Total Hip Arthroplasty in Patients Who Have Crowe Type IV Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the principal causes of secondary hip osteoarthritis, giving rise to considerable pain, impaired mobility, and a reduced quality of life. The optimal approach to managing individuals who have Crowe type IV DDH remains controversial. This study aimed to review the existing literature on the application of total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a treatment modality for Crowe type IV DDH, assessing its efficacy in addressing this severe hip deformity. METHODS: A comprehensive search across the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases id

Total Hip Arthroplasty in Patients with Crowe III/IV Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: Acetabular Morphology and Reconstruction Techniques.

The severe anatomic deformities render acetabular reconstruction as one of the greatest challenges in total hip arthroplasty (THA) for patients with Crowe III/IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Thorough understanding of acetabular morphology and bone defect is the basis of acetabular reconstruction techniques. Researchers have proposed either true acetabulum position reconstruction or high hip center (HHC) position reconstruction. The former can obtain the optimal hip biomechanics, including bulk femoral head autograft, acetabular medial wall displacement osteotomy, and acetabular co

Surgical Technique and Case Series of Total Hip Arthroplasty with the Hueter Anterior Approach for Crowe Type-IV Dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is being increasingly performed via the Hueter anterior approach (HAA), which has proven benefits with nondysplastic hips; however, little has been published on its outcomes with dysplastic hips, where it can provide better acetabular exposure. We describe our technique for THA via the HAA in hips with Crowe type-IV developmental dysplasia and report the mid-term outcomes of cases that were performed over 5 consecutive years. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated a continuous series of 8 hips (6 patients) with Crowe type-IV dysplasia; the patient ages

Challenges and Opportunities for Tribal Waters: Addressing Disparities in Safe Public Drinking Water on the Crow Reservation in Montana, USA.

Disparities in access to safe public drinking water are increasingly being recognized as contributing to health disparities and environmental injustice for vulnerable communities in the United States. As the Co-Directors of the Apsaálooke Water and Wastewater Authority (AWWWA) for the Crow Tribe, with our academic partners, we present here the multiple and complex challenges we have addressed in improving and maintaining tribal water and wastewater infrastructure, including the identification of diverse funding sources for infrastructure construction, the need for many kinds of specialized exp

Great spotted cuckoo nestlings have no antipredatory effect on magpie or carrion crow host nests in southern Spain.

Host defences against cuckoo parasitism and cuckoo trickeries to overcome them are a classic example of antagonistic coevolution. Recently it has been reported that this relationship may turn to be mutualistic in the case of the carrion crow (Corvus corone) and its brood parasite, the great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius), given that experimentally and naturally parasitized nests were depredated at a lower rate than non-parasitized nests. This result was interpreted as a consequence of the antipredatory properties of a fetid cloacal secretion produced by cuckoo nestlings, which presumably

Total hip arthroplasty with subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy for Crowe grade 4 dysplasia using the direct anterior approach.

Between September 2006 and June 2011, 1521 primary total hip arthroplasties were performed using the direct anterior approach on a standard surgical table. In 12 hips, subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy was required. Full weight bearing was allowed 1 week after surgery. The mean follow-up period was 3.7 years. All patients limped preoperatively, but no patient had a positive Trendelenburg or Duchenne limp at the last follow-up. On the basis of our findings, we believe that the direct anterior approach is a safe and reproducible technique for total hip arthroplasty with subtrochanteric shorte

Multiplexed microsatellite loci in American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos): a severely affected natural host of West Nile virus.

Recent advances in high throughput molecular techniques have allowed the development of cost- and time-effective libraries of molecular markers, such as microsatellites, for population genetic studies in non-model species. The American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos, is recognized to be one of the species that has been most negatively affected by the emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America in 1999. Genetic monitoring of the process of a declining population after the introduction of an infectious disease can provide insights into the demographic and evolutionary impact of a pathogen i

Modular and Non-modular Conical Tapered Stems in Total Hip Arthroplasty for Crowe III and IV Hip Dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Conical stems are effective in total hip arthroplasty for high-degree dysplasia, but no comparative studies about modular and non-modular versions are available. By comparing 3 conical stems in 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT)-based simulations in Crowe III and IV dysplasia, the study sought to assess the rate of implants allowing correct biomechanical reconstruction and the correlations between the 3 stem reconstructions and native hip morphology. METHODS: Using a 3D CT-based simulation, 3 different conical stems (single-taper, modular neck, and proximal junction modul

Helminths of the hooded crow (Corvus cornix) in cities and beyond: a descriptive analysis of historical and contemporary data from Ukraine.

This study presents data on helminth communities from 93 Hooded Crows (Corvus cornix). The dataset includes historical and contemporary records from three localities in Ukraine with different levels of urbanisation: Kyiv, the Middle Dnipro River, and Polissya. Thirty-two helminth species were identified, including 14 trematodes, six cestodes, 11 nematodes, and one acanthocephalan. The nematodes Eufilariella delicata and Hadjelia truncata are documented in Hooded Crows for the first time. During the statistical analysis, it was revealed that the used dataset is insufficient for robust inference

Direct Anterior Approach in Total Hip Arthroplasty for Severe Crowe IV Dysplasia: Retrospective Clinical and Radiological Study.

Background and Objectives: total hip arthroplasty (THA) for Crowe IV hip dysplasia poses challenges due to severe leg shortening, muscle retraction and bone stock issues, leading to an increased neurological complication, and revision rate. The direct anterior approach (DAA) is used for minimally invasive THA but its role in Crowe IV dysplasia is unclear. This retrospective study examines if DAA effectively restores hip biomechanics in Crowe IV dysplasia patients with <4 cm leg length discrepancy, managing soft tissue and yielding functional improvement, limb length correction, and limited com

Assessing Leg Length Discrepancy Is Necessary Before Arthroplasty in Patients With Unilateral Crowe Type IV Hip Dislocation.

BACKGROUND: THA for high-riding developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is challenging in terms of length equalization. Although previous studies suggested preoperative templating on AP pelvic radiographs is insufficient in patients with unilateral high-riding DDH because of hypoplasia of the hemipelvis on the affected side and unequal femoral and tibial length on scanograms, the results were controversial. The EOS™ (EOS™ Imaging) is a biplane X-ray imaging system using slot-scanning technology. Length and alignment measurements have been shown to be accurate. We used the EOS to compare the l

A novel oppositional binary crow search algorithm with optimal machine learning based postpartum hemorrhage prediction model.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is an obstetric emergency instigated by excessive blood loss which occurs frequently after the delivery. The PPH can result in volume depletion, hypovolemic shock, and anemia. This is particular condition is considered a major cause of maternal deaths around the globe. Presently, physicians utilize visual examination for calculating blood and fluid loss during delivery. Since the classical methods depend on expert knowledge and are inaccurate, automated machine learning based PPH diagnosis models are essential. In regard to this aspect, this study introduces an effi

Campylobacter jejuni Colonization in the Crow Gut Involves Many Deletions within the Cytolethal Distending Toxin Gene Cluster.

Campylobacter spp. are major causes of gastroenteritis worldwide. The virulence potential of Campylobacter shed in crow feces obtained from a roost area in Bothell, Washington, was studied and compared with that from isolates from other parts of Washington and from a different crow species 7,000 miles away in Kolkata, India. Campylobacter organisms were isolated from 61% and 69% of the fecal samples obtained from Washington and Kolkata, respectively, and were confirmed to be C. jejuni The cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) gene cluster from these isolates revealed a truncated sequence of approx
