Foliar fungicides remain a cornerstone of disease management in modern crop production systems, yet their field performance can be inconsistent and difficult to predict. While fungicide efficacy is often attributed to product choice and application timing, environmental conditions may alter spray deposition, uptake, movement within plants, host physiology, and pathogen development. As agricultural systems face increasing climatic variability, understanding how environmental factors affect foliar fungicides is critical for reliable disease control and yield protection. This review examines the

Ensuring high crop productivity while reducing nutrient losses and environmental impacts remains a central challenge of modern fertilization strategies. Controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) have emerged as a key tool to synchronize nutrient availability with plant demand by embedding soluble nutrient sources within coatings or matrices that modulate water penetration and ion diffusion. This narrative review synthesizes recent advances in CRF materials and technologies, with particular emphasis on biodegradable and bio-based systems, hydrogels, nanostructured carriers, and extrusion-based matr

Cercospora beticola, the causal agent of Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), is a major pathogen affecting beet (Beta vulgaris) worldwide. Rapid and accurate detection is critical for effective disease control. This study validated a diagnostic framework combining portable quantitative PCR (qPCR) and laboratory-based digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) assays to detect and quantify C. beticola in leaves, seeds, and soil-associated crop residues. We used two portable qPCR systems (Biomeme Franklin® Three9 and Hyris bCUBE™) for in-field diagnostics, and ddPCR (Bio-Rad Laboratories) for laboratory analysis. Two

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a polyphagous pest found throughout the United States, where it attacks many field and vegetable crops. Although H. zea has long been a traditional pest of sweet corn, its importance to this crop has increased dramatically over the past two decades. In this review, we summarize information critical for current and future management of H. zea in sweet corn production in the United States. First, we discuss the pest status of H. zea and its life history, including migration, infestation and larval development, diapause, overwintering, and abiotic fa

Synthetic chemical elicitors of plant defense have been touted as a powerful means for sustainable crop protection. Yet, they have never been successfully applied to control insect pests in the field. We developed a high-throughput chemical genetics screening system based on a herbivore-induced linalool synthase promoter fused to a β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter construct to test synthetic compounds for their potential to induce rice defenses. We identified 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), an auxin homolog and widely used herbicide in monocotyledonous crops, as a potent elicitor of rice

Birds are useful parameters in studying toxicological contamination of the environment. Birds can be heard and seen, breeding results and feeding patterns being recorded on a rather extensive scale in the Netherlands. Since 1974, a working party was constituted to study normal and abnormal death of birds. This group consists of members of ornithological and veterinary institutes as well as local field workers, bird revalidation centres and bird preservation and protection groups. In 1979, approximately 2,000 birds were available for post-mortem and bacteriological, virological and toxicologica

Pathogenic oomycetes can infect hundreds of crops, leading to significant economic losses globally. This study synthesized polyethylenimine-coated MXene quantum dots (PEI-MQDs) and investigated their antioomycete potential using the vegetable oomycete pathogen Phytophthora capsici as a model system. PEI-MQDs demonstrated potent antioomycete activity against P. capsici by damaging cellular structures and subverting asexual reproduction (zoosporangium/zoospore formation). Transcriptomic profiling demonstrated that treatment with PEI-MQDs induced extensive transcriptional changes in P. capsici ge

Continuous cropping obstacles constitute a major constraint on sustainable agricultural development, particularly in intensive cultivation of Panax notoginseng (Sanqi). Dazomet fumigation, an effective strategy for managing continuous cropping obstacles, has been widely adopted in practice. In this three-year field study, we systematically evaluated the effects of dazomet fumigation combined with black or white film on soil ecology and crop growth. The results showed that, compared with white film mulching, black film mulching after fumigation significantly accelerated dazomet degradation, sho

Soil salinization is a major abiotic stress limiting plant growth and crop productivity. MYB transcription factors play central roles in plant stress responses. Here, we investigated NtMYB78 using overexpression (OE) and knockout (KO) lines. Expression analysis revealed that NtMYB78 is strongly induced by salt stress. Phenotypic evaluation revealed that OE lines exhibited enhanced germination, biomass accumulation, and survival under salinity, whereas KO lines were highly sensitive. Physiological analyses indicated that NtMYB78 mitigates membrane damage and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumu

Plants can suppress the growth of other plants by modifying soil properties. These negative plant-soil feedbacks are often species-specific, suggesting that some plants possess resistance strategies. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated whether benzoxazinoids, a class of dominant secondary metabolites that are exuded into the soil by maize and other cereals, allow maize plants to cope with plant-soil feedbacks. We find that three out of five tested crop species reduce maize (Zea mays L.) performance via negative plant-soil feedbacks relative to the m

INTRODUCTION: Stalk rot caused by Fusarium graminearum (F. graminearum) poses a serious threat to maize production, further exacerbated by contamination with the mycotoxin deoxyninylenol (DON). Although selenium nanoparticle (SeNP) priming technology shows potential for enhancing crop resistance, the systematic regulatory mechanisms by which it reprograms plant defense responses against this pathogen remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms through which SeNP priming regulates transcriptional and metabolic reprogramming in maize seedlings to resist F.

The genus Pantoea forms a complex of more than 25 species, among which several cause diseases of various crop plants, including rice. Notably, strains of Pantoea ananatis and P. stewartii have been repeatedly reported to cause bacterial leaf blight of rice, whereas other authors have observed that P. agglomerans can also cause bacterial leaf blight of rice. The contribution of these and perhaps other species of Pantoea to plant diseases and yield losses of crop plants is currently not well documented, partly due to the lack of efficient diagnostic tools. Using 32 whole-genome sequences of the

The ongoing evolutionary struggle between crops and pathogens has highlighted the limitations of resistance gene (R gene)-based control, which often fails due to rapid pathogen adaptation. To address this, we must look beyond R genes and explore susceptibility genes (S genes) that pathogens take over during infection. Recent success stories suggest that S-gene manipulation can provide broad-spectrum resistance. However, moving this technology to the field requires careful balancing to ensure that plant fitness is not compromised. In this review, we focus on integrated multi-omics tools to iden

Plants sense a diverse array of small molecules and macromolecules derived from their natural environment, including diverse microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) that can trigger defense responses. Several MAMPs have been shown to prime plants for enhanced defense, providing extended protection against pathogens with minimal fitness costs. However, the extent to which conserved small molecule signatures of other phyla contribute to priming of plant defenses is unclear. Here, we demonstrate that exposure of seeds or plants to the ascaroside ascr#18, a pheromone secreted by plant-parasi

BACKGROUND: Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the fourth culture in the world and is widely used in the agri-food industries. They generate by-products in which α-chaconine and α-solanine, the two major solanidine-based glycoalkaloids of potato, are present. As secondary metabolites, they play an important role in the protection system of potato and are involved in plant protection against insects. To add value to these by-products, we described here new glycoalkaloids that could have phytosanitary properties.
RESULTS: Solanidine, as a renewable source, was modified with an azido linker and coupl

Plant roots are colonized by rhizobacteria, and these soil microorganisms can not only stimulate plant growth but also increase tolerance to stress through the production of volatile organic compounds. However, little is known about the effect that these plant beneficial volatiles may have on bacteria. In this study, the effects on growth and oxidative status of different concentrations of three volatiles already reported to have a positive influence on plant growth (2-butanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2,3-butanediol) were determined in A. thaliana and Rhizobium sp. strain E20-8 via airborne e

Microbial crop protection products based on Trichoderma have the ability to display multifunctional roles in plant protection, such as pathogen parasitism, enhance nutrient availability and stimulate plant growth, and these traits can be used to enhance the overall agronomic performance of a variety of crops. In the current study, we explored the multifunctional potential of two indigenous Brazilian strains of Trichoderma (T. asperelloides CMAA 1584 and T. lentiforme CMAA 1585) for their capability of controlling Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a key plant pathogen of cotton, and for their ability o

Several naturally occurring amino acid derivatives display significant activities against weeds, fungi and insects: some of them have been even commercialized and are applied as crop protection agents. The 53 most important amino acid natural products with such efficacy are presented in this review together with their natural source, mode of action and biological activity. The diversity of the manifold bacterial, fungal and plantal sources of these compounds is impressive as well as their completely different structural scaffolds, ranging from cyclopeptides via unique non-proteinogenic amino a
