Congenital pulmonary venolobar syndrome: spectrum of helical CT findings with emphasis on computerized reformatting.

The term congenital pulmonary venolobar syndrome refers to a wide spectrum of pulmonary developmental anomalies that may appear singly or in combination. The main components of congenital pulmonary venolobar syndrome are hypogenetic lung (including lobar agenesis, aplasia, or hypoplasia), partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, absence of pulmonary artery, pulmonary sequestration, systemic arterialization of lung, absence of inferior vena cava, and accessory diaphragm. The recent introduction of multisection helical computed tomography (CT), combined with use of advanced postprocessing grap

Three-dimensional reconstruction: methods of improving image registration and interpretation.

(i) Image registration. The use of serial images for computerised three-dimensional reconstruction necessitates the inclusion of three separate sources of information at the stage of data input. These are (i) artificial registration points or fiducials, (ii) a calibration scale and (iii) an outline of each slab of the section to be included in the reconstruction. Most traditional methods rely on the production of drawings of the contours of the structure under investigation which also include both registration points and a calibration scale. We report on a method which considerably reduces the

Computationally Efficient Bayesian Estimation of Graphical Networks for Omics Data.

Graphical networks are useful, widely used modeling approaches to represent complex biological processes with biological measurements generated by platforms such as mass spectrometry. Bayesian analyses of graphical networks for omics data have several advantages over their frequentist counterparts such as the inclusion of prior knowledge in the estimation of models. However, Bayesian approaches to date have only been feasible for data with a couple of hundred biomolecules due to prohibitive computational time, but omics data often contain tens of thousands of biomolecules. Here, we present and

DM-CFO: A Diffusion Model for Compositional 3D Tooth Generation With Collision-Free Optimization.

The automatic design of a 3D tooth model plays a crucial role in dental digitization. However, current approaches face challenges in compositional 3D tooth generation because both the layouts and shapes of missing teeth need to be optimized. In addition, collision conflicts are often omitted in 3D Gaussian-based compositional 3D generation, where objects may intersect with each other due to the absence of explicit geometric information on the object surfaces. Motivated by graph generation through diffusion models and collision detection using 3D Gaussians, we propose an approach named DM-CFO f

Trend-Centric Motion Visualization: Designing and Applying a New Strategy for Analyzing Scientific Motion Collections.

In biomechanics studies, researchers collect, via experiments or simulations, datasets with hundreds or thousands of trials, each describing the same type of motion (e.g., a neck flexion-extension exercise) but under different conditions (e.g., different patients, different disease states, pre- and post-treatment). Analyzing similarities and differences across all of the trials in these collections is a major challenge. Visualizing a single trial at a time does not work, and the typical alternative of juxtaposing multiple trials in a single visual display leads to complex, difficult-to-interpr

[Methods of advanced purification-the challenge for biosynthetic antibiotics industry].

Reactive extraction, permeation through liquid membranes and direct extraction are some of the new techniques applied for separation and advanced purification of biosynthetic antibiotics. Compared with the conventional separation techniques, the main advantages of these extraction methods are: high separation efficiency, the avoidance of antibiotics chemical and thermal inactivation, high purity of obtained antibiotics. Furthermore, using reactive extraction or permeation through liquid membrane, the antibiotics can be selective separated from their biosynthesis precursors or from the secondar

Gait-Synced Translation Gain for Naturalistic VR Motion.

Translation gain is a key Redirected Walking (RDW) technique in Virtual Reality (VR) that enables users to navigate virtual environments (VEs) larger than the available physical space. The technique was originally developed to scale users' walking distance in the VE and is typically applied continuously, regardless of the user's motion state. We introduce Gait-Synced Translation Gain (GSTG), a novel approach that adapts translation gain by synchronizing it with the user's gait cycle. GSTG leverages the single-limb support phase of walking-when users are less stable and thus less sensitive to e

GSmoothFace: Generalized Smooth Talking Face Generation via Fine Grained 3D Face Guidance.

Although existing speech-driven talking face generation methods achieve significant progress, they are far from real-world application due to the avatar-specific training demand and unstable lip movements. To address the above issues, we propose the GSmoothFace, a novel two-stage generalized talking face generation model guided by a fine-grained 3D face model, which can synthesize smooth lip dynamics while preserving the speaker's identity. Our proposed GSmoothFace model mainly consists of the Audio to Expression Prediction (A2EP) module and the Target Adaptive Face Translation (TAFT) module.

TOLEDO: enhancing Maestro GUI for non-expert users to perform massive MD simulations.

Classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulates the dynamical evolution of biological systems at the atomic level. Using MD in conjunction with high-performance computing (HPC) architectures, we can evaluate the possible interactions between a ligand library against one protein target to find a drug that can influence a protein target to cure a disease. Simultaneously, we can also obtain information about their dynamic evolution. One of the primary software packages for MD simulations is Desmond, which employs Maestro for the setup, execution, and analysis of MD through a graphical user interface

COVID-view: Diagnosis of COVID-19 using Chest CT.

Significant work has been done towards deep learning (DL) models for automatic lung and lesion segmentation and classification of COVID-19 on chest CT data. However, comprehensive visualization systems focused on supporting the dual visual+DL diagnosis of COVID-19 are non-existent. We present COVID-view, a visualization application specially tailored for radiologists to diagnose COVID-19 from chest CT data. The system incorporates a complete pipeline of automatic lungs segmentation, localization/isolation of lung abnormalities, followed by visualization, visual and DL analysis, and measurement

Influence of colour on acquisition and generalisation of graphic symbols.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism may benefit from using graphic symbols for their communication, language and literacy development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of colour versus grey-scale displays on the identification of graphic symbols using a computer-based intervention. METHOD: An alternating treatment design was employed to examine the learning and generalisation of 58 colour and grey-scale symbols by four preschool children with autism. The graphic symbols were taught via a meaning-based intervention using stories and educational games. RESULTS AND CONCLU

Medicinal chemistry: a support or a driving force in drug research?

The foregoing has demonstrated most emphatically the significant and central role which chemistry plays in modern and future drug research. It does not mean to diminish the important role of biology but it does serve to show that chemistry is not merely a support for the needs of biology but is a powerful driving force in itself. The two disciplines are essentially interdependent and each relies on the other for success in drug design, discovery and eventual delivery of a useful medicament to the patient. Finally, the medicinal chemist today is faced with as many if not more formidable challen

Self-Initialized Locomotion Mode Prediction With GPU-Free Terrain Reconstruction.

Lower-limb wearable robots require accurate Locomotion Mode Prediction (LMP) to provide appropriate assistance across diverse terrains. Recent reconstruction-based LMP methods fuse high-dimensional multimodal sensor data to model the relationship between human motion and terrains, improving prediction accuracy and cross-terrain adaptability. However, they typically incur high computational cost, including GPU dependency, and often require initialization procedures involving wearer participation or professional supervision. This paper proposes a self-initialized, GPU-free LMP method to overcome

SurfaceXR: Fusing Smartwatch IMUs and Egocentric Hand Pose for Seamless Surface Interactions.

Mid-air gestures in Extended Reality (XR) often lead to fatigue, discomfort and imprecision, limiting their suitability for extended use. Surface-based interactions offer a compelling alternative, providing improved accuracy, speed, and comfort. However, current egocentric vision-based methods struggle with reliable surface inputs due to challenges in hand tracking and surface plane estimation from oblique and occluded viewing angles. To this extent, we introduce SurfaceXR, a novel sensor fusion approach that combines headset based hand tracking with micro-vibration data sampled from commodity

Effects of Transfer Functions and Body Parts on Body-Centric Locomotion in Virtual Reality.

Body-centric locomotion allows users to control both movement speed and direction with body parts (e.g., head tilt, arm swing or torso lean) to navigate in virtual reality (VR). However, there is little research to systematically investigate the effects of body parts for speed and direction control on virtual locomotion by taking in account different transfer functions(L: linear function, P: power function, and CL: piecewise function with constant and linear function). Therefore, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the combinational effects of the three factors (body parts for direction con

Omnidirectional Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation in Virtual Reality.

In this paper we propose omnidirectional galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) to mitigate cybersickness in virtual reality applications. One of the most accepted theories indicates that Cybersickness is caused by the visually induced impression of ego motion while physically remaining at rest. As a result of this sensory mismatch, people associate negative symptoms with VR and sometimes avoid the technology altogether. To reconcile the two contradicting sensory perceptions, we investigate GVS to stimulate the vestibular canals behind our ears with low-current electrical signals that are speci

Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery for Intrasellar Mixed Germ Cell Tumors.

A mixed germ cell tumor (MGCT) in the neurohypophysis is very rare, with only a few reported cases1-4 but none with surgical videos. In this report, the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach for MGCT in the neurohypophysis is presented (Video 1). A 12-year-old girl with ocular pain, fatigue, and nausea presented with gradual onset of quadrant hemianopsia and left oculomotor palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an enhanced mass in the sella turcica with multiple components involving the pituitary gland and stalk. Her endocrinological examination showed decreased levels of pituitary

Robust Heterogeneity Adjustment for Gaussian Graphical Model With Latent Variables.

Graphical models serve as fundamental tools for encoding conditional dependence structures in multivariate biological data, with latent variable Gaussian graphical models playing a pivotal role in capturing complex dependencies in the presence of unobserved confounding variables. However, practical implementations often face two critical challenges: systematic heterogeneity arising from unobserved subpopulations (e.g., tumor subtypes, cell clusters, or patient stratifications) and outliers (e.g., technical artifacts or rare phenotypic variations), both of which can substantially distort the un

Improved Visualization Method of DNA Sequences and its Application in Phylogenetic Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: With a large number of species' genomes assembled, sequence comparison has become an effective method for further studying biological classification and evolution. Traditional sequence alignment relies on predefined scoring functions, but it is computationally intensive and lacks molecular justification for scoring the differences between sequences. Therefore, we have developed a graphical representation method for DNA sequences to facilitate better sequence comparison and evolutionary analysis. METHOD: In this article, we introduce a novel method for representing DNA sequences
