Diversity and antibiograms of bacteria isolated from cutaneous leishmaniasis wounds in the Nkwanta South District of Ghana.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite. The presence of secondary bacterial infections in cutaneous leishmaniasis wounds exacerbate lesion development and could lead to delay in the healing process. This study sought to determine the resistance patterns of bacteria co-infecting cutaneous leishmaniasis wounds from selected communities in the Nkwanta district. Various bacteria were isolated and characterized from exudates obtained from wound swabs collected with sterile cotton tipped applicators. Confirmation of bacterial identity was done using the

When ST Elevation Is Not STEMI: Autonomic-Mediated Repolarization Abnormalities After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a neurological emergency accounting for 5% of all strokes, with mortality exceeding 50% in patients over 80 years of age. Aneurysmal SAH is particularly lethal in the elderly due to atypical presentations, including ECG abnormalities mimicking acute coronary syndromes, leading to delayed diagnosis and high complication rates. This case report highlights the diagnostic pitfalls of SAH-induced STEMI mimicry. CASE REPORT A in their 90s White woman with a remote history of diabetes presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with sudden-onset occipital he

Antibiotic administration exacerbates acute graft vs. host disease-induced bone marrow and spleen damage in lymphopenic mice.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potential cure for certain life-threatening malignant and nonmalignant diseases. However, experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that pre-transplant myeloablative conditioning damages the gut leading to translocation of intestinal bacteria and the development of acute graft vs. host disease (aGVHD). The overall objective of this study was to determine whether administration of broad spectrum antibiotics (Abx) affects the onset and/or severity of aGVHD in lymphopenic mice that were not subjected to toxic, pre-transplant condi

Microbiological safety and antimicrobial resistance in cashew-based plant-based cheese analogues.

The demand for plant-based cheese analogues has increased in recent years, driven both by the growing adoption of vegan and vegetarian diets and by consumers seeking plant-based alternatives to animal-derived products. Their production relies on diverse raw materials and often incorporates fermentation processes involving molds, yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Within this context, ensuring food safety, including the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) aspects, is essential due to the complex microbial communities involved in fermentation. Therefore, this study investigated the presence of b

Sensitive Detection of Staphylococcus aureus with Vancomycin-Conjugated Magnetic Beads as Enrichment Carriers Combined with Flow Cytometry.

A novel sandwich strategy was designed to detect Staphylococcus aureus. The strategy is based on an antibacterial agent that captures bacterial cells and a fluorescein-labeled antibody that acts as the signal-output probe. Vancomycin (Van), which exerts a strong antibacterial effect on Gram-positive bacteria, was utilized as a molecular recognition agent to detect pathogenic bacteria. To effectively concentrate S. aureus, we used bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the amplification carrier to modify magnetic beads (MBs), which were then functionalized with Van. To improve the specificity of the met

Virulence studies of Enterobacter sakazakii isolates associated with a neonatal intensive care unit outbreak.

BACKGROUND: In 1994, an outbreak of Enterobacter sakazakii infections in France occurred in a neonatal intensive care unit during which 17 neonates were infected. More than half of the infected neonates had severe clinical symptoms; 7 cases of necrotising enterocolitis (one with abdominal perforation), one case of septicemia, and one case of meningitis. The other 8 neonates were shown to be colonized but remained asymptomatic. There were three deaths. Four distinguishable pulsotypes of E. sakazakii were isolated during the outbreak, and the deaths were attributable to one pulsotype. This paper

Gamma radiation sensitivity of Enterobacter sakazakii in dehydrated powdered infant formula.

The observed Enterobacter sakazakii D10-values for tryptic soy broth and dehydrated powdered infant formula were 0.27 +/- 0.05 and 0.76 +/- 0.08 kGy, respectively. A decrease of approximately 3 log in the dehydrated powdered infant formula was obtained by irradiation with 3.0 kGy or rehydration with hot water at 80 degrees C. No recoverable bacteria were found in the powdered infant formula irradiated at 5.0 kGy and stored, either before or after rehydration. A radiation dose of up to 5.0 kGy had no marked effect on the sensory properties of the dehydrated powdered infant formula after rehydra

Downstream community risks post dam-spillage flooding along the Volta River in Ghana: potential pathogens and public health implications.

Flooding compromises the microbiological quality of domestic and recreational water sources, increasing exposure to waterborne and opportunistic pathogens in affected communities. Following widespread flooding triggered by the September 2023 controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams in Ghana, which led to massive flooding, we assessed the microbial quality of water bodies in communities downstream of the Volta River and associated public and ecosystem health implications. In July 2024, water was collected from multiple source types across four downstream townships (Asutsuare, Aveyime,

Copper pyrazole addition regulates soil mineral nitrogen turnover by mediating microbial traits.

The huge amount of urea applied has necessitated best-developed practices to slow down the release of nitrogen (N) fertilizer while minimizing nitrate loss. However, the impact of nitrification inhibitors on mineral-N turnover and the associated microbial mechanisms at different stages remains unknown. A 60-day incubation experiment was conducted with four treatments: no fertilizer (CK), urea (U), urea with copper pyrazole (UC), and urea coated with copper pyrazole (SUC), to evaluate the changes about soil ammonia N ( N H 4 + -N) and nitrate N ( NO 3 - -N) levels as well as in soil microbia

The phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Enterobacter sakazakii strains from infant formula milk.

Enterobacter sakazakii is an emerging foodborne pathogen associated with severe diseases in neonates. Infant formula milk (IFM) has been identified as one of the major contaminated sources and a transmission vehicle. To determine the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of this pathogen, 22 E. sakazakii strains isolated from IFM by an FDA-recommended method and PCR on the alpha-glucosidase gene were subtyped by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR, and antibiotic resistance patterns. At a similarity threshold of 80%, 16 ER
