BACKGROUND: Bacterial conjunctivitis is one of the most common forms of ocular diseases worldwide. The purpose of this study is to determine the most common pathogens causing bacterial conjunctivitis, their in vitro susceptibility to existing antibiotics, and the changing trends in bacterial resistance to antibiotics over the last decade.
METHODS: Records of all conjunctival bacterial cultures performed at the NYEEI Microbiology Laboratory from 1 January 1997 through 30 June 2008 were reviewed. Data on species of bacterial isolates and their in vitro susceptibility to the antibiotics tetracyc

BACKGROUND: S. pneumoniae is a known cause of bacterial conjunctivitis and can be transmitted through contact with infected carriers.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old ophthalmologist developing reactive arthritis following clinic-acquired pneumococcal conjunctivitis.
CONCLUSION: (1) Despite the frequency and largely self-limiting nature of infective conjunctivitis, it should be appropriately assessed and managed, as the natural history can occasionally be associated with significant morbidity. (2) Hygienic measures are required to be implemented by both patients and ophthalmic staff to reduc

Red eye is the cardinal sign of ocular inflammation. The condition is usually benign and can be managed by primary care physicians. Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye. Other common causes include blepharitis, corneal abrasion, foreign body, subconjunctival hemorrhage, keratitis, iritis, glaucoma, chemical burn, and scleritis. Signs and symptoms of red eye include eye discharge, redness, pain, photophobia, itching, and visual changes. Generally, viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are self-limiting conditions, and serious complications are rare. Because there is no specific diagn

Immunoglobulin concentrations in human tears were determined in 165 patients with different eye diseases by a standard radial immunodiffusion method. IgA was present in all the samples in measurable quantity. The mean IgA values were significantly higher than the controls in patients with acute bacterial conjunctivitis, keratomalacia, corneal graft reaction, blepharoconjunctivitis, and acute keratoconjunctivitis. The values in the patients with vernal conjunctivitis, phlyctenular conjunctivitis, acute bacterial corneal ulcer, and acute endogenous uveitis were not significantly different from t

IMPORTANCE: Off-label treatment was common for ophthalmia neonatorum because only erythromycin ointment had been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this indication. Ophthalmia neonatorum was previously considered a different indication from bacterial conjunctivitis in older children and adults because of uncertain similarities in the cause of disease and the treatment course between the 2 populations. Prospective therapeutic clinical studies were required to demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment for ophthalmia neonatorum.
OBJECTIVE: To review the therapeutic clinic

Infectious conjunctivitis is no longer a common eye disease in cities and developed areas, but in remote mountainous regions of China where living conditions are relatively under-developed, the occurrence of infectious conjunctivitis remains a public health issue. Here, we evaluate the ratio of infectious conjunctivitis among primary school students in the rural areas of Xunhua, Huangyuan, and Huzhu Counties in the Qinghai province of China, and report the microorganisms involved in causing infection. Of the 765 eligible primary school students, 694 participated to this study (a response rateo

Red eye is a common presentation in clinical practice with conjunctivitis being the most common cause of red eye. Most commonly, conjunctivitis is infective (bacterial and viral) or allergic in origin although other forms of conjunctivitis including toxic and irritative conjunctivitis and conjunctivitis related to systemic conditions or dry eye are prevalent enough to warrant consideration in diagnosis. This article aims to provide a guide for generalists and allergists in the differential diagnosis of conjunctivitis allowing the inclusion of eye treatment into their current practice. With a d

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) face the challenge of diagnosing conjunctivitis accurately and confidently. Conjunctivitis and red eye are common presentations that confer diagnostic uncertainty. GPs are pivotal in diagnosing and managing conjunctivitis-like symptoms, making them a critical first port of call for patients. Accurately identifying and treating this common eye infection can help ensure the best possible outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This article presents an overview of conjunctivitis, exploring its causes and how to accurately assess and diagnose. We also discuss how to safely re

Despite dramatic declines in the incidence of ophthalmia neonatorum with universal prophylaxis, it remains a clinically important cause of eye disease in newborns. While clear guidelines exist for the treatment of the historically primary agents of ophthalmia neonatorum (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae), it is less clear how to manage newborns with conjunctivitis secondary to other bacterial organisms, particularly those also frequently implicated in neonatal sepsis. We present the case of a 3-day-old well-appearing term infant with unilateral purulent conjunctivitis. The eye c

Neisseria meningitidis is an uncommon cause of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. One case of primary meningococcal conjunctivitis in a healthy 6-year-old boy is reported. The patient was initially treated with a topical instillation of polymyxin B, neomycin and gramicidin in ophthalmic solution, and this was followed by systemic rifampin once the diagnosis had been established. No ocular or systemic complications developed.

The authors present 10 patients treated for Wegener's granulomatosis. In 5 of of them (50%) the ocular changes were observed: in 3-infiltration of the orbit, including one case with infiltration of lacrimal ducts, and in 2-the recurrent bacterial conjunctivitis. On the account of the rareness of the disease and its various symptoms, the diagnosis, in some cases, was made fairly late. It was emphasized that the ocular lesions may be the first symptoms of Wegener's granulomatosis. The bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, scleritis, and orbital pseudotumor in patients with chronic respiratory tra

BACKGROUND: Although high-density resequencing microarray is useful for detection and tracking the evolution of viruses associated with respiratory tract infections, no report on using this technology for the detection of viruses in patients with conjunctivitis is available.
OBJECTIVES: To test if high-density resequencing microarray can be applied to detection of viruses in conjunctival swabs for patients with conjunctivitis.
STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective proof-of-concept study, every 4 or 5 bacterial culture-negative conjunctival swab samples were pooled and subject to viral detection

Neisseria meningitidis is an unusual pathogen among the causes of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Meningococcal conjunctivitis may present as primary or secondary infection, while primary meningococcal conjunctivitis may emerge as invasive or non-invasive forms. N.meningitidis W135 strain is not common in Turkey, and is rarely reported as the cause of meningitis. Moreover, no cases of conjunctivitis due to N.meningitidis W135 were reported from Turkey. In this report a case of N.meningitidis W135 conjunctivitis has been presented who acquired the infection from another patient with meningococc

Corticosteroid use as an anti-inflammatory agent in infective conjunctivitis has been met with concerns about prolonged infection. This systematic review aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of corticosteroids as a treatment for infective conjunctivitis. A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Embase, and ProQuest for clinical trials of topical corticosteroids with or without combination with other medications in bacterial or viral conjunctivitis up to November 2023. The studies were screened, and data on safety and efficacy were extracted. The qual

Pseudomembranous conjunctivitis, caused by inflammation of the conjunctiva, is characterized by conjunctival injection, mucopurulent discharge, and formation of a thin membrane overlying the conjunctiva. This is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection. This case report discusses pseudomembranous conjunctivitis from Escherichia coli in a newborn infant which, to our knowledge, has not been reported in relevant literature. This infection was likely transmitted perinatally given that the mother of the infant had blood cultures growing E. coli with the same susceptibilities as the newborn.
