[Synchronization of electrical field potentials in neocortex of rat after isolation of a cortex island in the contralateral brain hemisphere].

A correlation between the number of boutons and synchronization of electrical activity in two sites of the intact right somatosensory cortex of rats was anakyzed at different stages of axonal sprouting elicited by isolation of a cortex slab in the left cortex. Time delay between the development of epileptiform field potentials in two sites of intact cortex located at a distance of 4 mm from each other was determined as a parameter of synchronization. The analysis was carried out in 30 and 90 days after the complete isolation of the neural island in a symmetrical site of the contralateral corte

Intracerebral ERD/ERS in voluntary movement and in cognitive visuomotor task.

In order to study cerebral activity related to preparation and execution of movement, evoked and induced brain electrical activities were compared to each other and to fMRI results in voluntary self-paced movements. Also, the event-related desynchronization and synchronization (ERD/ERS) were studied in complex movements with various degrees of cognitive load. The Bereitschaftspotential (BP) and alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (16-24 Hz) ERD/ERS rhythms in self-paced simple movements were analyzed in 14 epilepsy surgery candidates. In previous studies, the cortical sources of BP were consistently disp

[The effect of vibration on the electrocorticographic shifts during the switching off of specific and nonspecific afferent systems of the brain].

Electrocorticograms of vibration induced effects were studied in intact and labyrinthectomized rabbits under midbrain reticular formation and renoreactive structures blockade. There was involvement of the specific (vestibular) and non-specific brain structures in the mechanisms underlying the cortex' electric activity. The article contains a review of the vibration-related shifts in the cortex, both specific and nonspecific--and in other afferent modalities (proprioceptive, somatic, visceral).

[Effect of the prolonged use of streptomycin as well as streptomycin in combination with tubazid on the bioelectrical activity of the brain in experimental tuberculosis].

The effect of streptomycin used alone and in combination with tubazid on the brain electric activity was studied in chronic experiments on rabbits with tuberculosis. The electrocorticographical investigations showed that the antibacterial treatment lowered the spontaneous electric activity and reactive capacity of the cortex. It was evident from a narrow amplitude of the main rythm, coefficient and energy of synchronization on rythmic photostimulation and paroxysmal activity withing the theta range. With the account of the high therapeutic effect of the antibacterial treatment evident from min

Shedding light on interictal epileptic spikes: An in vivo study using fast optical signal and electrocorticography.

OBJECTIVE: Interictal epileptic spikes (IESs), apart from being a key marker of epileptic neuronal networks, constitute a nice model of the widespread endogenous phenomenon of neuronal hypersynchronization. Many questions concerning the mechanisms that drive neurons to hypersynchronize remain unresolved, but synaptic as well as nonsynaptic events are likely to be involved. In this study, changes in optical properties of neural tissues were observed in rats with penicillin-induced IES using fast optical signal (FOS) concomitantly with electrocorticography (ECoG). METHODS: In this study, near-i

Developmental synergy between thalamic structure and interhemispheric connectivity in the visual system of preterm infants.

Thalamic structural co-variation with cortical regions has been demonstrated in preterm infants, but its relationship to cortical function and severity of non-cystic white matter injury (non-cystic WMI) is unclear. The relationship between thalamic morphology and both cortical network synchronization and cortical structural connectivity has not been established. We tested the hypothesis that in preterm neonates, thalamic volume would correlate with primary cortical visual function and microstructural integrity of cortico-cortical visual association pathways. A total of 80 term-equivalent prete

Auditory white noise exposure results in intrinsic cortical excitability changes.

Cortical excitability is commonly measured by applying magnetic stimulation in combination with measuring behavioral response. This measure has, however, some shortcomings including spatial limitation to the primary motor cortex and not accounting for intrinsic excitability fluctuations. Here, we use a measure for intrinsic excitability based on phase synchronization previously validated for epilepsy. We apply this measure in 30 healthy participants' magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings during the exposure of auditory white noise, a stimulus that has been suggested to modify cortical excita

Differential Effect of Dopamine D4 Receptor Activation on Low-Frequency Oscillations in the Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus May Bias the Bidirectional Prefrontal-Hippocampal Coupling.

Dopamine D4 receptor (D4R) mechanisms are implicated in psychiatric diseases characterized by cognitive deficits, including schizophrenia, ADHD, and autism. The cellular mechanisms are poorly understood, but impaired neuronal synchronization in cortical networks was proposed to contribute to these deficits. In animal experiments, D4R activation was shown to generate aberrant increased gamma oscillations and to reduce performance on cognitive tasks requiring functional prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HPC) networks. While fast oscillations in the gamma range are important for local sync

State-dependent spike and local field synchronization between motor cortex and substantia nigra in hemiparkinsonian rats.

Excessive beta frequency oscillatory and synchronized activity has been reported in the basal ganglia of parkinsonian patients and animal models of the disease. To gain insight into processes underlying this activity, this study explores relationships between oscillatory activity in motor cortex and basal ganglia output in behaving rats after dopamine cell lesion. During inattentive rest, 7 d after lesion, increases in motor cortex-substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) coherence emerged in the 8-25 Hz range, with significant increases in local field potential (LFP) power in SNpr but not moto

Translaminar synchronous neuronal activity is required for columnar synaptic strengthening in the mouse neocortex.

Synchronous neuronal activity is a hallmark of the developing mouse primary somatosensory cortex. While the patterns of synchronous neuronal activity in cortical layer 2/3 have been well described, the source of the robust layer 2/3 activity is still unknown. Using a novel microprism preparation and in vivo 2-photon imaging in neonatal mice, we show that synchronous neuronal activity is organized in barrel columns across layers. Monosynaptic rabies tracing and slice electrophysiology experiments reveal that layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons receive significant layer 5 inputs during the first postnat

Feasibility of Electroencephalography-Based Detection of Single-Flash Microperimetry Stimuli: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of detecting single-trial cortical responses to individual microperimetry (MP) stimuli using electroencephalography (EEG) under non-ideal synchronization conditions, and to explore EEG-based stimulus registration independent of patient responses. METHODS: This proof-of-concept study acquired EEG data from two healthy participants (12 trials) during MP testing using low- and high-intensity single-flash stimuli. Occipital EEG signals were recorded with an 8-channel portable system, band-pass filtered (4-49 Hz), normalized, and segmented into 600-ms epochs ti

Midfrontal theta as moderator between beta oscillations and precision control.

Control of movements using visual information is crucial for many daily activities, and such visuomotor control has been revealed to be supported by alpha and beta cortical oscillations. However, it has been remained to be unclear how midfrontal theta and occipital gamma oscillations, which are associated with high-level cognitive functions, would be involved in this process to facilitate performance. Here we addressed this fundamental open question in healthy young adults by measuring high-density cortical activity during a precision force-matching task. We manipulated the amount of error by

Frontal theta synchronization facilitates the updating of statistical regularities, evidenced by predictive eye movements.

Frontal midline theta oscillations are key neural markers for learning, set-shifting, and adaptive behavior, signaling cognitive control and the reorganization of neural representations. The present study explored how these oscillations mediate the extraction and updating of statistical regularities. We delivered 6-Hz in-phase or sham transcranial alternating current stimulation, synchronizing frontal midline theta during an eye-tracking probabilistic sequence learning task designed to test cognitive flexibility and assess changes in pre-stimulus gaze direction. A novel probabilistic sequence

Modulation of Long-Range Connectivity Patterns via Frequency-Specific Stimulation of Human Cortex.

There is increasing interest in how the phase of local oscillatory activity within a brain area determines the long-range functional connectivity of that area. For example, increasing convergent evidence from a range of methodologies suggests that beta (20 Hz) oscillations may play a vital role in the function of the motor system [1-5]. The "communication through coherence" hypothesis posits that the precise phase of coherent oscillations in network nodes is a determinant of successful communication between them [6, 7]. Here we set out to determine whether oscillatory activity in the beta band

Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Phase Synchronization as Assessed by Wavelet Phase Coherence Analysis of Prefrontal Tissue Oxyhemoglobin Signals.

PURPOSE: To reveal the physiological mechanism of the decline in cognitive function after sleep deprivation, a within-subject study was performed to assess sleep deprivation effects on phase synchronization, as revealed by wavelet phase coherence (WPCO) analysis of prefrontal tissue oxyhemoglobin signals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty subjects (10 male and 10 female, 25.5 ± 3.5 years old) were recruited to participate in two tests: one without sleep deprivation (group A) and the other with 24 h of sleep deprivation (group B). Before the test, each subject underwent a subjective evaluation usi

Excess of high frequency electroencephalogram oscillations in boys with autism.

BACKGROUND: An elevated excitation/inhibition ratio has been suggested as one mechanism underpinning autism. An imbalance between cortical excitation and inhibition may manifest itself in electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in the high frequency range. The aim of this study was to investigate whether beta and gamma range EEG abnormalities are characteristic for young boys with autism (BWA). METHODS: EEG was recorded during sustained visual attention in two independent samples of BWA from Moscow and Gothenburg, aged 3 to 8 years, and in age matched typically developing boys (TDB). High fr

Language disorder in schizophrenia as a developmental learning disorder.

Receptive language disorder in schizophrenia is hypothesized to represent a learning disorder that involves a neurodevelopmental etiology. It is argued that a preexisting developmental language disorder may characterize a subset of schizophrenia patients. A primary deficit in the temporal dynamics of brain function is assumed to cause receptive language disorder in schizophrenia. This hypothesized core deficit includes both disturbance in the processing of rapid, sequential information and disruptions to patterns of brain activation and synchronization. These timing deficits may alter the way

Primary and secondary bilateral synchrony in epilepsy: differentiation by estimation of interhemispheric small time differences during short spike-wave activity.

Estimation of interhemispheric small time differences (TDs) during spike-wave bursts in the EEG by coherence and phase analysis is useful for differentiation between primary bilateral synchrony (PBS) and secondary bilateral synchrony (SBS) in epilepsy. Because the previous method via Fast Fourier Transform needed long bursts for reliable analysis, a method using a 2-dimensional autoregressive model was newly developed to enable estimation of TDs even in 1.2 sec bursts, and applied to 19 epileptic patients with apparently bilaterally synchronous spike-wave bursts. At the onsets of bursts, estim
