Orthodontic treatment in children to prevent sleep-disordered breathing in adulthood.

The purpose of this article is to review human craniofacial growth and development, especially the growth of the mandible, to clarify the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome and craniofacial abnormality, and finally, to propose the hypothesis that negative pressure produced in the chest of the OSA child inhibits the growth of the mandible. Recently, the development of diagnosis and treatment of OSA syndrome has progressed rapidly; however, the prevention of OSA syndrome was merely seen. Craniofacial abnormality is reported as one of the causes of OSA syndrome. If cranio

FGFR1 Pfeiffer syndrome without craniosynostosis: an additional case report.

Pfeiffer syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition classically encompassing both craniosynostosis and digital abnormalities of the hands and feet. Individuals with Pfeiffer syndrome may have mutations within either fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 gene (FGFR1) or FGFR2. FGFR1 mutations often result in less severe craniofacial involvement and hand abnormalities. We report a four-generation family with an FGFR1 P252R mutation, who have typical hand and feet skeletal features of Pfeiffer syndrome without craniofacial involvement. This is the third family in the literature in which no family

Characteristic craniofacial defects associated with a novel USP9X truncation mutation.

Germline loss-of-function mutations in USP9X have been reported to cause a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies. Here, we report a Japanese girl with a novel heterozygous nonsense mutation in USP9X who exhibited intellectual disability with characteristic craniofacial abnormalities, including hypotelorism, brachycephaly, hypodontia, micrognathia, severe dental crowding, and an isolated submucous cleft palate. Our findings provide further evidence that disruptions in USP9X contribute to a broad range of congenital craniofacial abnormalities.

Craniofacial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies, and impaired intellectual development syndrome-1 in two new patients with the same homozygous TMCO1 variant and review of the literature.

Craniofacial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies, and impaired intellectual development syndrome-1 (CFSMR1; OMIM#213980) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the clinical triad of developmental delay and/or intellectual disability, a typical facial gestalt with brachycephaly, highly-arched bushy eyebrows, synophrys, hypertelorism, wide nasal bridge, and short nose, as well as multiple vertebrae and rib malformations, such as bifid and fused ribs and abnormal vertebral segmentation and fusion. Biallelic loss-of-function variants in TMCO1 cause CFSMR1. We report on two unrelated E

Cardiovascular anomalies in patients with Tessier syndrome: a systematic review.

Tessier clefts are skeletal and soft tissue abnormalities of a neonate's facial structures. They could be classified as syndromic and non-syndromic clefts, which can be attributed to disruptions in fetal development and genetic mutations, respectively. Reported cases of these clefts typically document the presence of additional abnormalities associated with these clefts. In this systematic review, we analyzed reports of Tessier clefts accompanied by cardiovascular anomalies, as one of the commonly encountered anomalies. We systematically searched PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, Web of Science, Scien

Van den Ende-Gupta syndrome: laryngeal abnormalities in two siblings.

In 1992, van den Ende et al. first reported an autosomal recessive multiple congenital anomaly syndrome characterized by blepharophimosis, arachnodactyly, and congenital contractures in a Brazilian girl born to consanguineous parents. Since then, nine total patients have been reported with van den Ende-Gupta syndrome (VDEGS), and the syndrome's phenotype has been found to also include additional dysmorphic facial features, palatal abnormalities, and slender skeletal features. We present two African-American sisters born to nonconsanguineous parents who have been diagnosed with VDEGS. Both sist

[A classification of cranio-facial syndromes].

How to manage craniofacial malformative cases? It seems to be very difficult, especially in orthodontics because of the lack of consensus. The authors' aim is to propose a physiopathologic classification of these craniofacial syndromes in order to simplify the medical practice when we meet these patients. More than fifty cases are actually treated and followed in our hospital; we have described all of these cases before to choose the most representative in each category. These syndromes are classified in four categories, organ abnormalities of one or many functional matrix, localized abnormali

A unique presentation of Crouzon-like syndrome: Complex craniosynostosis in the absence of genetic mutations or familial predisposition - A case report.

BACKGROUND: Crouzon syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature fusion of skull sutures during skull development, resulting in various craniofacial abnormalities and complex craniosynostosis is a condition in which more than one such sutures of the skull fuse prematurely. CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein, we present a case of a 5-year-old male diagnosed with Crouzon-like syndrome and complex craniosynostosis involving multiple cranial sutures, including metopic, sagittal, coronal (right and left), and lambdoid sutures, and without any identifiable mutations on karyotyping. Oral and Craniofacial Development and Immunology.

This chapter explores the intricate interplay between immune regulation and craniofacial development, emphasizing the critical role of the immune system in both normal and pathological conditions. The process of craniofacial development, from the formation of pharyngeal arches and facial prominences to palate formation, is outlined, highlighting the susceptibility of these structures to maternal immune disruptions.Key immune interactions at the maternal-fetal interface are discussed, focusing on immune tolerance mechanisms that safeguard the fetus from maternal immune rejection. Dysregulation

Human-like malformations in anole lizards: Potential cases of "hopeful monsters" resembling chameleon morphology.

Vertebrates exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, with the head representing an exceptionally complex anatomical structure shaped by adaptations to feeding ecology, brain size, and sensory organ specialization. Proper fusion of facial prominences and the coordinated growth of the skull and brain are essential for normal craniofacial development in vertebrates, including humans. Disruptions in these processes, whether due to gene mutations or external factors, can result in craniofacial malformations. In this study, we examined two pathological embryos of the brown anole, Anolis sagrei (I

Designing custom three-dimensional printed eyeglasses for children with frontonasal abnormalities: addressing challenges in access and fit.

Improving access to comfortable and well-fitting glasses for children with craniofacial differences may improve their visual outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe challenges in spectacle fitting facing patients with frontonasal dysplasia and to report successful methods for creating custom 3D designed glasses. Additionally, the process of systematically collecting and analyzing spectacle-fitting challenges can inform future processes of automated design of 3D printed glasses and can be applied to other specific craniofacial syndromes.

[Development and growth of the forehead].

Craniofacial development involves processes leading to the positioning and early growth of the frontal ossification centers. Growth then occurs, mostly secondary to the activity of the sutures, with major interactions with the functional environment, mostly consisting in the growing brain, based on mechanosensation and mechanotransduction mechanisms. Here, we review these processes and assess their relevance in the understanding of craniofacial malformations.

Surgical treatment of orbital hypertelorism: Historical evolution and development prospects.

Orbital hypertelorism (OR.H) is defined as an abnormal increase in the distance between the two orbits secondary to a skeletal anomaly, and it occurs in association with numerous congenital craniofacial malformations. Since its description by Greig in 1924, OR.H and the associated corrective procedures have captivated many surgeons. Here we present a discussion of the historical evolution of surgery for OR.H and highlight its future prospects. In the mid-twentieth century, only cover-up techniques simulating approximation of the eyes via an optical illusion were used, such as frontonasal skin

Brief communication: "Pathological" deformation in the skull of LB1, the type specimen of Homo floresiensis.

If the holotype of Homo floresiensis, LB1, suffered from a severe developmental pathology, this could undermine its status as the holotype of a new species. One of the proposed pathological indicators that still remains untested is asymmetric distortion in the skull of LB1 (Jacob et al.: Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 103 (2006) 13421-13426). Here, we present evidence that LB1 exhibits antemortem craniofacial deformities that are consistent with posterior deformational (positional) plagiocephaly. This is a relatively common condition in modern people with no serious associated health problems and does

Osteodistraction in the craniofacial region.

In the specific field of maxillofacial surgery, the use of osseous distraction is always more and more helpful not only in the rehabilitation of malformation pathologies, but also in the clinical situations that require bone deficit correction resulting from traumatic events and postsurgical effects, for example oncologic surgery. The reason for this versatility in the distraction protocols is, undoubtedly, due to the fact that, at present, they are valid surgical methods in alternative to or supporting maxillofacial surgery, since they are feasible from a very early age and they obtain a leve
