Schizophrenia-like neurophysiological abnormalities in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and their association to COMT and PRODH genotypes.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a common genetic risk factor for the development of schizophrenia. We investigated two neurophysiological endophenotypes of schizophrenia - P50 sensory gating and mismatch negativity in 22q11.2DS subject and evaluated their association with catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) and proline dehydrogenase (PRODH) genetic variants. We also assessed the association of neurophysiological measures with schizophrenia-like symptomatology in 22q11.2DS. Fifty-nine subjects, 41 with 22q11.2DS and 18 typically developing controls, participated in the study. The parti

A hemodynamic correlate of lateralized visual short-term memories.

Neuroimaging studies attempting to isolate the neural substrate of visual short-term memory in humans have concentrated on the behavior of neurons populating the posterior part of the parietal cortex as a possible source of visual short-term memory capacity limits. Using a standard change-detection task, fMRI studies have shown that maintenance of bilaterally encoded objects elicited bilateral increases of hemodynamic activation in the intra-parietal and intra-occipital sulci (IPS-IOS) proportional to the number of objects retained in visual short-term memory. We used a spatially cued variant

First genome-wide association scan on neurophysiological endophenotypes points to trans-regulation effects on SLC2A3 in dyslexic children.

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disorders affecting about 5% of all school-aged children. It has been shown that event-related potential measurements reveal differences between dyslexic children and age-matched controls. This holds particularly true for mismatch negativity (MMN), which reflects automatic speech deviance processing and is altered in dyslexic children. We performed a whole-genome association analysis in 200 dyslexic children, focusing on MMN measurements. We identified rs4234898, a marker located on chromosome 4q32.1, to be significantly associated with the late MMN

The Bereitschaftspotential in essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: Essential tremor (ET) is an involuntary postural oscillation. It is unclear to which extent motor cortical activity in preparation of volitional movement is abnormal in ET. We measured the Bereitschaftspotential (BP) to address this question. METHODS: Given the known influence of the cerebello-dentato-thalamo-cortical projection in the generation of the BP, patients were divided into two groups, defined by purely postural tremor (ET(PT)) or additional presence of intention tremor (ET(IT)) and compared to healthy controls. BP was recorded during self-paced rapid wrist extension move

Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on movement-related cortical activity in humans.

Several lines of evidence suggest that low-rate repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the motor cortex at 1 Hz reduces the excitability of the motor cortex and produces metabolic changes under and at a distance from the stimulated side. Therefore, it has been suggested that rTMS may have beneficial effects on motor performance in patients with movement disorders. However, it is still unknown in what way these effects can be produced. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether rTMS of the motor cortex (15 min at 1 Hz) is able to modify the voluntary movement related

Motivationally salient cue processing measured using the monetary incentive delay (MID) task with electroencephalography (EEG): A potential marker of apathy in Huntington's disease.

We explored the utility of the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task with concurrent encephalography (EEG) as a marker of apathy in people with Huntington's disease (HD) as well as neurotypical controls. Specifically, we assessed between and within-group differences in the amplitude of the P300 and Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) event-related potentials as a function of motivational salience. In contrast to neurotypical controls, HD participants' ERP amplitudes were not differentially modulated by motivationally salient cues (i.e., signalling potential 'gain' or 'loss') compared to 'neutral

The Electrical Aftermath: Brain Signals of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Filtered Through a Clinical Lens.

This review aims to identify patterns of electrical signals identified using electroencephalography (EEG) linked to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis and symptom dimensions. We filter EEG findings through a clinical lens, evaluating nuances in findings according to study criteria and participant characteristics. Within the EEG frequency domain, greater right than left parietal asymmetry in alpha band power is the most promising marker of PTSD symptoms and is linked to exaggerated physiological arousal that may impair filtering of environmental distractors. The most consistent find

Error-related brain activity in youth and young adults before and after treatment for generalized or social anxiety disorder.

Increased error monitoring, as measured by the error-related negativity (ERN), has been shown to persist after treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder in youth and adults; however, no previous studies have examined the ERN following treatment for related anxiety disorders. We used a flanker task to elicit the ERN in 28 youth and young adults (8-26years old) with primary diagnoses of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or social anxiety disorder (SAD) and 35 healthy controls. Patients were assessed before and after treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or selective serotonin reup

Abnormal cortical processing of the syllable rate of speech in poor readers.

Children with reading impairments have long been associated with impaired perception for rapidly presented acoustic stimuli and recently have shown deficits for slower features. It is not known whether impairments for low-frequency acoustic features negatively impact processing of speech in reading-impaired individuals. Here we provide neurophysiological evidence that poor readers have impaired representation of the speech envelope, the acoustical cue that provides syllable pattern information in speech. We measured cortical-evoked potentials in response to sentence stimuli and found that good

Genetics of preparation and response control in ADHD: the role of DRD4 and DAT1.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with performance and brain activity related to attentional orienting (Cue-P3), cognitive or response preparation (Cue-CNV) and inhibitory response control (Nogo-P3) during tasks tapping executive functions are familial in ADHD and may represent endophenotypes. The aim of this study was to clarify the impact of dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) and dopamine transporter (DAT1) gene polymorphisms on these processes in ADHD and control children. METHODS: Behavioural and electrophysiological parameters from cued continuous performance tests with low and high attentional load wer

[Clinical neurophysiology of movement disorders].

Movement disorders are physiologically studied based on three principles; 1. relation between movements and brain activities, 2. excitability and inhibitory mechanisms of motor cortices, and 3. sensorimotor integration. Regardless of voluntary or involuntary movements, the study on how the movement in question is related to brain activities provides an important information as to its pathophysiology. This can be studied by jerk-locked averaging of electroencephalogram or magnetoencephalogram in case of involuntary movements and movement-related cortical potentials for voluntary movements, chan

Brain indices of nicotine's effects on attentional bias to smoking and emotional pictures and to task-relevant targets.

Aversive and smoking-related stimuli are related to smoking urges and relapse and can be potent distractors of selective attention. It has been suggested that the beneficial effect of nicotine replacement therapy may be mediated partly by the ability of nicotine to reduce distraction by such stimuli and thereby to facilitate attention to task-relevant stimuli. The present study tested the hypothesis that nicotine reduces distraction by aversive and smoking-related stimuli as indexed by the parietal P3b brain response to a task-relevant target digit. We assessed the effect of nicotine on distra

Frontolimbic activity and cognitive bias in major depression.

In order to explore neural activity that accompanies cognitive bias in mood disorders, the authors had clinically depressed and nondepressed controls complete a self-evaluation procedure in which they indicated whether trait words were self-descriptive. Dense-array (256-channel) electroencephalography was recorded. Greater depression and low Positive Affect were associated with decreased endorsement of favorable (Good) traits, and greater anxiety and high Negative Affect were associated with increased endorsement of unfavorable (Bad) traits. For controls, the event-related potential (ERP) show

Comparison of brain mechanisms underlying the processing of Chinese characters and pseudo-characters: an event-related potential study.

Most Chinese characters are composed of a semantic radical on the left and a phonetic radical on the right. The semantic radical provides the semantic information; the phonetic radical provides information concerning the pronunciation of the whole character. The pseudo-characters in the study consisted of different sub-lexical parts of real Chinese characters and consequently they also had the semantic radical and the phonetic radical. But they were not readable and had no actual meaning. In order to investigate the spatiotemporal cortical activation patterns underlying the orthographic, phono

Whose loss is it? Human electrophysiological correlates of non-self reward processing.

To recognize whether another person's action results in a good or bad outcome is imperative for social learning, as well as for understanding the behavior of others in a broad context. Recent studies have reported that a scalp-surface event-related potential (ERP) called medial-frontal negativity (MFN), considered to be an index of negative reward processing, is generated when perceiving not only one's own losses, but also those of others. This suggests that the same neural mechanisms operate in monitoring one's own actions and in perceiving the consequences of the actions of others. To furthe

Error processing in major depressive disorder: evidence from event-related potentials.

In a previous study we showed that errors following errors activate a strategic (prefrontal) mechanism. In an error trial (trial n) following an erroneous previous trial (trial n - 1) healthy control subjects were found to have enlarged (more negative) amplitudes of the error related negativity (ERN)/error negativity (Ne), an electrophysiological correlate of response monitoring, in response to a negative feedback signal. Contrary to that, patients with major depressive disorder showed smaller (less negative) ERN/Ne amplitudes. It has been discussed controversially whether errors of choice (e.

Error-processing deficits in patients with cocaine dependence.

Cocaine abuse and addiction can be characterized by a persisting use of cocaine in the face of adverse consequences. In the present study we focus on one specific element of adverse consequences: the making of errors. The aim of this study was to determine whether cocaine-dependent persons have error-processing deficits as measured using error-related negativity (ERN) and error positivity (Pe). Event-related potentials (ERPs) during an Eriksen flanker task were recorded from cocaine-dependent patients and a control group. Cocaine-addicted patients showed reduced ERN and Pe components as compar

Endogenous event-related potentials in acupuncture clinical research: A critical narrative review.

Acupuncture lacks well-established electrophysiological indicators for objective efficacy evaluation. Endogenous event-related potentials (ERPs), with their millisecond temporal resolution, offer a unique window into the modulatory effects of acupuncture on cognitive and emotional processing. This review summarizes studies conducted over the past decade that have utilized endogenous components such as P300, mismatch negativity, and contingent negative variation to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture. It covers two major fields, cognitive disorders and neuropsychiatric diseases, and includes s
