Intrauterine device use in adolescence: a narrative review.

Contraceptive use in adolescence remains a challenging issue. Adolescents are at high risk of unintended pregnancies and sexual transmitted infections. During the past few decades intrauterine devices are recommended from global health organization, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and World Health Organization as a method of contraception for adolescents. Intrauterine devices are part of the long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and include the copper bearing device (CU-IUD) and the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LN

A rise in births following contraceptive failure in France between 2010 and 2016: results from the French national perinatal surveys.

BACKGROUND: In France, while the prevalence of contraception is high, a significant proportion of pregnancies are unintended. Following the 2012 pill scare, the contraceptive method mix, which was mostly comprised of pills and intrauterine devices (IUD), has become more diversified. In this changing landscape, our objective was to describe trends in live births resulting from contraceptive failure and evaluate how patterns of contraceptive use have contributed to observed changes between 2010 and 2016. METHODS: We used data from the 2010 and the 2016 French National Perinatal surveys which in

Contraceptive practices in Armenia: Panel evaluation of an Information-Education-Communication Campaign.

Induced abortion remains the major form of birth control among Armenian women, contributing to their excess mortality and preventable morbidity. Reliance on abortion is attributed to limited access to information concerning modern methods of contraception and to widely held misinformation among women regarding family planning and reproductive health. Based on the Steps to Behavior Change model, the Green Path Campaign for Family Health, an information-education-communication (IEC) campaign, was launched in June 2000. This multimedia campaign promoted greater awareness, knowledge, acceptance, a

Abortion in single girls in Hong Kong.

Abortion in single girls in an increasing problem in Hong Kong. This paper is an attempt to look at the psychosocial factors in sexual behavior in a selected sample of girls. Of 100 girls requesting an abortion, 70% were educated to Form III level (grade 10 U.S. equivalent) and these did not come from broken or disturbed homes. The adequacy of their prepregnancy use of contraception was significantly and positively related to their level of formal education. These girls were all made pregnant by their boy-friends. Some aspects of their sexual behavior are described.

Demographic and Fertility Characteristics of Contraceptive Clusters in Burundi.

Examining women's reproductive experiences over time reveals a more dynamic view of women's behaviors and needs than current status measures alone. This study uses sequence and cluster analyses, which are designed for identifying patterns and subgroups in longitudinal data. We apply these methods to contraceptive calendar data in Burundi to identify discrete clusters of women based on contraceptive and pregnancy behaviors over the past 5 years. We identify six unique clusters; three characterized by no use of contraception (85 percent of women) and three by use (16 percent). The Quiet Calendar

The mediating role of partner communication on contraceptive use among adolescent girls and young women participating in a small-group intervention in Malawi: A longitudinal analysis.

Though effective reproductive health interventions have been developed for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa, few have explored whether specific components of the interventions are responsible for observed changes in behaviour. Data for this longitudinal mediation analysis come from a quasi-experimental, sexual and reproductive health study conducted among AGYW (age 15-24) in Malawi. We assessed the extent to which the relationship between attending communication-specific small-group sessions and contraceptive use at one-year was mediated by contraceptive communicat

[Contraception in Austria].

952 sexual active women between 15 and 44 years were investigated for their contraceptive behaviour. In 42% the pill was the first choice followed by the condom in 16%. 18% of all sexual active women in this age group did not use any contraceptives. Therefore the rate of unplanned pregnancies was very high: 34% reported about such unplanned pregnancies in their history. The main sources for informations in contraception are the gynecologist and the partner, but not the parents or the newspapers. Nearly half of all women did not know how the pill really works and quite a lot has still the opini

Condom practices of urban teens using Norplant contraceptive implants, oral contraceptives, and condoms for contraception.

OBJECTIVES: The availability of long-acting hormonal birth control methods has created new contraceptive options for adolescents. The purpose of this study was to determine whether teens initiating these methods use condoms less frequently than teens using oral contraceptive pills or condoms alone and may therefore be at an increased risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections. STUDY DESIGN: To investigate ongoing condom behavior in teens using levonorgestrel (Norplant) contraceptive implants, oral contraceptives, and condoms alone, we examined data from a 2-year prospective cohort stud

Beliefs related to the use of oral contraceptives by African American women, ages 18-35.

This study looked at modal, salient beliefs regarding intention to use and use of oral contraceptives (OC) in a group of African American women aged 18-35 in a midwest urban community. Data were collected in face-to-face audio taped interviews using a format devised by Ajzen and Fishbein. Questions related to the identified behavior of deliberate action to avoid unwanted pregnancy by instituting the use of a contraceptive method. Twenty-five women consented to participate. Of these, 20 women (80%) reported using oral contraceptives as their primary birth control method. The study reports on wo

Use and knowledge of contraceptive methods by patients in two substance use disorders treatment centers in Paris.

BACKGROUND: Studies on contraceptive use by patients with substance use disorders (SUD) show a concerning low use of contraception. Mainly conducted in USA, they could be irrelevant to patients attending European SUD treatment centers, especially since these studies mostly investigate women suffering from social exclusion, severe material deprivation andopiates use with frequent high-risk drug use and sexual behaviors including sex trade, frequently not currently attending treatment centers. The purpose of this study is to describe contraceptive use by patients, both male and female, since con

A survey of bonobo (Pan paniscus) oral contraceptive pill use in North American zoos.

Contraception is an essential tool in reproductive management of captive species. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Reproductive Management Center (RMC) gathers data on contraception use and provides recommendations. Although apes have been given oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) for at least 30 years, there have been no published reports with basic information on why the pill is administered, formulations and brands used, and effects on physiology and behavior. Here, we report survey results characterizing OCP use in bonobos (Pan paniscus) housed in North American zoos, as well as inf
