New-onset lung sarcoidosis, an adverse event by COVID-19 or a sign of convalescence; a case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease able to affect any organ within the body. Sarcoidosis may be the body's secondary response to COVID-19 infection and a sign of rehabilitation. Early response to the treatments reinforces this hypothesis. The majority of sarcoidosis patients require immunosuppressive therapies, including corticosteroids. ABSTRACT: Most studies so far have focused on the management of COVID-19 in patients suffering from sarcoidosis. Nevertheless, the current report aims to present a COVID-19-induced sarcoidosis case. Sarcoidosis is a systemic

Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis During Convalescence From Severe COVID-19 Treated With Oral Itraconazole: A Report of Two Cases.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) has been reported to occur secondary to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and the condition has been termed COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). We diagnosed two severe COVID-19 cases with multiple cavitary lung lesions and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) on days 58 and 48 of admission, respectively, with gradual improvement in the respiratory status. Both patients were positive for Aspergillus-precipitating antibodies (APAb). We chose oral itraconazole (ITCZ) for both patients because of its convenience in terms of long-term treat

Residual and Late Onset Symptoms Appeared in a Patient with Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia in a Convalescence Stage.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne infectious disease caused by Dabie bandavirus (formerly SFTS virus, SFTSV). Its manifestations during the convalescent phase have not been widely described. We report a patient presenting with hematospermia, fatigue, myalgia, alopecia, insomnia, and depression during the recovery phase of SFTS. Since these symptoms are widely observed in patients with viral hemorrhagic fevers, there might be common mechanisms between SFTS and other viral hemorrhagic fevers. Close monitoring may be required during the recovery phase of

[The bile cholate-cholesterol coefficient for assessing the causes of a protracted convalescence in patients with viral hepatitis].

Changes of the content of bile acids, cholate-cholesterol coefficient, bile acid fraction ratios in the bile were assessed in patients with viral hepatitis and chronic cholecystitis. A scheme is proposed for evaluation of bile bladder function considering four states: functional hypocholia, cholecystitis, threat of cholelithiasis. It is shown that in 23-28% protracted convalescence in viral hepatitis and manifested in prolonged blood serum ALAT activity is caused by the presence of subclinical form of cholecystitis.

Different immunological characteristics of asymptomatic and symptomatic COVID-19 patients without vaccination in the acute and convalescence stages.

The immune status of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in different stages of infection remains difficult to determine. In this study, we performed high-throughput single-cell mass cytometry on peripheral blood samples from 10 COVID-19 patients and four healthy donors to analyze their immune status at acute and convalescence phases. During the acute stage, the proportion of neutrophils increased significantly while natural killer (NK) cells decreased. In contrast, during the convalescence phase, the proportion of plasma cells decreased from the acute stage of disease onset and was l

Varicella-zoster Virus Reactivation with Severe Pneumonia Following Convalescence from Coronavirus Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

An association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and concomitant varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation has been proposed. We herein report a case of severe VZV pneumonia in a 73-year-old man who underwent corticosteroid tapering after recovering from COVID-19 and presented with fever, vesicular rashes, and hypoxemia. Chest computed tomography revealed ground-glass opacities (GGOs) and multiple granular shadows. Varicella-zoster virus was detected in the skin and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. The patient was diagnosed with disseminated VZV reactivation and thereafter successfully

Multi-omics identify falling LRRC15 as a COVID-19 severity marker and persistent pro-thrombotic signals in convalescence.

Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are at high risk of severe COVID-19. Here, we perform longitudinal blood sampling of ESKD haemodialysis patients with COVID-19, collecting samples pre-infection, serially during infection, and after clinical recovery. Using plasma proteomics, and RNA-sequencing and flow cytometry of immune cells, we identify transcriptomic and proteomic signatures of COVID-19 severity, and find distinct temporal molecular profiles in patients with severe disease. Supervised learning reveals that the plasma proteome is a superior indicator of clinical severity than

Acute peri-myocarditis with an unusual initial manifestation of gallbladder edema and a profound eosinophilic surge during convalescence.

A 29-year-old man with fever and right upper quadrant pain was referred to our hospital. Ultrasonography revealed intense gallbladder edema and pericardial effusion. Despite no symptoms and signs related to heart failure, the patient was clinically suspected of cardiac dysfunction related to acute peri-myocarditis based on his symptoms of preceding fever and headache, pericardial effusion, positive troponin T value, elevated B-type natriuretic peptide level, and sequential changes on electrocardiography. With a profound eosinophilic surge (8,022/µL) during convalescence, acute peri-myocarditis

[Vestibular symptoms and ENG findings during periods of convalescence after endolymphatic sac drainage and steroid-instillation surgery (EDSS)].

Understanding the appearance of vestibular symptoms during periods of convalescence after surgery for the treatment of Meniere's disease is important for determining when a patient can return to work as well as the long-term results of the operation. We have treated 20 cases of intractable Meniere's disease with endolymphatic sac drainage & steroid-instillation surgery (EDSS) [Kitahara T, et al., Ann Otol Rhlnol Laryngol in press, 2000] and observed the subjective symptoms and objective vestibular findings using electronystagmogram (ENG) during the subsequent period of convalescence. Neutrophil Activation and Immune Thrombosis Profiles Persist in Convalescent COVID-19.

PURPOSE: Following a severe COVID-19 infection, a proportion of individuals develop prolonged symptoms. We investigated the immunological dysfunction that underlies the persistence of symptoms months after the resolution of acute COVID-19. METHODS: We analyzed cytokines, cell phenotypes, SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific and neutralizing antibodies, and whole blood gene expression profiles in convalescent severe COVID-19 patients 1, 3, and 6 months following hospital discharge. RESULTS: We observed persistent abnormalities until month 6 marked by (i) high serum levels of monocyte/macrophage and endo

The association between sarcopenia and functional outcomes in patients undergoing convalescent rehabilitation.

Sarcopenia is widely believed to be linked to poorer outcomes in inpatient rehabilitation. This study aimed to assess the impact of sarcopenia on functional outcomes and dietary intake during hospitalization in adults undergoing convalescent rehabilitation. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis at a single rehabilitation institution. The Asian Working Group Consensus Criteria for Sarcopenia was used to diagnose. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score was used at hospital discharge to measure the primary functional outcome. Energy and protein intakes during hospitalization were

Acute Portal Vein Thrombosis during COVID-19 Convalescent Phase.

Acute portal vein thrombosis represents a less common type of venous thromboembolism, even among the prothrombotic complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Such complications are primarily reported during the active phase of infection. The case here describes acute portal vein thrombosis following resolution of COVID-19 in a 44-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal imaging identified portal and other splanchnic vein thromboses. Studies for hypercoagulable conditions were negative. Polymerase chain reaction was negative for severe acute respiratory syndrome cor
