Pharmacy-based interventions for initiating effective contraception following the use of emergency contraception: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: In Scotland most women get emergency contraception (EC) from pharmacies. Pharmacists currently cannot provide effective ongoing contraception after EC. In this pilot study, we aimed to determine the feasibility of a larger study designed to ascertain if pharmacy-based interventions can increase the uptake of effective contraception after EC. STUDY DESIGN: This is a pilot study of women presenting for levonorgestrel EC to community pharmacies in Edinburgh, UK, in 2012. Pharmacies were cluster randomized to provide either standard care or one of two interventions: (a) one packet of

Metabolic effects of the contraceptive skin patch and subdermal contraceptive implant in Mexican women: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The contraceptive skin patch (CSP) accepted by the U.S. FDA in 2001 includes ethinylestradiol and norelgestromine, whereas the subdermal contraceptive implant (SCI) has etonogestrel and is also approved by the FDA. In Mexico, both are now widely used for contraception but their effects on Mexican population are unknown. The objective of the study was to evaluate if these treatments induce metabolic changes in a sample of indigenous and mestizo Mexican women. METHODS: An observational, prospective, longitudinal, non-randomized study of women between 18 and 35 years of age assigned

Extended regimens of the contraceptive vaginal ring versus hormonal oral contraceptives: effects on lipid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Combined oral contraceptives used in an extended regimen have been studied because of their potential benefits; however, there have been few publications on extended regimens of contraceptive vaginal rings. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of these two extended regimens on the lipid metabolism of women using these contraceptive methods during 1 year. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective study enrolled 150 women: 75 used a vaginal contraceptive ring (11.7 mg etonogestrel and 2.7 mg ethinyl estradiol), and 75 used oral contraceptives (30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 150 mg des

Contraception by Ushercell (cellulose sulfate) in formulation: duration of effect and dose effectiveness.

This study evaluated contraception by formulated Ushercell, a uniquely high-molecular-weight form of cellulose sulfate, in the rabbit. Variables included (1) dose effectiveness, (2) duration of effectiveness, and (3) formulation excipients. Vaginally applied carboxymethyl-cellulose-based Ushercell gel is contraceptive. A 6% gel is active for at least 18 h; partial activity is observed for at least 24 h. With an application-insemination interval of 0.5 h, Ushercell as low as 0.1% is contraceptive. Contraception is incomplete with 2% Ushercell and an application-insemination interval of 24 h. Us

[Effects and side effects of hormonal contraceptives in the region of the nose, throat, and ear].

The pathomechanism of diseases in the field of oto-rhino-laryngology caused by an hormonal contraceptive therapy are presented on base of a critical literature survey. Complications of oral contraception are proved only for the oral tissue (hyperplastic gingivitis) the larynx and the eustachian tube. Otological (otosclerosis, acute deafness, slowly progressive deafness) and rhinological diseases (Rhinopathia vasomotorica) in women under oral contraception cannot be attributed exclusively to this therapy.

Effects of the contraceptive patch, the vaginal ring and an oral contraceptive on APC resistance and SHBG: a cross-over study.

INTRODUCTION: The transdermal patch (20 microg ethinylestradiol+150 microg norelgestromin daily) and the vaginal ring (15 microg ethinylestradiol+120 microg etonogestrel daily) are new contraceptives, designed to deliver a low dose of hormones, suggesting a low exposure. However, few data are available about their risk of venous thrombosis. The objective was to investigate the effect of the patch, the ring, and an oral contraceptive (30 microg ethinylestradiol+150 microg levonorgestrel daily) on activated protein C sensitivity ratio (APC-sr) and on sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels in

Should female relatives of factor V Leiden carriers be screened prior to oral contraceptive use? A cost-effectiveness analysis.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is three-fold higher among FV Leiden (FVL) carriers receiving oral contraceptives (OCPs) than in the general population. FVL screening, however, is not routinely performed before prescribing OCP, and the cost-effectiveness of this strategy is unknown. A decision tree model was constructed to evaluate FVL screening and prophylactic anticoagulation (AC) strategies in female relatives of FVL carriers. In the model, AC was low molecular weight heparin, given warfarin embryopathy risks. VTE morbidity, mortality, and other clinical parameters were obtained from published
