Classic Chinese Acupuncture versus Different Types of Control Groups for the Treatment of Chronic Pain: Review of Randomized Controlled Trials (2000-2018).

OBJECTIVE: To review the effectiveness of classic Chinese acupuncture in the treatment of chronic pain by comparing treatment groups with different types of control groups in accordance with the newly published guidelines for systematic reviews. METHODS: We searched EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from 2000 to 2018. We included randomized controlled trials that included acupuncture as the sole treatment or as an adjunctive treatment for chronic pain. The outcome was pain intensity measured by the visual analogue scale (VAS), Western Ontario and

Use of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rh-BMP-2) in treatment of wrist and hand nonunion with comparison to historical control groups.

The purpose of this study is to report the percentage of patients achieving union, time to union, and complications with the use of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rh-BMP-2) in surgical repair of established nonunion in the hand and wrist. Twenty-seven patients with nonunion of the hand and wrist were treated between 2005 and 2011 with surgical repair and augmentation using 4.2 mg of rh-BMP-2. Sites of nonunion included the phalanx (seven), carpus (nine), distal radius (five), and distal ulna (six). Radiographic union and complications were the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively. Exploratory conversations with biodiversity-oriented civil society groups on the potential applications of gene drive-modified mosquitoes for malaria control in Tanzania.

Gene drive-modified mosquitoes (GDMMs) are gaining attention as sustainable tools to complement existing malaria control strategies. Their ability to self-propagate and spread through wild mosquito populations offers the promise of low-cost, long-lasting impact, but also raises ecological, ethical, and governance concerns. In this evolving debate, civil society organizations (CSOs) are pivotal actors in shaping dialogue, representing community concerns, and influencing policy decisions. This study examined the perspectives and recommendations of biodiversity-oriented CSOs on the governance, te

A meta-analysis of clinical studies conducted during the West Africa Ebola virus disease outbreak confirms the need for randomized control groups.

Recent Ebola virus disease outbreaks affirm the dire need for treatments with proven efficacy. Randomized controlled clinical trials remain the gold standard but, during disease outbreaks, may be difficult to conduct due to ethical concerns and challenging field conditions. In the absence of a randomized control group, statistical modeling to create a control group could be a possibility. Such a model-based reference control would only be credible if it had the same mortality risk as that of the experimental group in the absence of treatment. One way to test this counterfactual assumption is t

Predictability of quantification of beta-trace protein for diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid leak: cutoff determination in nasal fluids with two control groups.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak of the anterior skull base is an abnormal communication between the subarachnoid space and the nasal cavity or the paranasal sinus. Its presence increases the incidence of complications, as meningitis, with risk of sequelae. The early and correct diagnosis of the CSF leaks is important to perform surgical treatment as soon as possible. The CSF detection in nasal fluids could be made through the beta2-transferrin (beta2Tr) immunoelectrophoretic test, an expensive and cumbersome immunologic test, not available to the majority of the Brazilian hospitals.

Three years ago, a prospective, randomized, collaborative study investigating the effectiveness of vitrectomy for chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema in eyes with vitreous adherent to the cataract wound but without an intraocular lens was started. To date, the study consists of 130 eyes which have been assigned to three different groups. Without disturbing the data related to the question of the effectiveness of surgery, an analysis of patient histories and eye findings reveal interesting facts. The time between cataract surgery and onset of visual decrease was three months. Most of the eyes

Control Group Outcomes in Trials of Psilocybin, SSRIs, or Esketamine for Depression: A Meta-Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Psilocybin has demonstrated rapid and sustained antidepressant efficacy, with acute-phase effect sizes often more than double those for conventional antidepressants. However, concerns have been raised that high rates of functional unblinding in combination with trial participants with positive expectations of psychedelic use might bias treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes for patients receiving control treatments in randomized clinical trials of psilocybin for depression with control treatment outcomes from trials of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) an
