Accuracy vs. computational time: translating aortic simulations to the clinic.

State of the art simulations of aortic haemodynamics feature full fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and coupled 0D boundary conditions. Such analyses require not only significant computational resource but also weeks to months of run time, which compromises the effectiveness of their translation to a clinical workflow. This article employs three computational fluid methodologies, of varying levels of complexity with coupled 0D boundary conditions, to simulate the haemodynamics within a patient-specific aorta. The most comprehensive model is a full FSI simulation. The simplest is a rigid walled

Synchronizing computer simulations with measurement data for a case of atrial flutter.

Atrial flutter is a common supraventricular tachycardia that can be treated using radiofrequency catheter ablation, a procedure that is guided by electroanatomical mapping systems. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for incorporating mapping data into computer simulations of atrial electrical activity with the purpose of creating a more accurate map of electrical activation. The algorithm takes as input the extracellular potential values recorded at a number of sites throughout the atria and estimates the activation time for the entire atrial domain. We test the algorithm using synthetic m

Hemodynamic simulations and computer-aided designs of graft-artery junctions.

Severe occlusion of graft-artery junctions due to restenosis, e.g., excessive tissue overgrowth and renewed plaque formation, may occur within a few months or years after bypass surgery. Our hypothesis is that nonuniform hemodynamics, represented by large sustained wall shear stress gradients, trigger abnormal biological processes leading to rapid restenosis and hence early graft failure. In turn, this problem may be significantly mitigated by designing graft-artery bypass configurations for which the wall shear stress gradient (WSSG) is approximately zero and hence nearly uniform hemodynamics

Computer simulations of chondrocytic clone behaviour in rabbit growth plates.

The growth behaviour of chondrocytic clones in the cell columns of the proximal tibial growth plates of young rabbits was modelled in computer simulations. Simulations were performed, modelling either clones in large groups of columns or clones in one single column. The former were based on morphological data and measurements of cell columns from an earlier study while the latter utilised previous findings of cellular kinetics in rabbit growth plates. Simulation results that resembled most closely the actual observations on rabbit growth plates were those in which a distribution of values was

Molecular interaction between AMD-070 with human serum albumin: insights from network pharmacology, multispectral technology and computer simulation.

AMD-070 (also known as Xolremdi, Mavorixafor) is an immunotherapeutic agent approved in 2024 for the treatment of WHIM syndrome. This study integrates network pharmacology, multispectral spectroscopy, and computational simulations to investigate the interaction between AMD-070 and human serum albumin (HSA). Network pharmacological screening identified six candidate proteins that may bind AMD-070, among which HSA was predicted to have the strongest binding affinity. The binding mechanism demonstrates that the ligand spontaneously associates with HSA site I, driven mainly by hydrophobic forces a

Ureteral tunnel length versus ureteral orifice configuration in the determination of ureterovesical junction competence: A computer simulation model.

INTRODUCTION: The long-held belief that a ureteral re-implant tunnel should be five times the diameter of the ureter, as proposed by Paquin in 1959, ignores the effect of the orifice on the occurrence of reflux. In 1969, Lyon proposed that the shape of the ureteral orifice (UO) is more important than the intravesical tunnel. However, both theories missed quantitative evidence from principles of physics. The goal of the current study was to test Lyon's theory through numerical models (i.e. to quantify the sensitivity of ureterovesical junction (UVJ) competence to intravesical tunnel length and

Computer-aided identification of natural lead compounds as cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors using virtual screening and molecular dynamic simulation.

In order to find more natural lead-compounds as inhibitors for Cyclooxygenase-2, the essential structural features for human cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors and 3D-Quantitative structure activity relationship (3D-QSAR) model were carried out based on dataset from three confirmatory bioassays using Phase program. Six point pharmacophore (AAHRRR) of COX-2 selective inhibitors was generated from training set of 52 compounds. The 3D-QSAR model was selected as having favourable statistic measures (R2 = 0.93, Q2ext = 0.81) for the training set and test set respectively. This model was developed using th

Protocol for concomitant temporomandibular joint custom-fitted total joint reconstruction and orthognathic surgery using computer-assisted surgical simulation.

Combined orthognathic and total joint reconstruction cases can be predictably performed in 1 stage. Use of virtual surgical planning can eliminate a significant time requirement in preparation of concomitant orthognathic and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prostheses cases. The concomitant TMJ and orthognathic surgery-computer-assisted surgical simulation technique increases the accuracy of combined cases. In order to have flexibility in positioning of the total joint prosthesis, recontouring of the lateral aspect of the rami is advantageous.

Protocol for concomitant temporomandibular joint custom-fitted total joint reconstruction and orthognathic surgery utilizing computer-assisted surgical simulation.

Clinicians who address temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathology and dentofacial deformities surgically can perform the surgery in 1 stage or 2 separate stages. The 2-stage approach requires the patient to undergo 2 separate operations and anesthesia, significantly prolonging the overall treatment. However, performing concomitant TMJ and orthognathic surgery (CTOS) in these cases requires careful treatment planning and surgical proficiency in the 2 surgical areas. This article presents a new treatment protocol for the application of computer-assisted surgical simulation in CTOS cases requiring r

Effect of blood flow, tumour and cold stress in a female breast: a novel time-accurate computer simulation.

Breast cancer is a dreadful disease among women and early detection helps in achieving a cure. The mammogram is presently the standard tool for detecting breast abnormality, but its sensitivity is lower for women with dense breasts. It has been found that women with an abnormal thermogram are at a higher risk and have a poorer prognosis. However, performing and interpreting thermograms requires meticulous training. Computer simulations can be an additional tool to help the clinician in the interpretation. In this paper, a novel and flexible finite element model of a female breast is developed.

Computer simulation of Babesia bovis (Babes) and B. bigemina (Smith & Kilborne) transmission by Boophilus cattle ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

A computer model was developed to simulate the processes involved in transmission of the cattle fever parasites Babesia bovis (Babes) and Babesia bigemina (Smith & Kilborne) between cattle and Boophilus ticks. The model of Babesia transmission was combined with a dynamic life history model for population dynamics of the tick vectors, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) and B. annulatus (Say). Epidemiological parameters and relationships in the model include the reduction in fecundity of infected ticks, rate of transovarial transmission, effect of cattle type and inoculation rate on infectivity of

Computational design of functional random heteropolymers through atomistic simulations.

Random heteropolymers (RHPs) are emerging single-chain nanoparticles with great potential in protein mimicry, yet a systematic understanding of how chemical composition and monomer structures govern their structure, dynamics, and hydration remains limited. Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we examine how various design parameters, including chain length, backbone architecture, charged monomer concentration, chain-level composition, and side-chain micropolarity influence RHP assembly and hydration behavior. As chain length increases, methacrylate-based RHPs transition from rod-lik

MEGA: a computational framework to simulate the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a critical condition that necessitates mechanical ventilation (MV) to ensure sufficient ventilation and oxygenation for patients. Intensivists employ various therapeutic tools such as adjusting positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) levels or positioning the patient prone. However, practitioners encounter several challenges when dealing with ARDS: high variability among patients and limited understanding of underlying mechanisms. As a result, decision-making by physicians largely relies on experience. Yet, having the ability to estimate the li

The hybrid (physical-computational) cardiovascular simulator to study valvular diseases.

To better understand the impact of valvular heart disease (VHD) on the hemodynamics of the circulatory system, investigations can be carried out using a model of the cardiovascular system. In this study, a previously developed hybrid (hydro-numerical) simulator of the cardiovascular system (HCS) was adapted and used. In our HCS Björk-Shiley mechanical heart valves were used, playing the role of mitral and aortic ones. In order to simulate aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR), special mechanical devices have been developed and integrated with the HCS. The simulation results proved

Classification of ossicular fixation based on a computational simulation of ossicular mobility.

Ossicular fixation disturbs the mobility of the ossicular chain and causes conductive hearing loss. To diagnose the lesion area, otologists typically assess ossicular mobility through intraoperative palpation. Quantification of ossicular mobility and evidence-based diagnostic criteria are necessary for accurate assessment of each pathology, because diagnosis via palpation can rely on the surgeons' experiences and skills. In this study, ossicular mobilities were simulated in 92 pathological cases of ossicular fixation as compliances using a finite-element (FE) model of the human middle ear. The
