Chest compressions during ventilation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cause reversed airflow.

AIM: During cardiopulmonary resuscitation, once the patient is intubated, compressions and ventilations are performed simultaneously. Chest compressions during the inspiratory phase of ventilation may force air out of the lungs, causing so-called "reversed airflow", which may lead to ineffective ventilation. The purpose of this study is to determine the occurrence of this phenomenon and to quantify the volume of reversed airflow. METHODS: Observational study. During manual ventilation of intubated patients receiving chest compressions, the pressure gradient over the endotracheal tube was meas

Lung Injury in Asphyxiated Newborn Pigs Resuscitated from Cardiac Arrest - The Impact of Supplementary Oxygen, Longer Ventilation Intervals and Chest Compressions at Different Compression-to-Ventilation Ratios.

INTRODUCTION: Non-specific lung inflammatory events caused by severe asphyxia may be intensified by the way we resuscitate the newly born. Assessing lung injury is potentially important because if alternative resuscitation approaches induces similar inflammatory responses or less lung injury. then we may choose the resuscitation approach that is most gentle, and easiest to perform and learn. We investigated the levels of lung inflammatory markers by comparing different ventilation, chest compression and inhaled oxygen fraction strategies in resuscitation of newly born pigs at cardiac arrest.

Treatment of the inversion ankle sprain: comparison of different modes of compression and cryotherapy.

Relatively few studies have been performed to examine the effectiveness of different methods of treatment for the inversion ankle sprain. In this study, restoration of function following a grade II inversion sprain was compared among 34 subjects who received one of three methods of treatment, each of which incorporated an Air-Stirrup brace. The methods included uniform compression provided by elastic tape, focal compression provided by a U-shaped device, and focal compression with simultaneous cryotherapy. Although the results failed to demonstrate statistical significance at the .05 level (p

Novel two-dimensional "ring and chain" morphologies in Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of PS-b-PEO block copolymers: effect of spreading solution concentration on self-assembly at the air-water interface.

A polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) (MW = 141k, 11.4 wt% PEO) diblock copolymer in the hydrophobic regime was spread from chloroform solutions of various concentrations at the air-water interface, and the resultant monolayers were transferred to glass substrates and imaged using atomic force microscopy. Monolayers prepared under identical conditions were also characterized at the air-water interface via Langmuir compression isotherms. The effects of spreading solution concentration on surface features, compressibility, and limiting mean molecular area were determined, revealing sev

A new pneumatic lymphatic drainage device enhancing lymphatic flow in lower limbs with lymphedema: a single-center, single-arm, prospective, open-label, non-randomized, exploratory study.

Lymphedema is the swelling of tissues caused by lymphatic stasis. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), a treatment device for lymphedema, improves lymphatic flow using multiple donut-shaped air chambers with graduated compression from the distal. However, the lymphatic pathway has complicated three-dimensional networks; thus, a simple donut-shaped air chamber cannot adapt to the anatomy. A new pneumatic lymphatic drainage (PLD) device consisting of multiple round air chambers located according to the lymphatic pathways was collaboratively developed with a company. The device's air chamber

Exposure to BTEX in buses: The influence of vehicle fuel type.

Diesel-fueled buses have been replaced by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to minimize the high level of emissions in urban areas. However, differences in indoor exposure levels to Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) in those vehicles have not been investigated so far. The primary aim of this study was to determine if passengers are exposed to different BTEX levels when using buses powered by CNG or by diesel, and further explore if indoor levels are influenced by external air quality. For this purpose, BTEX air concentrations were measured in bus cabins (CNG and diesel), parking stat

Occupational exposure to gases, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds in biomass-fired power plants.

The combustion of fuels produces air pollutants in the form of gases, organic compounds, and particulate matter. However, although the environmental aspect of these agents has been examined, workers' exposure to them is still a neglected issue. The purpose of this study was to measure maintenance and ash removal workers' multiple exposures to gases, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during their work tasks in biomass-fired power plants. Our hygienic measurements revealed that carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, ammonia and sulfur dioxide were the most com

Design of a lightweight passive orthosis for tremor suppression.

BACKGROUND: Tremor is the most common movement disorder with the highest prevalence in the upper limbs. The mechanical suppression of involuntary movements is an alternative and additional treatment to medication or surgery. Here we present a new, soft, lightweight, task asjustable and passive orthosis for tremor suppression. METHODS: A new concept of a manual, textile-based, passive orthosis was designed with an integrated, task adjustable, air-filled structure, which can easily be inflated or deflated on-demand for a certain daily activity. The air-filled structure is placed on the dorsal s

Whole-body Vibration Exposure Intervention among Professional Bus and Truck Drivers: A Laboratory Evaluation of Seat-suspension Designs.

Long-term exposure to seated whole-body vibration (WBV) is one of the leading risk factors for the development of low back disorders. Professional bus and truck drivers are regularly exposed to continuous WBV, since they spend the majority of their working hours driving heavy vehicles. This study measured WBV exposures among professional bus and truck drivers and evaluated the effects of seat-suspension designs using simulated field-collected data on a vibration table. WBV exposures were measured and compared across three different seat designs: an air-ride bus seat, an air-ride truck seat, an

Lethal mechanisms in gastric volvulus.

A 55-year-old wheelchair-bound woman with severe cerebral palsy was found at autopsy to have marked distention of the stomach due to a volvulus. The stomach was viable, and filled with air and fluid and had pushed the left dome of the diaphragm upwards causing marked compression of the left lung with a mediastinal shift to the right (including the heart). There was no evidence of gastric perforation, ischaemic necrosis or peritonitis. Removal of the organ block revealed marked kyphoscoliosis. Histology confirmed the viability of the stomach and biochemistry showed no dehydration. Death in case

Effect of Three Commercially Available Die Hardening Agents on the Compressive Strength and Surface Hardness of Type IV Dental Stone: An In Vitro Study.

INTRODUCTION: Type IV dental stone is the material of choice for fabricating working dies in fixed prosthodontics because of its high strength and dimensional accuracy. However, repeated laboratory manipulation may reduce its surface integrity through abrasion and marginal deterioration. Limited evidence exists regarding the combined effect of various die hardeners and drying methods on the mechanical properties of Type IV dental stone. Therefore, the present in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effects of three commercially available die hardeners, used with two different drying protocols, on

Air sacs are a key adaptive trait of the insect respiratory system.

Air sacs are a well-known aspect of insect tracheal systems, but have received little research attention. In this Commentary, we suggest that the study of the distribution and function of air sacs in tracheate arthropods can provide insights of broad significance. We provide preliminary phylogenetic evidence that the developmental pathways for creation of air sacs are broadly conserved throughout the arthropods, and that possession of air sacs is strongly associated with a few traits, including the capacity for powerful flight, large body or appendage size and buoyancy control. We also discuss

Cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in "hostile" environments: Using automated compression devices to minimize the rescuers' danger.

Mechanical automated compression devices are being used in cardiopulmonary resuscitation instead of manual, "hands-on", rescuer-delivered chest compressions. The -theoretical- advantages include high-quality non-stop compressions, thus freeing the rescuer performing the compressions and additionally the ability of the rescuer to stand reasonably away from a potentially "hazardous" victim, or from hazardous and/or difficult resuscitation conditions. Such circumstances involve cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, especially directly under the fluoroscopy

[Postoperative tension pneumocephalus--report of 3 cases].

Three cases of tension pneumocephalus are reported and pathogenesis, clinical features and management of this complication is discussed. Case 1: A 12-year-old female underwent a craniotomy for a suprasellar tumor following V-P shunting. At that time, Mayfield's pin fixing head holder was used and a CSF leak from a puncture wound caused by the head holder was noted postoperatively. Although she showed uneventful recovery from the anesthesia, several hours after surgery, she developed general convulsions and deteriorated. CT scan revealed a huge bifrontal accumulation of air compressing the enti

Tension Pneumocephalus: A Rare Complication of Transsphenoidal Resection of a Pituitary Macroadenoma.

Tension pneumocephalus (TP) is described as the presence of a large amount of air in the cranial cavity, compressing the parenchyma and ventricles. It is a rare neurosurgical emergency and has been reported in only a handful of cases as a complication of transsphenoidal resection of a pituitary adenoma. Our reported case is an addition to the series of those cases. A 60-year-old male patient underwent transsphenoidal resection of a pituitary macroadenoma. Computed tomography (CT) of the head performed post-procedure showed post-surgical changes with no identification of any acute intracerebral

Starved air combustion-solidification/stabilization of primary chemical sludge from a tannery.

The high concentration of trivalent chromium along with organic/inorganic compounds in tannery sludge causes severe ground water contamination in the case of land disposal and chronic air pollution during incineration. In the present investigation, the sludge was subjected to flow-through column test to evaluate the concentration of leachable organics (tannin, COD and TOC) and heavy metal ions (Cr(3+), Fe(2+)) present in it. The dried sludge was incinerated at 800 degrees C in an incinerator under starved oxygen supply (starved-air combustion) to prevent the conversion of Cr(3+) to Cr(6+). The
