Background and Objectives: Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is the standard treatment for progressive keratoconus, but delayed epithelial healing remains a concern, increasing infection risk and patient discomfort. Studies suggest that insulin may promote corneal epithelial cell migration and proliferation, potentially accelerating wound healing. Its benefit has been observed in neurotrophic keratitis and diabetic epithelial defects, and it may offer similar effects post-CXL. Our objective is to evaluate the effect of topical insulin on epithelial healing after CXL in a small case series. Materials

First introduced over 20 years ago as a treatment for progressive keratoconus, the original "Dresden" corneal cross-linking (CXL) protocol involved riboflavin saturation of the stroma, followed by 30 min of 3 mW/cm2-intensity ultraviolet-A (UV-A) irradiation. This procedure generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cross-link stromal molecules, thereby stiffening the cornea and counteracting the ectasia-induced weakening. Due to their large size, riboflavin molecules cannot readily pass through the corneal epithelial cell tight junctions; thus, epithelial debridement was performed. Moreover

Corneal cross-linking (CXL), a corneal strengthening procedure, is known to alter anterior stroma swelling behavior and is one of the treatment modalities of bullous keratopathy (BK). There are multiple studies published on the role of CXL in the treatment of BK. These articles had heterogeneous study population, different protocols used, and variable conclusions. This systematic review aimed to determine the role of CXL in the treatment of BK. The primary outcomes considered were changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) after 1, 3, and 6 months of CXL. The secondary outcome measures were ch

Keratoconus (KC) is a corneal anomaly that is manifested in a limited cone-like bulge with corneal thinning. Many molecules in the cornea change during the development of KC, including various components of the extracellular matrix, cytokines, cell connection, and cell adhesion-related proteins. Several treatment options are available, with corneal cross-linking (CXL) being the treatment of choice for early KC. However, postoperative complications have been reported in some CXL patients, mainly caused by corneal epithelial resection. Despite the fact that some novel approaches have helped to r

Here we report that chicken pineal membranes express high affinity receptors for Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP), as revealed by competitive displacement analysis of [3-iodotyrosyl-125I]-VIP by native VIP. These binding sites were further characterized by covalent cross-linking of radioiodinated VIP to chicken pineal cell membranes, using dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate) as a cross-linking reagent. Sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoresis after solubilization of the cross-linked membranes, reveals the existence of two polypeptides, P1 and P2, with a similar labelling intensity and apparent

Determination of the introduced moieties into derivatized proteins is an essential step in the preparation and quality control of chemically defined immunoconjugates. For the derivatized proteins using pyridyl disulfide-containing cross-linkers such as N-succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio)propionate (SPDP) and 4-succinimidyloxycarbonyl-alpha-methyl-alpha-(2-pyridyldithio)tolu ene (SMPT), the derivatization degree (ratio of pyridyl disulfide moieties to protein) has been traditionally determined by measuring the absorbance of both the derivatized protein and 2-thiopyridone (2-TP) released from the

INTRODUCTION: Collagen-based materials differ in absorption time, biodegradation patterns, and inflammatory cell infiltration. This study aimed to evaluate the biocompatibility and biodegradation of native, differently processed, and cross-linked porcine collagen membranes implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats, following ISO 10993-6:2016.
METHODS: Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: Group 1 (lyophilized 3 % porcine type I collagen membrane), Group 2 (lyophilized 3 % porcine type I collagen membrane, dehydrothermal [DHT]), Group 3 (1,4-butanediol diglycidyl

The B-cell antigen receptor (BCR) consists of cell surface IgM associated with the CD79 alpha/beta heterodimer. In this paper we describe a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) recognising the extracellular regions of human CD79 alpha and beta. FACS analysis demonstrated that the mAbs bind to a range of Burkitt's lymphoma lines, a mouse B-cell line (JO-72) transfected with human CD79 alpha and beta, and tumour biopsies from NHL patients. The specificity of the mAbs was confirmed by immunoprecipitation. The Ka for the binding of IgG from the anti-CD79 alpha mAbs to cell surface CD79 alpha on R

PURPOSE: To develop a simple corneal substitute from cross-linked collagen.
METHODS: Porcine type I collagen (10%; pH 5), was mixed with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The final homogenous solution was molded to corneal dimensions, cured, and then implanted into rabbits and minipigs by lamellar keratoplasty. The implants were followed for up to 6 months after surgery. Clinical examinations of the cornea included detailed slit lamp biomicroscopy, in vivo confocal microscopy, topography and esthesiometry for nerve function. Histopathologic ex

A new method for the preparation of ampicillin-BSA conjugate by a three step procedure was developed. The first step is the introduction of a maleimide residue to ampicillin by a cross-linking reagent, MBS. The second step is reductive cleavage of disulfide bonds in BSA. The third step is thioether formation between the introduced maleimide residues and the reduced thiol groups. The obtained ampicillin-BSA conjugated raised an anti-ampicillin serum in rabbits. A new reagent, MPGS, was used for enzyme labelling of ampicillin to avoid immunological cross reaction. Using the enzyme labelled ampic

PURPOSE: Corneal cross-linking (CXL) with riboflavin and UV-A induces several effects in the cornea, including biomechanical stiffening, generation of reactive oxygen species, and increased resistance to enzymatic digestion. Whereas the biomechanical stiffening effect is oxygen-dependent, little is known about the effect of oxygen on the resistance to enzymatic digestion. Here, we examined CXL-induced enzymatic resistance in the absence of oxygen.
METHODS: Ex vivo porcine corneas (n = 160) were assigned to 5 groups. Group 1 was the control group (abrasion and riboflavin application). Groups 2

An oligopeptide elicitor from Phytophthora megasperma f.sp. glycinea (Pep-13) that induces phytoalexin accumulation in cultured parsley cells was radioiodinated and chemically cross-linked to its binding site in microsomal and plasma membrane preparations with each of three homobifunctional reagents. Analysis by SDS/PAGE and autoradiography of solubilized membrane proteins demonstrated labeling of a 91-kDa protein, regardless of which reagent was used. Cross-linking of this protein was prevented by addition of excess unlabeled Pep-13. The competitor concentration found to half-maximally reduce
