A Rise in Reactive Criminal Thinking Over the Course of a 10-Week Prison-Based Programme Predicts Increased Criminal Propensity: Testing the Exportation Hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The importation model holds that inmate behaviour is a function of behaviours and thought patterns offenders bring with them into prison from the community. It may also be that offenders export behaviours and thought patterns they develop or refine in prison when they return to the community. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to determine whether an increase in reactive criminal thinking in prisoners predicts recidivism following release. METHODS: A sample of 282 male prisoners housed in a medium security federal facility completed the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinki

The effects of essentialist thinking toward biosocial risk factors for criminality and types of offending on lay punishment support.

This research uses experimental methods to gauge how different facets of essentialist thinking toward (1) types of offending and (2) biosocial risk factors for criminality predict lay punishment support. A randomized between-subjects experiment using contrastive vignettes was conducted with members of the general public (N = 897). Overall, as hypothesized, aspects of essentialist thinking, particularly informativeness, continuity, immutability, and discreteness, toward both biosocial risk factors and types of offending behavior generally predicted more severe punishments surrounding retributio

Interpersonal Partner Relationships, Bonds to Children, and Informal Social Control among Persistent Male Offenders.

This qualitative study applied a life course framework to characterize the nature of interpersonal partner relationships of Mexican American young adult men affiliated with street gangs during their adolescence. Data come from a 15-year longitudinal mixed-method cohort study conducted in San Antonio, Texas. We analyzed semi-structured interviews conducted with a subsample (n = 40) during the course of three face-to-face sessions to explore the men's motivations, aspirations, and goals to lead conventional lives, despite their criminal justice involvement. Specifically, we focus on the complex

Patterns of family instability and crime: The association of timing of the family's disruption with subsequent adolescent and young adult criminality.

This study provides a longitudinal view of selected correlates of family disruption and suggests how they may contribute to adolescent and young adult criminal behavior. Data from a sample of 410 males, ages 19-21, who took part in an 18-year follow-up study of a Danish Prospective Perinatal Cohort, were used. Paternal crime, descriptions of the families'patterns of stability, and socioeconomic status changes over the life of the offspring were examined to determine their association with official records of adolescent and young adult crime. Analyses showed that divorce followed by a stable fa

Parent- and self-reported dimensions of oppositionality in youth: construct validity, concurrent validity, and the prediction of criminal outcomes in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Different dimensions of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) have been found as valid predictors of further mental health problems and antisocial behaviors in youth. The present study aimed at testing the construct, concurrent, and predictive validity of ODD dimensions derived from parent- and self-report measures. METHOD: Confirmatory factor analyses were performed to test a three-dimensional model (ODD-irritability, ODD-headstrong, and ODD-hurtful) and a two-dimensional model (ODD-irritability, ODD-headstrong/hurtful) based on items of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the

Genetic and contextual risks and developmental mechanisms underlying childhood aggression and young adult justice system involvement.

Aggressive behavior, shaped by genetics and environmental or contextual influences, is expressed differently across development and may lead to criminal justice involvement through arrests and incarceration for some individuals. This study examined the differential impacts of early childhood contextual risk and polygenic risk on a developmental cascade from middle childhood physical aggression and dysregulation to adolescent antisocial behavior, to criminal justice system involvement by age 19, and whether these risks were mitigated by random assignment to the Family Check-Up (FCU) prevention

The Impact of Criminal Justice Involvement and Housing Outcomes Among Homeless Persons with Co-occurring Disorders.

The relationship between criminal justice involvement and housing among homeless persons with co-occurring disorders was examined. Program participants assisted in moving to stable housing were interviewed at baseline, six months, and discharge. Those who remained homeless at follow-up and discharge had significantly more time in jail in the past month than those who were housed. However, criminal justice involvement was not significantly related to housing status at the six month follow-up or discharge. Findings suggest that housing people with complex behavioral health issues reduces the lik

Parental criminality and medical histories of delinquent children.

In clinical practice the authors observed that many of the delinquent children of psychiatrically impaired and/or criminal parents had remarkably adverse health histories. To test their clinical impression they systematically compared the medical histories of 20 delinquent children with criminal parents and 85 delinquent children with less obviously maladapted parents. They found a strong association between paternal criminality and serious medical problems in these delinquent children. On the basis of this finding the authors suggest that the behavioral manifestations resulting from such phys

Using clinical and criminal involvement factors to explain homelessness among clients of a psychiatric probation and parole service.

This study sought to examine the rate of homelessness and the extent to which lifetime homelessness was associated with clinical factors, such as diagnosis and treatment history; or criminal factors, such as criminal behavior and arrest history, among psychiatric probationers and parolees. Nearly half of the clients screened had experienced homelessness in their lifetime. In a logistic regression model to explain lifetime homelessness, significant factors were younger age, less education, a greater number of lifetime arrests, a schizophrenia diagnosis, and reporting both an alcohol and drug pr

Does age of onset of risk behaviors mediate the relationship between child abuse and neglect and outcomes in middle adulthood?

Child maltreatment has been linked with a number of risk behaviors that are associated with long-lasting maladaptive outcomes across multiple domains of functioning. This study examines whether the ages of onset of four risk behaviors-sexual intercourse, alcohol use, drug use, and criminal behavior-mediate the relationship between child maltreatment and outcomes in middle adulthood among a sample of court-documented victims of child abuse/neglect and matched controls (N = 1,196; 51.7% female; 66.2% White, 32.6% Black). Adult outcomes included employment status, welfare receipt, internalizing s

Sleep-related violence in parasomnias: Forensic and clinical insights for criminal responsibility assessments.

BACKGROUND: Parasomnias are undesirable physical events during sleep that can manifest as complex, violent behaviors, posing significant challenges for forensic psychiatry. The central legal dilemma involves "automatism," where actions lack the necessary mens rea for criminal liability. This study analyzes the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and adjudication of parasomnia defences within the Turkish legal system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using the nationwide archives of the Council of Forensic Medicine through the National Judicial Network Project dat

Relationships between attempted suicide, temperamental vulnerability, and violent criminality in a Swedish forensic psychiatric population.

The relationship between suicide attempts and different vulnerability factors was investigated in 61 male subjects during forensic psychiatric examination. Personality traits and psychopathy were determined by means of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) and the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R). Clinical diagnoses were determined by the use of Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID). Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was investigated in 58 subjects. Suicide attempters had extremely low socialization and high impulsive aggression. This was independent of a history

[Acting out as criminal impulse. History, Definitions, Forensic aspects].

The present article aims to conduct a comprehensive review of the existing scientific literature on this human behavioral modality, impulsive and transient, which escapes the conscious control of the subject, from a psychopathological and forensic approach. To achieve this, historical points about the different nuances of the topic will be made, supplying a panoramic and critical overview of it. It can be said that these are implicit memories about past traumatic situations that, because of a present reenactment of the unpleasant event through a dissociative mechanism, generate in the individu

At-risk behaviors with regard to HIV and addiction among women in prison.

The bulk of studies pertaining to addiction among delinquents have been conducted on male subjects. However, the few studies examining female inmates show that a significant proportion of them present an addictive disorder. Furthermore, the HIV infection rate is higher among these women than among incarcerated men. This study attempts to verify if women presenting a combination of criminal and addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of developing an earlier and a more severe delinquency than other delinquent women. Another goal is to determine whether women showing this comorbidity present a
