When concepts lose their color: a case of object-color knowledge impairment.

Color is important in our daily interactions with objects, and plays a role in both low- and high-level visual processing. Previous neuropsychological studies have shown that color perception and object-color knowledge can doubly dissociate, and that both can dissociate from processing of object form. We present a case study of an individual who displayed an impairment for knowledge of the typical colors of objects, with preserved color perception and color naming. Our case also presented with a pattern of, if anything, worse performance for naming living items compared to non-living things. T

What is in a tool concept? Dissociating manipulation knowledge from function knowledge.

Research on patients with apraxia, a deficit in skilled action, has shown that the ability to use objects may be differentially impaired relative to knowledge about object function. Here we show, using a modified neuropsychological test, that similar dissociations can be observed in response times in healthy adults. Participants were asked to decide which two of three presented objects shared the same manipulation or the same function; triads were presented in picture and word format, and responses were made manually (button press) or with a basic-level naming response (verbally). For manual r

Dynamics and constraints in insight problem solving.

This article reports 2 experiments that investigated performance on a novel insight problem, the 8-coin problem. The authors hypothesized that participants would make certain initial moves (strategic moves) that seemed to make progress according to the problem instructions but that nonetheless would guarantee failure to solve the problem. Experiment 1 manipulated the starting state of the problem and showed that overall solution rates were lower when such strategic moves were available. Experiment 2 showed that failure to capitalize on visual hints about the correct first move was also associa

Individual differences in story comprehension and recall of poor readers.

This study sought to identify poor readers and characterise weaknesses in their knowledge and use of story structure in comprehension and recall. Eighty year 3 children, 20 good readers and 60 poor readers, were selected from an initial pool of children based on factor analysis of scores from three measures of reading ability. The poor readers were then divided into relatively homogeneous subgroups, using eight additional measures of language-reading comprehension, according to a numerical classification procedure. This procedure helped identify specific weaknesses in their language-reading co

The effect of extra time on reading comprehension scores for university students with and without learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of extra time on the ability of university students with and without learning disabilities to complete a reading comprehension test under timed and extra-time conditions. The participants were 16 students identified as having learning disabilities and 15 normally achieving students, all attending the University of California. The Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension and Reading Rate Test was used. Percentile ranks were obtained for reading rates on individuals, and for comprehension scores under timed and extra-time conditions. The major findi

Comparisons of learning ease and transfer propensity in poor and average readers.

Assisted and unassisted performance of 14 average readers (7 boys and 7 girls between 9.67 and 13 years of age) and 14 children with learning disabilities (10 boys and 4 girls between 10.8 and 13 years of age) were compared on a reading comprehension task--stating the main idea in expository paragraphs in which the topic sentence was either first, last, or missing. Children were trained to find the main idea in one- and two-paragraph texts and took pre- and posttests in which they were asked to write the main ideas contained in one-, and six- to eight-paragraph texts. The main ideas contained

Metaphoric competence in children with learning disabilities.

Metaphoric competence was examined in two groups of children with learning disabilities and one group of nondisabled peers ranging in age from 9-0 to 11-0 years. There were five girls and seven boys in each group. One group of students with learning disabilities had a history of spoken language impairment and the other group did not. Subjects were administered three verbal metaphor tasks (comprehension, preference, and completion) and a visual metaphor task, the Metaphor Triads Task (MTT). The three verbal metaphor tasks were administered in three contexts: (a) sentence, (b) story, and (c) sto

Superior efficacy of azithromycin and levamisole vs. azithromycin in the treatment of inflammatory acne vulgaris: an investigator blind randomized clinical trial on 169 patients.

UNLABELLED: It is well known that children first learn words with concrete meaning, whereas abstract ones are typically acquired later. To obtain clues about the underlying causes and mechanisms, a brain-constrained neural network model of brain regions involved in semantic processing was trained on instances of concrete and abstract concepts. Model areas contained excitatory and inhibitory neurons, with Hebbian and anti-Hebbian synaptic plasticity rules. This allowed for the formation of neuronal circuits representing different concepts. Concept formation was simulated based on the similarity

Which ERP components are involved in naïve-scientific concept tasks? Evidence for N400 effects and a reconsideration of the N2.

BACKGROUND: Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies investigating the neural processing of scientific and naïve concepts have suggested that the conflict between these two types of concepts is reflected in a negative-going N2 component. However, the evidence from those studies remains inconclusive. The present study examined which ERP components reflect concept-based processing. METHODS: We used word stimuli in a living-nonliving categorization task, a representative task involving conflict between naïve and scientific concepts. ERPs were recorded from undergraduate and graduate studen

Effects of context on different kinds of fact learning.

Context affects human memory. Similarities between learning and retrieval environments facilitate memory, whereas dissimilarities disrupt memory. However, it is unclear whether the type of information being learned is relevant. In this experiment, we explored whether 2-year-olds demonstrate different patterns of context-dependent memory for category-relevant and category-irrelevant facts. Children (N = 48) were exposed to unfamiliar objects in consistent (match condition) or variable (multiple condition) contexts across training and test trials. Objects were paired with category-relevant (e.g.

Susto as a cultural conceptualization of distress: Existing research and aspects to consider for future investigations.

Among the cultural conceptualizations of distress, susto is defined in the DSM-5 as "a cultural explanation of distress and misfortune in Latin America that refers to an illness attributed to a terrifying event that causes the soul to leave the body and leads to unhappiness and illness, as well as difficulties in performing key social functions" (American Psychiatric Association (APA) (2013). Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition. Washington, DC: APA, p. 836). Thus, susto represents a cultural explanation that encompasses the symptoms of various mental disorders an

Measurement and conceptualization of maternal PTSD following childbirth: Psychometric properties of the City Birth Trauma Scale-French Version (City BiTS-F).

OBJECTIVE: The City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) assesses posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms following childbirth (PTSD-FC). Recent studies investigating the latent factor structure of PTSD-FC in women reported mixed results. No validated French questionnaire exists to measure PTSD-FC symptoms. Therefore, this study first aimed to validate the French version of the City BiTS (City BiTS-F). Second, it aimed to establish the latent factor structure of PTSD-FC. METHOD: French-speaking women with infants aged 1 to 12 months old (n = 541) completed an online cross-sectional survey. Questionn

Persistent sparing of action conceptual processing in spite of increasing disorders of action production: A case against motor embodiment of action concepts.

In this study, we addressed the issue of whether the brain sensorimotor circuitry that controls action production is causally involved in representing and processing action-related concepts. We examined the three-year pattern of evolution of brain atrophy, action production disorders, and action-related concept processing in a patient (J.R.) diagnosed with corticobasal degeneration. During the period of investigation, J.R. presented with increasing action production disorders resulting from increasing bilateral atrophy in cortical and subcortical regions involved in the sensorimotor control of

Origins of the specialization for letters and numbers in ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

Deep in the occipitotemporal cortex lie two functional regions, the visual word form area (VWFA) and the number form area (NFA), which are thought to play a special role in letter and number recognition, respectively. We review recent progress made in characterizing the origins of these symbol form areas in children or adults, sighted or blind subjects, and humans or monkeys. We propose two non-mutually-exclusive hypotheses on the origins of the VWFA and NFA: the presence of a connectivity bias, and a sensitivity to shape features. We assess the explanatory power of these hypotheses, describe

The emergence of a novel representation from action: evidence from preschoolers.

Recent work in embodied cognition has proposed that representations and actions are inextricably linked. The current study examines a developmental account of this relationship. Specifically, we propose that children's actions are foundational for novel representations. Thirty-two preschoolers, aged 3.4 to 5.7 years, were asked to solve a set of simple gear-system problems. Participants' motions and verbalizations were coded to establish the strategies they used. The preschoolers initially solved the problems by simulating the turning and pushing of the gears. Subsequently, most participants d

Script knowledge enhances the development of children's false memories.

We examined whether script knowledge contributes to the development of children's false memories. Sixty 7-year-old and 60 11-year-old children listened to false narratives describing either a high-knowledge event (i.e., fingers being caught in a mousetrap) or a low-knowledge event (i.e., receiving a rectal enema) that were similar in terms of plausibility and pleasantness. Moreover, half of the children in each condition received additional suggestive details about the false events. Across two interviews, children had to report everything they remembered about the events. Script knowledge affe

The effect of midazolam on implicit and explicit memory in category exemplar production and category cued recall.

Transfer-appropriate processing theory (Roediger, Weldon, & Challis, 1989) proposes that dissociations between performance on explicit and implicit memory tests arise because these tests often rely on different types of information processing (e.g., perceptual processing vs conceptual processing). This perspective predicts that implicit and explicit memory tasks that rely primarily on conceptual processing should show comparable results, not dissociations. Numerous studies have demonstrated such similarities. It is, however, possible that these results arise from explicit memory contamination

An evaluation of the dyslexia training program: a multisensory method for promoting reading in students with reading disabilities.

The development of reading and spelling skills in students with dyslexia, by definition, is delayed and often remains delayed despite years of instruction. Three qualities are thought to facilitate reading development in these children: the provision of a highly structured phonetic-instruction training program with heavy emphasis on the alphabetic system, drill and repetition to compensate for short-term verbal memory deficits, and multisensory methods to promote nonlanguage mental representations. The Dyslexia Training Program, a remedial reading program derived from Orton-Gillingham methods,
