Impact of San Francisco's New Street crisis response Team on Service use among people experiencing homelessness with mental and substance use disorders: A mixed methods study protocol.

Mobile crisis services for people experiencing distress related to mental health or substance use are expanding rapidly across the US, yet there is little evidence to support these specific models of care. These new programs present a unique opportunity to expand the literature by utilizing implementation science methods to inform the future design of crisis systems. This mixed methods study will examine the effectiveness and acceptability of the Street Crisis Response Team (SCRT), a new 911-dispatched multidisciplinary mobile crisis intervention piloted in San Francisco, California. First, us

The crisis group--an outcome study.

The authors describe the day-to-day functioning and outcome of an 8-session, active, crisis-oriented outpatient psychotherapy group. Symptoms of anxiety and depression improved significantly in participants of the crisis group; these changes were even more positive at 1-year follow-up. The authors speculate that the success of the crisis group can be attributed to the felicitous characteristics of the patients and to the group structure and function, which provided an excellent vehicle for crisis intervention management.

Organisation and Practice of Crisis Resolution Teams in Adult Mental Health Services in Norway: A National Survey.

Crisis resolution teams (CRTs), which aim to reduce acute admissions to mental health inpatient units, have been the subject of studies on practice, effects and service user experiences. However, such studies involve a limited proportion of the CRTs. National surveys are necessary to understand the large-scale implementation of CRTs. The aims of this survey were to describe the organisation and practices of Norwegian CRTs as reported by team managers. An online questionnaire was sent to team managers of all 56 CRTs in mental health services for adults in Norway in 2013. The response rate was 1

Continuum of Crisis Care.

Nationwide Children's Hospital has built an integrated crisis continuum to meet the urgent mental and behavioral health needs of youth and families. Spanning telehealth, mobile response, outpatient stabilization, emergency psychiatric care, and intensive short-term treatment, this model reduces psychiatric boarding, improves access, and prioritizes family engagement. Supported by innovative funding and partnerships, the continuum leverages evidence-based practices and continuous quality improvement to address the ongoing youth mental health crisis and suicide risk in this population. Feasibility Trial of a Single Session of Crisis Response Planning for Youth at High Risk for Suicide.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents, yet access to mental health care remains limited. Youth have unique developmental and contextual considerations as they are avid users of digital technologies, which may influence how they engage with mental health interventions. Crisis Response Planning (CRP), a single-session intervention, has shown promise in adults but has not been systematically evaluated in youth. This study tested the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a chat-based version of CRP for adolescents with suicidal ideation (SI). Fifty-o

Improving the mother-infant relationship following postnatal depression: a randomised controlled trial of a brief intervention (HUGS).

Postnatal depression (PND) disrupts the crucial mother-infant relationship on which optimal child development depends. However, few well-evaluated, brief mother-infant interaction interventions exist. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate the effect of a 4-session, group-based mother-infant interaction intervention ('HUGS'), compared to a control playgroup, both following cognitive-behavioural therapy for PND, on mother-infant relationships and early child development. It was hypothesised that dyads receiving the HUGS intervention would show larger improvements than control

Crisis treatment of a preadolescent who accidentally killed his twin.

Justification and effectiveness of a multimodal approach to treating a preadolescent who accidentally killed his twin is presented and recommended as a model for treatment of similarly disturbed children. The interaction of dynamically oriented therapy, pharmacotherapy, conflict-resolution/problem-solving-skills training, biofeedback/desensitization, and family work is detailed.

"It's Hard to Show Empathy in a Text": Developing a Web-based Sexual Assault Hotline in a College Setting.

To increase access to counseling and advocacy services and respond to changes in communication preferences, many victim service programs are expanding their traditional telephone hotlines and adding web chat or text hotlines. However, there is little research available about these web and text-based hotlines. We examined program data collected in the first year of operation of a web-based crisis hotline for sexual assault survivors at a large Midwestern university in the United States as part of a larger evaluation project. We examined how often the web-based chat hotline was used and explored

Is it time for AI to take a leading role in mass trauma mental health response?

Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) offer opportunity and risk in mass trauma response, disasters and crisis. This narrative review synthesizes material from our "AI to the Rescue" panel at the inaugural PreAct Mass Trauma conference in June 2025, integrating relevant literature and the authors' expertise. We examine AI approaches beyond large language models (LLMs), including traditional ML and multimodal systems, while grounding the concept of "AI-made disasters" as a necessary third disaster type alongside Human-made and Natural, supported by emerging evidence of AI-cause

Physician-brief advice for promoting smoking cessation among cancer patients on treatment in low and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Physician-brief advice has been utilized in high-income countries to promote smoking cessation among cancer patients. Empirical evidence on its effectiveness among cancer patients in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is lacking. The gap could be due to inadequate training, and competing healthcare priorities, leading to insufficient implementation of targeted smoking cessation interventions in oncology settings. We undertook this scoping review to determine if physician-brief advice is effective in promoting smoking cessation among cancer patients in LMICs. METHODS: We con

Lessons denied: a history of therapeutic response to combat stress reaction during Israel's War of Independence (1948), the Sinai Campaign (1956) and the Six Day War (1967).

The current article examines the history of therapeutic response in the Israel Defense Forces toward combat stress reaction during two decades, and in the course of three wars: the 1948 War of Independence, the 1956 Sinai Campaign, and the 1967 Six Day War. Three independent sources were used: recorded debriefing materials; interviews conducted with therapists, commanders and military historians; and professional literature on the wars in Hebrew and other languages. The collected material is described and issues of attitudes, treatment approaches and preparedness are discussed.

Teen Line: a descriptive analysis of a peer telephone listening service.

Teen Line is a peer telephone listening service for adolescents. During its first year of operation, 2,270 phone calls were received. After an initial novelty effect, counts document a consistent level of use of the service. Two-thirds of the callers were female. Although 4% of topics discussed dealt with crisis situations (suicide, physical abuse), 96% were concerned with common, less urgent adolescent issues, such as peer relationships, family dynamics, and the need to have someone "just to talk to." This paper presents a model for an adolescent listening service and provides data garnered o

Lessons from +LOVE, Improving HIV Care for Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in New Orleans Using an Integrated Behavioral Health Crisis Support Model of Care.

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) experience higher rates of HIV infection than other groups. They also face disparities in linkage and retention to HIV care, as well as in viral suppression. To address the needs of the BMSM population living with HIV, we developed a novel intervention program (+LOVE), which integrated case management with behavioral health/crisis support. The intervention consisted of (1) a dedicated therapist; (2) an SMS (text message)-based engagement program, CareSignal that provided medication reminders and administered routine ecological momentary assessments (EMAs)

[Are mental health disorders' characteristics such as presence and severity related to the nature of a crisis, its dangerousness and the types of services offered?].

UNLABELLED: The mandate of crisis centres varies substantially from one country to the next according to the government policies in effect. In the United States, crisis centres were developed based on Caplan's theory, which defines crisis as a psychosocial disorganization following a life event that is resolved with a return to balance. This approach aims at preventing the onset of mental health disorders through short-term intervention. It is different in Quebec, where crisis centres were developed in a deinstitutionalization context and ought to constitute an alternative to hospitalisation.

[DemStepCare: Risk-stratified support for outpatient dementia care - Evaluation from the perspective of relatives].

Dementia care has several shortcomings: lack of guideline based early diagnoses and interventions concerning effective outpatient crisis intervention, regional multiprofessional networking and care givers support. To meet these challenges, the DemStepCare project is composed of a need-driven, staged treatment approach. GPs and case managers direct a regional dementia care network to provide counseling, case management, out-patient crisis intervention and care givers support. Qualitative survey results of the care giver perspective show positive aspects and further potential for improvement of

The making of public health emergencies: West Nile virus in New York City.

In this article we use the case of the West Nile virus (WNV) to investigate the social construction of public health emergencies (PHEs) and the subsequent changes in public health governance that they instigate. Informed by medical sociological literature on the social construction of illness, science and technology studies, and risk and disaster literature, we create a conceptual framework for connecting health and crisis. Our investigation of the WNV analyses PHEs as brief, but vitally important, moments in which a 'crisis' is co-constructed between states, affected populations and disease v
