This review article aims to guide the clinician in establishing a diagnosis in patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), presenting antenatally or postnatally. ACC may be isolated, or occur in association with other neuroanatomical lesions and/or congenital anomalies, and has many different genetic causes. Neuropsychological outcome varies considerably from normal to profound intellectual disability depending on the etiology. Approximately 25% of individuals with antenatally diagnosed apparently isolated ACC have intellectual disability. Subtle neurological, social, and learning def

OBJECTIVES: To examine and characterize the agenesis of the corpus calosum (ACC) in an epidemiological study of fetal autopsies, as well as, to analyze the associated anomalies and to emphasize the importance of the clinical examination of ACC.
METHODS: The subjects of observation are 20 fetuses from a total of 2238 autopsies carried out during a period of three years (2006-2009) in Tunis.
RESULTS: The associated abnormalities are hydrocephalus, cerebellar hypoplasia, agenesis of vermis cerebelli, polymicrogyria and lissencephaly. Sixteen of the cases (80%) are syndromic: Trisomy 13,18,21 (5

This report presents 4 subjects with congenital segmental callosal thickening, an uncommon malformation studied with MR imaging and DTI. Medical records were reviewed for genetic testing and neurodevelopmental status. Three subjects had profound developmental delay; 3 had seizures. MR imaging showed segmental thickening of the rostral and/or midcallosal body. Associated anomalies included polymicrogyria in 1 patient and optic hypoplasia in 1. DTI showed that the segmental thickening was due to anomalous longitudinal supracallosal fibers visually separable from the paired cingulum in 3 patients

In this Review, we aim to provide up-to-date and evidence-based answers to common questions regarding the diagnosis and prognosis of prenatally detected agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). A systematic literature search was performed to identify all reports of ACC and reference lists of articles were identified. ACC involves partial or complete absence of the main commissural pathway that connects the two cerebral hemispheres, and can be isolated (with no other abnormalities) or complex (coexisting with other abnormalities). It is a rare finding and the prevalence is difficult to estimate b

We describe a 24-year-old man with episodes of intense desire to sleep for periods ranging from 2min to 3h, episodes of generalized weakness and inability to speak without alteration of consciousness, frequent hypnagogic hallucinations during sleep and occasionally transient paralysis of limbs upon awakening. Brain MRI demonstrated elevation of the third ventricle, a characteristic lack of depiction of the corpus callosum and extension of the bihemispheric fissure to the third ventricle. We assume that structural changes of the base of frontal lobes, diencephalon and brainstem, can be accounta

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the natural history, associated abnormalities and outcome in fetuses diagnosed prenatally with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC).
METHODS: A retrospective study of all cases of prenatally detected ACC was performed in patients referred to two tertiary units between January 1993 and October 2003. Associated abnormalities, pregnancy outcome and infant follow-up were recorded.
RESULTS: ACC was diagnosed in 117 cases. In 82 (70%) cases this was associated with other fetal structural (n = 49) or chromosomal abnormalities (n = 33). ACC was classified as an isolated pr

We report a 15-year-old boy with autosomal recessive complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia with a thin corpus callosum (HSP-TCC). The involvement of the corpus callosum was characteristic with the genu and body predominantly affected with relative sparing of the splenium. HSP-TCC is being increasingly recognized over a wider geographical area than earlier believed. We now report a case of HSP-TCC from the Indian subcontinent.

Diffusion tensor imaging, a novel technique with an increased capability of detecting abnormalities in the white matter, has increasingly been employed in the study of the biology of addictions. A comprehensive search from a range of databases was conducted and publications on this topic were selected. Nine reports, eight published and one unpublished, met criteria for inclusion, five on alcoholism, three on cannabis and one on cocaine use. Findings of this review suggest focal disruption of commissural connectivity in the corpus callosum. In alcoholism, the genu and splenium were particularly

In this case report we describe a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum and asymmetric bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, who was found to have a bilateral inner ear dysplasia. Both of these anomalies have been associated with different members of the Pax gene family. However, to our knowledge this is the first report demonstrating the coexistence of these two unusual entities. By uncovering the inner ear malformation, we are able to better counsel this patient with regard to avoidance of high-risk activities such as contact sports and recommend prophylactic vaccination for meningiti

In this pictorial review, we illustrate acquired diseases or conditions of the corpus callosum that may be found by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain, including infarction, bleeding, diffuse axonal injury, multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, Marchiafava-Bignami disease, glioblastoma, gliomatosis cerebri, lymphoma, metastasis, germinoma, infections, metabolic diseases, transient splenial lesion, dilated Virchow-Robin spaces, wallerian degeneration after hemispheric damage and focal splenial gliosis. MR imaging is useful for the detection and differential diagnos

This study reports the clinical profile, etiologies identified, and outcomes for a consecutive series of children with partial or complete agenesis of the corpus callosum. Children with agenesis of the corpus callosum were identified in a comprehensive computerized database of all patients seen in a single pediatric neurology practice over an 11-year interval. Medical records were then systematically reviewed. Twenty-four children with agenesis of the corpus callosum were identified of a total of 6911 children in the database (0.35%). Fifteen were male (62.5%); 9 (37.5%) had presented antenata

The objective of this study was to examine whether abnormalities in corpus callosum morphology, previously reported in boys with Tourette syndrome (TS), were also present in girls with this disorder. Among the three groups of girls-TS, TS and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and controls-there were no significant differences in the size of the corpus callosum or any of five individual subregions. The findings suggest that abnormalities in corpus callosum morphology in TS are a gender-related phenomenon.

MRI was performed on 120 patients who sustained closed head injury of varying severity. Patients ranged in age from 4 to 87 years (average, 32 years). All patients had an initial MRI within 28 days (median 12 days) of injury. MRI disclosed areas of abnormal signals in the corpus callosum of 21 (18%) of the 120 patients; 1 (2%) of the 44 patients who sustained mild injuries (GCS > or = 13), 3 (10%) of the 31 moderate injuries (GCS 9-12), and 17 (38%) of the 45 severe injuries (GCS < or = 8) (p < 0.0001). All but 2 of the 21 patients with corpus callosum lesions had other parenchymal lesions tha

Agenesis of corpus callosum is an uncommon brain malformation that is usually detected in childhood. In adult, focal epileptic seizure is the most frequent manifestation. Otherwise, asymptomatic patients can be detected by cerebral imagery with specific criteria. Neither developmental disability nor interhemispheric transfer dysfunction are observed in those patients. Minor facial abnormalities can be found. Agenesis of corpus callosum in adult is usually paucisymptomatic. The prognosis depends on cerebral associated malformations which are involved in epilepsy and cognitive disturbances.
