle races at the European Short-Course Swimming Championships were analysed. Established performance metrics were obtained including start, free-swimming, and turn performance metrics. PCA were conducted to reduce redundant variables, and a multiple linear regression was performed where the criterion was swimming time. A practical tool, the Potential Predictor, was developed from regression equations to facilitate performance predict
