Applicability of the Charm II system for monitoring antibiotic residues in manure-based composts.

The effluence of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) to aquatic and terrestrial environments is of concern due to the potential adverse effects on human health, such as the production of antibiotic resistant bacteria. One of the main pathways for antibiotics to enter the environment is via the application of manure and/or manure-based composts as an alternative organic fertilizer to agricultural lands. While a wide diversity of manure-based composts are produced in Korea, there is currently no regulatory guideline for VA residues. Hence, monitoring and limiting the concentration of VA residues in man

The adsorption and degradation of chlorpyriphos-methyl, pendimethalin and metalaxyl in solid urban waste compost.

To evaluate the feasibility of using compost to prepare substrates for the disposal of pesticide residues, adsorption and degradation studies were carried out on three widely used agricultural pesticides: chlorpyriphos-methyl, pendimethalin and metalaxyl. Obtained from solid urban waste, this compost has been shown to be able to adsorb high levels of chlorpyriphos-methyl and pendimethalin (85%, 100%) whereas metalaxyl was only adsorbed at a level of 37%. However, adding smectite to the compost increased the adsorption of metalaxyl by 117%. Chlorpyriphos-methyl and pendimethalin degraded quickl

Leaching composted lignocellulosic wastes to prepare container media: feasibility and environmental concerns.

The leaching of salt and mineral elements from three composts prepared with residual vegetable crop biomass (melon, pepper or zucchini) was studied using methacrylate columns and distilled water. The benefits of the leached composts to be used for ornamental potted plant production were also analysed. After leaching 5 container capacities of effluent, both the electrical conductivity and the concentration of soluble mineral elements in compost leachates decreased substantially and remained close to the target levels. Composts reacted differently to leaching due to differences in the raw waste

Evaluation of composts and liming materials in the phytostabilization of a mine soil using perennial ryegrass.

A microcosm experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) or garden waste compost (GWC), and liming materials in the rehabilitation of a soil affected by mining activities, and to study the use of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) for phystostabilization. The performance of the amendments was assessed by soil chemical parameters, total and bioavailable metals (Cu, Pb and Zn), soil enzymatic activities, and plant relative growth and mineral composition. In general, both composts corrected soil acidity and increased the total organic matter conte

Use of wastewater and compost extracts as nutrient sources for growing nursery and turfgrass species.

Nutrient salts present in liquid by-products following waste treatment are lost resources if not effectively recycled, and can cause environmental problems if improperly disposed. This research compared the growth response and mineral nutrient status of two nursery and two turfgrass species, hydroponically supplied with nutritive by-product extracts derived from anaerobically digested municipal solid waste (MSW) and aerobically composted organic wastes from the mushroom and MSW industries. Forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood') and weigela (Weigela florida 'Red Prince'), and creeping ben

Effect of chemical and microbial amendment on phosphorus runoff from composted poultry litter.

Environmental impacts of composting poultry litter with chemical amendments at the field scale have not been well quantified. The objectives of this study were to measure (i) P runoff and (ii) forage yield and N uptake from small plots fertilized with composted and fresh poultry litter. Two composting studies, aerated using mechanical turning, were conducted in consecutive years. Composted litter was collected at the completion of each study for use in runoff studies. Treatments in runoff studies included an unfertilized control, fresh (uncomposted) poultry litter, and litter composted with no

Metals in vineyard soils of the Penedès area (NE Spain) after compost application.

The application of organic wastes to improve soil physical characteristics in mechanized vineyards planted after land levelling is becoming a common practice in Mediterranean areas. It may be useful as an additional source of organic matter and nutrients, but these wastes could also have negative effects due to their metal content. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of compost application on soil metal contents in mechanized vineyard soils of the Spanish Mediterranean area, where this practice is repeated every three years. The study was carried out in a ten-year-old vineyard w

Cellulase production by Thermomonospora curvata isolated from municipal solid waste compost.

A cellulolytic, thermophilic actinomycete (previously isolated from municipal refuse compost samples) was identified as Thermomonospora curvata. A determination was made of the optimal conditions for cellulase production by T. curvata when grown at 55 C in a medium containing mineral salts, cellulose, and yeast extract. The pH and temperature optima (pH 6.0 and 65 C) for the cellulase produced by T. curvata were identical to those previously observed for the cellulase extracted from crude compost samples. Such similarities, together with the prevalence of T. curvata in compost samples and its

Red mud mitigates NH3 and greenhouse gas emissions during composting: functional gene and microbial community regulation.

The composting of agricultural wastes is accompanied by NH3 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Red mud, as a novel amendment, has been shown to accelerate humification of composting materials; however, its mechanisms of influencing NH3 and GHG emissions during composting remain unclear. This study investigated how the addition of 5% (w/w) red mud mitigated GHG and NH3 emissions during composting. The results showed that red mud addition effectively mitigated NH3 and GHG emissions during straw and horse manure co-composting, reducing NH3, CO2, and N2O emissions by 7.34%, 25.20%, and 28.90% com

Deciphering particle-scale microbial divergence with anaerobic enrichment during thermophilic succession: Implications for bioaugmentation in composting.

Composting, also referred to as aerobic fermentation, is a key method for recycling organic waste. The composting pile is characterized by substantial heterogeneity, which may influence microbial populations; however, the effects of this spatial heterogeneity on microbial communities have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, we compared the microbiomes of particle-associated and composite samples collected during the thermophilic phase-the most active period for organic matter degradation. Our findings reveal marked microbial divergence between particle-associated and composite s

Environmental assessment of municipal solid waste composting: comparing landfilling and incineration scenarios towards a sustainable approach.

Driven by the high content of organic materials in municipal solid waste (MSW) of 70% in Iran and the growing demand for mineral fertilizer, refinement of composting technology is imperative. In the pursuit of environmental sustainability, further investigation into the life cycle assessment of the composting process and end-of-life waste management must be conducted. Hence, this study scrutinizes the environmental burdens of the composting plant operation from cradle to gate. Because 50% of raw MSW was not converted to compost, its final disposal was evaluated based on incineration, landfill,

Modified carbon-based additive can achieve mitigation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions simultaneously in composting.

Malodorous gas emissions present a major constraint to the widespread adoption of composting technologies. In this study, a lab-scale simulated composting system was used to evaluate the effects of different carbonaceous additives on the emissions of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during tomato straw composting. Compared with the control, rice husk biochar, acid-modified rice husk biochar, and a lignin-based resin reduced NH3 emissions by 32.84%, 54.23%, and 42.89%, respectively. However, their effects on H2S emissions varied: acid-modified rice husk biochar and lignin-based resin re

Simultaneous reduction of odorous and greenhouse gases emissions by thermophilic microbial agents during chicken manure composting.

Odorous and greenhouse gases emissions from animal manure composting cause air pollution and nutrient loss. This research examined the effects of thermophilic fungal agent (F) and bacterial agent (B) on the emissions of odorous and greenhouse gases during chicken manure composting and explored the underlying mechanisms. The results indicated that the cumulative emission of ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in F treatment decreased by 20.1 %, 34.2 %, 8.3 % and 26.1 %, respectively, in comparison to 25.3 % reduction in H2S and 9.3 % reduction in N2O in

Mechanisms for enhanced lignin humification with reduced organic matter loss by goethite in biogas residue composting.

In this study, effects of three iron (oxyhydr)oxides on the biogas residue composting, i.e., composting with goethite (CFe1), hematite (CFe2) or magnetite (CFe3), were investigated. Results showed that composting performance of CFe1 was much better than those of CFe2 and CFe3. Addition of goethite increased temperature of CFe1 and enhanced lignin humification. More than 31.49% of Fe(III) in goethite was reduced to amorphous Fe(II) during the composting, suggesting that goethite worked as electron acceptor for microbial metabolism and heat generation. The functional bacteria Chloroflexi and Act

Effect of biochar addition on the dynamics of antibiotic resistant bacteria during the pig manure composting.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

In present study, the taxonomic variation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in pig manure (PM) composting with coconut shell biochar (CSB) and bamboo biochar (BB) addition was investigated. The experiment was divided into three treatments: T1 (as control or without biochar amendment), T2 was added 10% coconut shell biochar and T3 supplemented with 10% bamboo biochar. The initial feed stock were properly homogenized using a mechanical crusher. PM and wheat straw (WS) were mixed in a 5: 1 dry weight ratio to adjust the initial carbon/nitrogen ratio 25:1, bulk density to ~0.5 (kg/L) and ~60%

Ecotoxicity of arsenic contaminated sludge after mixing with soils and addition into composting and vermicomposting processes.

Sludge coming from remediation of groundwater contaminated by industry is usually managed as hazardous waste despite it might be considered for further processing as a source of nutrients. The ecotoxicity of phosphorus rich sludge contaminated with arsenic was evaluated after mixing with soil and cultivation with Sinapis alba, and supplementation into composting and vermicomposting processes. The Enchytraeus crypticus and Folsomia candida reproduction tests and the Lactuca sativa root growth test were used. Invertebrate bioassays reacted sensitively to arsenic presence in soil-sludge mixtures.

[Impacts of different aeration modes on nutrients conservation during swine manure composting with magnesium salt addition].

Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of two aeration modes on nutrients conservation in the thermophilic stage of swine manure composting with adding magnesium chloride. These results indicated that in the end of thermophilic stage of composting, the ammonia nitrogen losses of the piles with the intermittent aeration and with continuous aeration, were 23.56 g and 56.98 g, respectively, which means the loss of ammonia nitrogen of swine composting by the intermittent aeration was just 41.35% of that by the continuous aeration. Such loss of ammonia nitrogen resulted in 9.8% high

Progressive exploration of the four municipal solid composting phases for microplastics pollution: Extraction, abundance, and distribution.

Research on microplastic (MP) pollution in agriculture is limited, particularly concerning municipal solid waste (MSW) compost, which is commonly used to enhance soil quality but can introduce MPs into agricultural systems. This study evaluates the density separation efficiency of ZnCl₂ and CaCl₂ in both spiked and non-spiked compost. It also tracks MP abundance and size distribution throughout the composting stages-mesophilic, thermophilic, curing, and mature-at a Canadian facility. The research employs a combination of three extraction methods: wet-sieving, organic digestion, and density sep
