[The normal cranial nerves in MRI. Description and visualization frequency].

In order to assess the value of MR in the depiction of intracranial nerves, we retrospectively reviewed 60 patients investigated over a period of 2 years. The aim of this study was: 1) to assess the score of MR in the detection of cranial nerves III to XII; 2) to determine accurate landmarks allowing for easy detection of those cranial nerves. Cranial nerves III, V, VII, VIII are well seen (70 to 100%), very often in both axial, sagittal and coronal sections. Nerves IX to XII are correctly studied only on axial planes [81 and 83%), but it is difficult to distinguish between the vagal nerve and

Transient GABA immunoreactivity in cranial nerves of the chick embryo.

The distribution and time course of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunoreactivity was investigated in the cranium of the chick embryo from 2 to 16 days of incubation (E2-16). A fraction of nerve fibers transiently stains GABA-positive in all cranial motor nerves and in the vestibular nerve. Cranial motor nerves stain GABA-positive from E4 to E11, including neuromuscular junctions at E8-11; labeled fibers are most frequent in the motor trigeminal root (E6-9.5). Substantial GABA staining is present from E4 to E10 in a subpopulation (1-2%) of vestibular ganglion cells. Their peripheral processe

The central-peripheral transitional regions of cranial nerves. Oculomotor nerve.

Oculomotor nerve rootlets varied more markedly in size and in transitional zone length and form than those of any other nerve studied to date. However, they could be classified into four main types, each of which was associated with a characteristic type of central-peripheral transitional zone. Type 1 rootlets emerged from the brainstem through a tongue-shaped elevation of the glia limitans. This type of central-peripheral transition is found elsewhere only in a minority of abducent rootlets (Fraher et al. 1988). Type 2 rootlets contained long segments made up entirely of central nervous tissu

[Nonaneurysmal vascular pressure lesions of the cranial nerves (author's transl)].

Four cases of facial spasm and 1 case of oculomotor paresis are described. The source of the disorder in all 5 cases is mostlikely not an aneurysm of the vessels of the base of the brain. The literature is discussed and thereby it is shown that mechanical disturbances of other cranial nerves (II, V, VI, IX, XII) can be caused by similar vascular (nonaneurysmal) abnormalities.

Virtual neuroendoscopy: MRI-based three-dimensional visualization of the cranial nerves in the posterior cranial fossa.

This article presents the advances of three-dimensional (3D) virtual neuroendoscopy of the cranial nerves (CN) in the posterior fossa. Interactive 3D visualizations were generated and the anatomical landmarks, such as the root entry/exit zones (REZ) and cisternal segments of the CN were evaluated. Twenty patients (M:F, 6:14) with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) underwent MRI constructive interference in steady state (MRI(CISS)) imaging and subsequent 3D visualization based on explicit segmentation of the MRI(CISS) data and interactive evaluation with direct volume rendering including implicit segmen

A case of multiple schwannomas of the trigeminal nerves, acoustic nerves, lower cranial nerves, brachial plexuses and spinal canal: schwannomatosis or neurofibromatosis?

In most cases, while schwannoma is sporadically manifested as a single benign neoplasm, the presence of multiple schwannomas in one patient is usually indicative of neurofibromatosis 2. However, several recent reports have suggested that schwannomatosis itself may also be a distinct clinical entity. This study examines an extremely rare case of probable schwannomatosis associated with intracranial, intraspinal and peripheral involvements. A 63-year-old woman presented with a seven-year history of palpable lumps on both sides of the supraclavicular area and hearing impairment in both ears. On p

[Transitory paralysis of cranial nerves IX, X and XII as well as the left VII after angiography. Contribution to the ischemic pathology of the cranial nerves].

The authors report the case of a 28 year old woman who presented, after cerebral angiography performed for a transient hemispheric ischemic attack, a regressive paralysis of the IXth, Xth and XIIth as well as the VIIth left cranial nerves. The involvement of these nerves and the sparing of the XIth is explained by the normal disposition of their arterial supply. Such paralysis has previously been encountered after therapeutic angiography. This case is compared to similar ones involving paralysis of the lower cranial nerves in general disease such as diabetes or apparently idiopathic as reporte

Electrophysiology of Cranial Nerve Testing: Auditory Nerve.

The electrocochleogram and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are electrophysiologic signals used to assess the auditory nerve. The electrocohleogram includes the cochlear microphonic, the cochlear summating potential, and the eighth nerve compound action potential. It is used predominantly for hearing assessment and for diagnosis of Ménière disease and auditory neuropathy. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials are used for hearing assessment, diagnosis of dysfunction within the cochlea, the auditory nerve, and the brainstem auditory pathways up to the level of the mesencephalon, and

Patterning of the cranial nerves in the chick embryo is dependent on cranial mesoderm and rhombomeric metamerism.

The vertebrate peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of two groups of nerves that have a metamerical series of proximal roots along the body axis: the branchial and spinal nerves. Spinal nerve metamerism is brought about by the presence of somites, while that of the branchial nerves is, in part, intrinsic to rhombomeres, the segmental compartments of the hind-brain. As the distribution pattern of neural crest cells prefigures the morphology of the PNS, we constructed tissue-recombinant chick embryos in order to determine factors that might regulate the crest cell distribution pattern. Descriptive epidemiology of primary tumors of the brain, cranial nerves and cranial meninges in Los Angeles County.

This report presents data on the distribution of 8,612 cases of primary tumors of the brain, cranial nerves and cranial meninges (both benign and malignant) diagnosed among residents of Los Angeles County from 1972 to 1985. Incidence rates of gliomas, meningiomas, nerve sheath tumors and all histologic types combined are presented for specific age, sex and ethnic groups. At all ages, the highest incidence is seen for gliomas among men. Meningioma rates are higher among women than men in every ethnic group. In both sexes, glioma rates are highest among whites, and meningioma rates are highest a

Neurovascular Compression Syndromes of Cranial Nerves: A Multidisciplinary Guide to Management.

Background: Neurovascular compression syndromes (NVCS) represent a spectrum of disabling neurologic disorders caused by vascular or structural compression of cranial nerves, most commonly at the root entry zone. Conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia (TN), hemifacial spasm (HFS), and glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GN) are associated with significant pain, functional impairment, and reduced quality of life. This review provides a multidisciplinary, anatomically grounded overview of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, imaging, and contemporary management strategies for NVCS. Methods: A narrative revie

Clinical and Radiologic Findings in Children with Anomalous Pontine Cranial Nerves.

We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiologic findings in 17 children with an aberrant cisternal cranial nerve 7 (CN7), and found that these patients had additional anomalies involving other pontine cranial nerves (CNs). The hallmark imaging feature identified in all patients was an aberrant cisternal segment of an enlarged-appearing CN7. The abnormal nerve coursed anteriorly toward the Gasserian ganglion, where it fanned out toward the internal auditory canal, Meckel cave, or both. This finding was accompanied by a small cisternal CN5, which often had a lateral bowed appearance. CN5

[Normal Anatomy of Cranial Nerves III-XII on Magnetic Resonance Imaging].

Because of the inherent complex anatomy and functional arrangement of the cranial nerves (CNs), neuroimaging of cranial neuropathy is challenging. With recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, the cause of cranial neuropathy can now be detected in many cases. As an active multidisciplinary team member of cranial neuropathy, it is essential for the neuroradiologist to be familiar with the detailed anatomy of the CNs on MRI. This review contains the basic MRI anatomy of CNs III-XII according to a segmental classification from the brain stem to the extracranial region. The

[Contributions of embryology and comparative anatomy for teaching of cranial nerves].

Some authors propose a global approach, including imaging, to describe cranial nerves from a clinical point of view. If we can agree to a certain extent with this proposal, we consider that the use of a medical point of view can neglect histological and embryological features which contribute to a better understanding of nerve function. For example, it is false to consider totally "nerves" I and II as "sensory cranial nerves". They are not true nerves, but derive manly from direct expansions of the central nervous system. They differ fundamentally from cranial nerves, except for the fibers pre
