Diagnostic pitfalls of ESA-resistant anemia due to functional copper deficiency in a dialysis patient: a myelodysplastic syndrome mimic.

Copper deficiency is a rare yet reversible cause of anemia and bone marrow dysplasia that can mimic myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), especially in patients on maintenance dialysis, who are at increased risk due to trace element losses, chronic inflammation, and impaired absorption. We report a 69-year-old woman on long-term hemodialysis with a history of partial gastrectomy who developed macrocytic anemia refractory to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). Bone marrow examination revealed erythroid dysplasia, hypocellularity, and ring sideroblasts. Although serum copper levels were initiall

Copper deficiency with cow's milk diet.

A 6-month-old full-term infant had severe anemia and neutropenia. The patient was being fed cow's milk and a diet of corn flour. Thorough investigation revealed low serum iron concentration, severe hypocupremia, low ceruloplasmin, retardation of bone age, and metaphysial irregularities and spurring. Bone marrow aspirate revealed cytoplasmic vacuolization in precursors of the erythroid and myeloid series and ringed sideroblasts. Therapy with oral iron, folic acid, and vitamin C was futile. Administration of copper sulfate resulted in brisk increase in neutrophils and reticulocytes. The child ma

Rationally Engineered CuSO4/TiO2 with Cl Desorption and Intermediate Rapid Oxidation Dual-Reaction Channels for Efficacious 1,2-Dichloroethane Deep Destruction.

Suppressing toxic polychlorinated byproducts during chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) destruction remains a critical challenge. Strengthening the Cl desorption and promoting rapid deep oxidation of reaction intermediates, thereby cutting off the interaction between Cl and reaction intermediates, is an effective strategy to prevent the formation of polychlorinated byproducts. Herein, a CuSO4/TiO2 catalyst with dual-reaction channels was developed for 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) oxidation, featuring S═O-H sites for Cl desorption and Cu-O-S sites for intermediate oxidation. It achieve

The impact of early-life exposure to three agrochemicals on survival, behavior, and gut microbiota of stingless bees (Partamona helleri).

Over the last few decades, agrochemicals have been partially associated with a global reduction in bees' population. Toxicological assessment is therefore crucial for understanding the overall agrochemical risks to stingless bees. Therefore, the lethal and sublethal effects of agrochemicals commonly used in crops (copper sulfate, glyphosate, and spinosad) on the behavior and gut microbiota of the stingless bee, Partamona helleri, were assessed using chronic exposure during the larval stage. When used at the field-recommended rates, both copper sulfate (200 µg of active ingredient/bee; a.i µg b

Discovery of Novel Small Molecule Growth Inhibitors to Manage Pseudomonas Leaf Spot Disease on Peppers (Capsicum sp.).

Pseudomonas leaf spot (PLS) disease in peppers caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) is an emerging seedborne phytopathogen. Pss infection can severely reduce the marketable yield of peppers in favorable environmental conditions and cause significant economic losses. The intensive use of copper-sulfate and streptomycin-sulfate to control PLS and other bacterial diseases is associated with antimicrobial-resistant Pss strains, making these control methods less effective. So, there is an urgent need to develop novel antimicrobials effective against Pss in peppers. Several studies, inc

The inhibitory effect of copper, zinc, and manganese on Legionella longbeachae and other Legionella spp. in vitro.

Legionella longbeachae is an important cause of Legionnaires' disease in Australasia and is associated with exposure to potting soils. Our aim was to identify ways to reduce the load of L. longbeachae in potting soils. Inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) of an all-purpose potting mix showed copper (Cu) concentrations (mg/kg) range from 15.8 to 23.6. Zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) were significantly higher than Cu ranging from 88.6-106 to 171-203, respectively. Minimal inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of 10 salts used in the horticultural industry were det

Cytochrome c oxidase, Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase, and ceruloplasmin activities in copper-deficient bovines.

The activity of several cuproenzymes in relation to the immune system was examined in serum and blood cells from bovines with molybdenum-induced copper deficiency. Five female cattle were given molybdenum (30 ppm) and sulfate (225 ppm) to induce experimental secondary copper deficiency. Ceruloplasmin activity was determined in serum. The Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase and cytochrome c oxidase activities were measured in peripheral blood lymphocytes, neutrophils, and monocyte-derived macrophages. Copper deficiency was confirmed from decreased serum copper levels and the animals with values less tha

Promotion of High-Speed Copper-Filling Performance for Interconnections with Increasing Aspect-Ratio Using Compound Additives.

Interconnections are essential for integrating the packaging substrate, and defect-free copper-filling can further improve the reliability in through holes (THs). The coating properties and filling processes are mainly dominated by the interplays among additives in the direct current electroplating. The acidic copper sulfate electroplating solution contained three typical convection-dependent additives and chloride ions (Cl-). The THs with aspect ratios (ARs) of 6.25, 5, and 4.17 (thickness of 500 μm) were selected as the study subjects. The effects of Cl- and ARs on the interactions among the

The Reductive Leaching of Chalcopyrite by Chromium(II) Chloride for the Rapid and Complete Extraction of Copper.

A hydrometallurgical process is developed to lower the costs of copper production and thereby sustain the use of copper throughout the global transition to renewable energy technologies. The unique feature of the hydrometallurgical process is the reductive treatment of chalcopyrite, which is in contrast to the oxidative treatment more commonly pursued in the literature. Chalcopyrite reduction by chromium(II) ion is described for the first time and superior kinetics are shown. At high concentrate loadings of 39, 78, and 117 g L-1 , chalcopyrite reacted completely within minutes at room temperat

Dose-response trial of prophylactic zinc supplements, with or without copper, in young Ecuadorian children at risk of zinc deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have shown the benefits of zinc supplementation among young children in high-risk populations. However, the optimal dose and safe upper level of zinc have not been determined. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to measure the effects of different doses of supplemental zinc on the plasma zinc concentration, morbidity, and growth of young children; to detect any adverse effects of 10 mg supplemental Zn on markers of copper or iron status; and to determine whether any adverse effects are alleviated by providing copper with zinc. DESIGN: This randomized, d

Stress induction affects copper and zinc balance in calves fed organic and inorganic copper and zinc sources.

This study determined whether Cu and Zn balance was affected by feeding either Zn methionine (ZnMet) + Cu lysine (CuLys) or Zn sulfate (ZnSO4) + Cu sulfate (CuSO4) before and after stressing calves. Eight Charolais crossbred steer calves weighting 167 +/- 5 kg were randomly assigned to two treatments in a crossover experimental design. The millet hay and soybean meal diet when supplemented with the inorganic salts provided 9.2 ppm of Cu and 36.6 ppm of Zn or when fortified with the metal complexes contained 10.5 ppm of Cu and 36.6 ppm of Zn. Gentled calves were fed their respective diets for 2

Activation of peroxymonosulfate system by copper-based catalyst for degradation of naproxen: Mechanisms and pathways.

Organic degradation by zero-valent metal (ZVM)-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems has drawn great attention in water treatment. Among various types of ZVM, zero-valent copper (ZVC) showed greatest activating capacity. However, the disadvantages of the released Cu2+ limit the practical utilization of ZVC. In this study, the activation capacity of four normal-sized copper catalysts, namely, copper sheet, graphene-copper sheet, copper foam, and graphene-copper foam, for PMS was investigated using Naproxen (NPX) as the probe compound. Results showed that the degradation efficiency of NPX in

Presumptive copper deficiency in hand-reared captive pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) fawns.

Presumptive copper deficiency was diagnosed in hand-reared captive pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) at the Los Angeles Zoo. Clinical signs, which were manifested in growing fawns, included anemia, anorexia, diarrhea, progressive paresis/recumbency, and aortic rupture. The range of serum copper concentrations in fawns born during the 1989 season (0.08-0.67 ppm) was below levels considered normal for domestic sheep and goats (0.7-2.0 ppm) and below concentrations measured in adult pronghorn (0.4-1.43 ppm). Copper sulfate supplementation of the hand-rearing formula, which was initiated in 1989,

Copper deficiency increases the virulence of amyocarditic and myocarditic strains of coxsackievirus B3 in mice.

Deficiency in several trace elements, including copper and selenium, is associated with increased levels of oxidative stress. Copper deficiency also has been shown to impair immune function. Previous work by others demonstrated that passage of an amyocarditic or myocarditic strain of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) through selenium- or vitamin E-deficient mice led to increased cardiac pathology. To determine whether a copper deficiency would similarly alter the pathogenesis of CVB3 infections, Swiss outbred dams and their litters were fed copper-deficient diets from birth and received either deionize

Toxic effects in Aphanomyces brasiliensis and zebrafish embryos caused by oomyceticides.

In fish farming, high losses occur during egg incubation and larviculture due to diseases caused by oomycetes. This study aimed to identify the oomycete species that occurs in zebrafish Danio rerio eggs and to evaluate the oomyceticidal effect of copper sulfate, bronopol and methylene blue on the mycelial growth of this organism, as well as to determine the lethal and sublethal toxicity of these compounds in embryos of D. rerio. The isolates were cultivated in yeast-starch medium to determine the concentration necessary to inhibit mycelial growth by 50% (IC50) and 100% (minimum oomyceticidal c

Differential bacteriophage mortality on exposure to copper.

Many studies report that copper can be used to control microbial growth, including that of viruses. We determined the rates of copper-mediated inactivation for a wide range of bacteriophages. We used two methods to test the effect of copper on bacteriophage survival. One method involved placing small volumes of bacteriophage lysate on copper and stainless steel coupons. Following exposure, metal coupons were rinsed with lysogeny broth, and the resulting fluid was serially diluted and plated on agar with the corresponding bacterial host. The second method involved adding copper sulfate (CuSO(4)

Flexible Textile Strain Sensor Based on Copper-Coated Lyocell Type Cellulose Fabric.

Integration of sensors in textile garments requires the development of flexible conductive structures. In this work, cellulose-based woven lyocell fabrics were coated with copper during an electroless step, produced at 0.0284 M copper sulfate pentahydrate, 0.079 M potassium hydrogen L-tartrate, and 0.94 M formaldehyde concentrations. High concentrations led to high homogeneous copper reaction rates and the heterogeneous copper deposition process was diffusion controlled. Thus, the rate of copper deposition did not increase on the cellulose surface. Conductivity of copper coatings was investiga

Copper.

Copper is an essential trace element, which is an important catalyst for heme synthesis and iron absorption. Following zinc and iron, copper is the third most abundant trace element in the body. Copper is a noble metal, like silver and gold. Useful industrial properties include high thermal and electrical conductivity, low corrosion, alloying ability, and malleability. Most of the metallic copper appears in electrical applications. Copper is a constituent of intrauterine contraceptive devices and the release of copper is necessary for their contraceptive effects. Copper reverses cardiomyocyte hypertrophy through vascular endothelial growth factor-mediated reduction in the cell size.

Previous studies have shown that dietary copper supplementation reversed heart hypertrophy induced by pressure overload in a mouse model. The present study was undertaken to understand the cellular basis of copper-induced regression of cardiac hypertrophy. Primary cultures of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were treated with phenylephrine (PE) at a final concentration of 100 microM in cultures for 48 h to induce cellular hypertrophy. The hypertrophied cardiomyocytes were exposed to copper sulfate at a final concentration of 5 microM in cultures for additional 24 h. This copper treatment reduced th

Graphene Oxide: A New Carrier for Slow Release of Plant Micronutrients.

The environmental problems and low efficiency associated with conventional fertilizers provides an impetus to develop advanced fertilizers with slower release and better performances. Here, we report of development of a new carrier platform based on graphene oxide (GO) sheets that can provide a high loading of plant micronutrients with controllable slow release. To prove this concept, two micronutrients, zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), were used to load on GO sheets and hence formulate GO-based micronutrients fertilizer. The chemical composition and successful loading of both nutrients on GO sheets
