[Acute myocardial infarction complicated with cardiac arrest successfully managed by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation combined with intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation: a case report].

Patients in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with serious complications such as malignant ventricular arrhythmia and cardiogenic shock couldn't receive emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures and had high perioperative mortality. A case of AMI patients who suffered cardiac arrest and long-term cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was admitted to the department of critical care medicine of the First People's Hospital of Foshan. With the assistance of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), PCI and intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP) were performed. ECMO and ve

Efficacy of Enhanced External Counterpulsation in Patients With Chronic Refractory Angina on Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Angina Class: An Updated Meta-Analysis.

A growing number of patients with chronic artery disease suffer from angina, despite the optimal medical management (ie, β-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and long-acting nitrates) and revascularization. Currently, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) therapy has been verified as a noninvasive, safe therapy for refractory angina. The study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of EECP in patients with chronic refractory angina according to Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) angina class. We identified systematic literature through MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Clinical Trials Regist

Impact of enhanced external counterpulsation treatment on cerebral blood flow and functional outcomes in ischemic stroke patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a noninvasive circulatory support device that has been shown to improve perfusion in cardiovascular diseases; however, its effectiveness in ischemic stroke is yet to be explored. This systematic review and meta-analysis were proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of EECP on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and other functional outcomes in ischemic stroke patients. PubMed, CNKI, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, Wangfang, Chinese Medicine and Sinomed databases were searched up to June 2025. Studies evaluating the effect of EECP on CBF, daily living activities

A case report of an unusual complication of Amanita phalloides poisoning: Development of cardiogenic shock and its successful treatment with intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation.

Amanita phalloides is responsible for the majority of the fatalities caused by mushroom poisoning. It causes damage in liver, kidneys and rarely pancreas, causing encephalopathic coma, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hemorrhage and hypovolemic shock. However, its effect on cardiac functions has not been established yet. In this case report, we aimed to present a female patient poisoned by A. phalloides mushroom complicated with multi-organ failure and cardiogenic shock due to advanced left ventricular systolic dysfunction. This case report was the first to show a successful treatment o

Intra-aortic balloon pump counterpulsation in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral vasospasm, and neurogenic stress cardiomyopathy. Case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The management of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) can be often complicated by the presence of stunned myocardium and left ventricular failure. Vasopressors and inotropes are commonly used to optimize mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation pump (IABP) may be indicated in the management of these patients. METHODS: We report the case of a 55-year-old patient who suffered an aSAH complicated by severe left ventricular failure, who subsequently developed symptomatic cerebra

Rescue peri-operative management of the patient with giant electrical storm and severe left ventricular dysfunction: support by levosimendan and intraaortic balloon counterpulsation.

We present a case of a 62-year-old male patient (coronary heart disease, and stenosis of aortic valve) with severe left ventricular dysfunction (left ventricular ejection fraction 20%, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter 80 mm, end-diastolic volume 329 ml) who developed giant electrical storm (on the whole 115 episodes of pulseless ventricular tachycardia treated by antiarrhythmics and electrical discharges) with low-elevation of cardiac biomarkers. The patient was referred to emergent cardiac surgery (double coronary bypass grafting, aortic valve replacement, and implantation of left vent

Enhanced external counterpulsation as treatment for chronic angina in patients with left ventricular dysfunction: a report from the International EECP Patient Registry (IEPR).

The International Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) Patient Registry tracks acute and long-term outcome for consecutive patients treated for chronic angina. Although EECP has previously been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for angina, little information is available on its use in patients with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. This report compares the acute outcome and 6-month follow-up for a group of patients with severe LV dysfunction and a group of patients without LV dysfunction. Of 1,402 patients in the registry recruited in 1998-1999 who had recorded values of LV ejec

Prognosis of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and treated with intra-aortic balloon pump counterpulsation prior to surgery: a long-term follow-up study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate short- and long-term outcome in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), who received an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) prior to surgery. Between January 1990 and June 2004, all patients (n=154) who received an IABP prior to on-pump CABG in our center were included. Patients received the IABP for vital indications (i.e. either unstable angina refractory to medical therapy or cardiogenic shock; group 1: n=99) or for prophylactic reasons (group 2: n=55). A Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify predictors of long-term all-ca

Comparison of the Hemodynamic Response to Intra-Aortic Balloon Counterpulsation in Patients With Cardiogenic Shock Resulting from Acute Myocardial Infarction Versus Acute Decompensated Heart Failure.

The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) neither benefits nor harms patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with cardiogenic shock (CS) but may stabilize those with chronic heart failure who decompensate into CS. We sought to compare its hemodynamic effects in these 2 populations. We performed a retrospective analysis of the hemodynamic effects of IABP for AMI or acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) patients with hemodynamic evidence of CS. The primary outcome was cardiac output (CO) change following insertion. In total, 205 patients were treated for CS resulting from AMI (73; 35.6%) o

Accelerated reperfusion of poorly perfused retinal areas in central retinal artery occlusion and branch retinal artery occlusion after a short treatment with enhanced external counterpulsation.

BACKGROUND: To date, no satisfactory therapy has become available for patients with acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) or branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO). Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a new noninvasive procedure that increases perfusion of inner organs. In the current study, the authors measured the impact of EECP on reperfusion in ischemic retinal tissue. METHODS: In a prospective, randomized study, 20 patients with CRAO or BRAO were included. Ten patients were given hemodilution therapy and 2 hours of EECP, and 10 patients were given regular hemodilution th

Synergistic effects of early sequential enhanced external counterpulsation and electric tilt table training on functional recovery in ischemic stroke: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of disability worldwide. Early rehabilitation is crucial for functional recovery. Electric tilt table (ETT) training improves motor and balance function and facilitates early mobilization in bedridden patients, but its use is often limited by orthostatic hypotension (OH). Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), a noninvasive circulatory support technique, has shown benefits in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases by improving vascular function and cardiac output. Given its hemodynamic effects, EECP may enhance tolerance to verticali

Enhanced external counterpulsation in patients with refractory angina pectoris: a pilot study with six months follow-up regarding physical capacity and health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Refractory angina pectoris (AP) is a persistent, painful condition characterized by angina caused by coronary insufficiency in the presence of coronary artery disease. It has been emphasized that there are possible underlying neuropathophysiological mechanisms for refractory AP but chronic ischemia is still considered to be the main problem. These patients suffer from severe AP and cannot be controlled by a combination of pharmacological therapies, angioplasty or coronary bypass surgery. AP has a negative impact on quality of life and daily life. Enhanced external counterpulsation

Six-Week Changes in Global Longitudinal Strain and Rehabilitation Outcomes After Enhanced External Counterpulsation Following PCI for Myocardial Infarction: An Analysis of a Pre-Existing Matched Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular pressure-strain loop (LV-PSL) analysis provides non-invasive myocardial-work indices by integrating strain with contemporaneous brachial systolic blood pressure. Follow-up myocardial-work assessment requires blood pressure measured at the same assessment. OBJECTIVE: To describe baseline myocardial mechanical abnormalities after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for myocardial infarction and to explore associations between a 6-week enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) program and changes in global longitudinal strain (GLS) and rehabilitation outcomes.
