Walking through the valley of the shadow of death-The psychotherapy of the head and neck cancer patient expressing suicidal ideations and impulses.

The paper aims to show the multilevel and complex cooperation and the inclusion of the psychotherapist leading the psychotherapy in the medical team at the radiotherapy and clinical oncology clinic. We illustrate these interventions with the case of Stan. This 43-year-old firefighter was diagnosed with advanced head and neck cancer and pre-existing mental health problems meeting the criteria of ICD-10: obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and psychoactive substance abuse. During the treatment, suicidal thoughts and impulses emerged, triggered at the hospital by electro

The effect of exposure and response prevention therapy on obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis mainly examined the effect size of exposure and response prevention (ERP) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) when compared with different control conditions, and the difference in the efficacy of different variants of ERP in the treatment of OCD. Thirty studies were included, involving 39 randomized controlled trials with 1793 participants, from 30 studies up to January 18, 2022. Hedge's g was calculated using random-effects models. The results showed that ERP had a definite effect on OCD (g = 0.37), and its effect was significant when the control condition was placebo

Mindfulness-based relapse prevention targeting psychological craving and trait mindfulness in young Chinese women with methamphetamine dependence: a randomized controlled trial.

METHODS: We recruited 58 MA-dependent young adult females from a compulsory isolation drug rehabilitation center in Sichuan Province and randomly divided them into an MBRP group (n = 29) and a control group (n = 29) according to their degree of psychological craving. The MBRP group received 2 hours of MBRP training twice a week for 4 weeks, alongside routine treatment at the drug rehabilitation center. Meanwhile, the control group solely received routine treatment at the drug rehabilitation center without any additional interventions. The assessment was conducted before and immediately after t

Is There A Role For Lifestyle Interventions In Obsessive-Compulsive And Related Disorders?

Many of the currently available treatments for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) such as pharmacotherapy augmentation strategies, partial hospitalization programs, deep brain stimulation, and neurosurgery are efficacious for individuals suffering from more severe forms of these conditions. Unfortunately, the application of these treatments in milder forms of illness and subclinical samples, which affect a substantial portion of the population, is not justifiable by their costs (e.g. cognitivebehavioral therapy) and/or potential for side effects (serotonin-reuptake inhibitors a

Interactions between genetic risk for 21 neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders and sport activity on youth mental health.

Childhood is a sensitive period where behavioral disturbances, determined by genetics and environmental factors including sport activity, may emerge and impact risk of mental illness in adulthood. We aimed to determine if participation in sports can mitigate genetic risk for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in youth. We analyzed 4975 unrelated European youth (ages 9-10) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Our outcomes were eight Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scores, measured annually. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) were calculated for 21 disorders, and sport freq

COVID-19 and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in a large multi-site college sample.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses unique risks to college students' mental health, and specifically to symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To better understand the relationship between COVID-19 impact and OC symptoms in this population, six colleges from across the US administered a battery of questionnaires and an emotion differentiation paradigm to eligible students (N = 841). We examined whether degree of pandemic-related disruption was associated with OC severity, and if so, whether this relationship was explained by trait (poor emotion regulation and differentiation) and state risk

Longitudinal relationships between muscle dysmorphia symptoms and suicidal ideation.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) is a severe subtype of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) that shares symptomatic overlap with eating disorders. Although associations between eating disorders/BDD and suicidality are well documented, research has rarely examined associations between MD symptoms and suicidality, which is concerning given MD is associated with additional suicide risk factors compared with these disorders. Further, existing associations between MD symptoms and suicidality have yet to establish temporal ordering for these relationships. Therefore, the current study investigated lo

Maladaptive exercise: the hidden role of physical activity and sport professionals in the early detection of eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a significant public health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults. While physical activity (PA) is generally health-promoting, maladaptive exercise, characterized by compulsive and excessive activity linked to weight control, is often a core feature of ED pathology. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions, early identification remains a critical challenge, as most cases are detected only after severe organic or psychiatric complications. PA and sport professionals, such as personal trainers and coaches, are uniquely positioned to observe ea

Eating Disorders in Boys and Men: A Gender-Critical Narrative Review on Recognition, Stigma, and Treatment.

In this narrative review, I highlight diversity-related developments in eating disorder (ED) research, situate my own program of work on adult men within the broader literature on boys and men, and focus on risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment in boys and men. I build on recent reviews on gender in EDs but adopt a gender-critical perspective that asks why males remain comparatively invisible in epidemiology, diagnosis, and services despite their substantial burden of illness. EDs in males span the full diagnostic spectrum and often present with muscularity-oriented body dissatisfac

Neural circuits regulating activity-based anorexia.

Evolutionarily conserved neural circuits evolved that mediate switching between feeding and foraging for food, depending on environmental conditions such as food scarcity and internal state [1-3]. Activity-based anorexia is a phenomenon observed ubiquitously in normal mammals that emerges under conditions of time-restricted food availability and continuous access to running wheels. Under these experimental conditions, rodents progressively lose body weight and develop paradoxical hypophagia and compulsive wheel running, which can prove fatal if left unchecked. On the other hand, rodents surviv

Links among Parental Incarceration, Food Insecurity, Household Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Disordered Eating in United States Youth.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether parental incarceration is related to increased risk for disordered eating (ie, fasting, binge eating, purging, and compulsive exercise) among children and adolescents in the US. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from the 2022 and 2023 National Survey of Children's Health, an annual cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of US children. Analyses were restricted to youth ages 6-17 with parental incarceration data (n = 65 321). Logistic regression models were conducted, adjusting for age, sex, race, ethnicity, parental education, and body mass index. RESULTS: B

Understanding depression and anxiety symptom interrelations in Indonesian OCD patients: A network approach.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients often experience co-occurring symptoms of depression and anxiety, underscoring the needs for targeted clinical interventions that address overlapping symptoms. Network analysis offers a method to examine the symptom interrelations and identify key symptoms for OCD patients interventions. This study collected self-report data on depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) on OCD-diagnosed outpatients from a clinical psychology clinic in Jakarta, Indonesia (N = 232). The data were analyzed with several network analysis methods, including association networ

The lasting effects of childhood trauma on developing psychiatric symptoms: A population-based, large-scale comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) increases rates of psychiatric disorders and symptoms, however, the lasting effect of CT into adulthood has little exploration using large-scale samples. OBJECTIVES: This study estimated the prevalence of CT in a large sample of Chinese young adults, examining the risk factors of current psychological symptoms among those with CT experiences. METHODS: 117,769 college students were divided into CT and non-CT groups. The propensity score matching method balanced the confounding sociodemographic factors between the two groups, compared to 16 self-reported psych

[Characterization, epidemiology and trends of eating disorders].

Background: eating disorders are a group of conditions in which negative beliefs about food, body shape, and body weight together with behaviors such as restricted food intake, binge eating, excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, and use of laxatives. They can become serious, affect quality of life, and lead to multiple physical and even psychiatric complications with a fatal outcome. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the characteristics, epidemiology, and trends of eating disorders with updated information based on the most recent publications. Methods: we conducted a systematic

Is my patient too sad to approach their fear? Depression severity and imaginal exposure outcomes for patients with OCD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is conflicting research on how comorbid depression impacts the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) with exposure with response prevention. To better understand this relationship, the current study tests theoretical claims that greater depression limits motivation to engage in exposures, restricts habituation, and interferes with adaptive learning. METHODS: Fifty-one individuals with OCD completed a diagnostic interview and self-report questionnaires assessing depression symptom severity and then participated in a standardized imaginal exposure pro

[Cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders].

Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The former is characterized by failure to maintain a minimum normal body weight, while the latter is typified by recurrent binge eating followed by inappropriate compensating behavior, which may include self-inducing vomiting; abuse of laxatives, diuretics or other medications; fasting; and over-exercise. Because eating disorders are difficult to detect in the early stages and patients frequently try to hide their condition and avoid seeking medical help, medical treatment is sometimes sought only once a patient's condition poses a

Changes of Serum Homocysteine and Vitamin B12, but Not Folate Are Correlated With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) a complex neuropsychiatric disorder, is characterized by irresistible obsessive thinking and compulsive behavior. Folate is a member of water-soluble vitamins in the human body and sustains many normal daily activities (e.g., exercise, sleep, and memory). Homocysteine, a sulfur-containing non-essential amino acid, has been investigated in numerous psychiatric disorders (e.g., OCD). Vitamin B12 is a type of complex organic compound with cobalt contained. Moreover, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency and high levels of homocysteine were found to have

Eating disorders among patients incarcerated only for repeated shoplifting: a retrospective quasi-case-control study in a medical prison in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Shoplifting is a serious problem among patients with eating disorders. For more than a decade, we have treated many patients with eating disorders incarcerated in Hachioji Medical Prison only for repeated shoplifting. METHODS: We analyzed the prison records and medical records of female psychiatric patients transferred to Hachioji Medical Prison between 2002 and 2011. Based on the offense listed at the time of sentencing, we extracted a shoplifting group and a drug-offense group from among all patients with eating disorders. One patient from the former group who had used substance

Can Brief, Daily Training Using a Mobile App Help Change Maladaptive Beliefs? Crossover Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling condition with a wide variety of clinical presentations including contamination fears, fear of harm, and relationship-related obsessions. Cognitive behavioral models of OCD suggest that OC symptoms result from catastrophic misinterpretations of commonly occurring intrusive experiences and associated dysfunctional strategies used to manage them. OCD-related maladaptive beliefs including inflated responsibility, importance and control of thoughts, perfectionism, and intolerance for uncertainty increase the likelihood of such misinter
