Colo-cutaneous fistula to the thigh secondary to acute sigmoid diverticulitis: a case report.

Acute diverticulitis is one of the most common gastrointestinal illnesses that requires hospital admission. It has a broad range of presentations from uncomplicated disease to perforation and peritonitis that require emergent surgical exploration. Abscesses are one of the most common complications. We present a case of retroperitoneal abscess with extension to the antero-lateral upper thigh that was successfully treated with open Hartman's procedure with drainage of psoas abscess and open drainage of thigh abscess.

Utero-cutaneous fistula after caesarean section delivery: diagnosis and management of a rare complication.

Utero-cutaneous fistula is an extremely rare condition characterized by an abnormal communication between the anterior wall of the uterus and the abdominal wall. The causes include multiple caesarean sections, incomplete hysterorrhaphy, miscarriages, uterine cavity revision, retention of placental material after delivery, use of drains, post-operative infections, or injuries. Herein, we report a case of a 38-year-old female, who underwent caesarean section 42 days earlier and presented to the emergency room complaining of fever, abdominal pain, and purulent discharge from the abdominal wall fr

Ultrasound-guided autologous blood patch - A novel modality for broncho-pleural-cutaneous fistula closure.

We present a 36-year-old immuno-compromised male with non-resolving pneumonia, who developed a broncho-pleuro-cutaneous fistula following a thoracoscopic biopsy, which was successfully managed with an ultrasound-guided blood patch placed over the bronchial defect. We discuss the mechanism by which this is presumed to close a fistula, thus justifying it as a cost effective and minimally invasive modality of treatment.

Fibro-muscular-periosteal flap and bilobed flap for post-auricular cutaneous mastoid fistula closure.

BACKGROUND: A post-auricular cutaneous mastoid fistula is a rare condition that can occur following radical mastoid surgery, chronic suppurative otitis media or spontaneous exteriorisation of cholesteatoma from the mastoid through the post-auricular skin surface. Management of a post-auricular cutaneous mastoid fistula can be challenging for the surgeon. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes a surgical refinement for post-auricular cutaneous mastoid fistula closure, involving a fibro-muscular-periosteal flap to cover the mastoid cavity, combined with a bilobed flap from the mastoid and lateral neck

Long-term complication after rhinoplasty using porous polyethylene implant: cutaneous fistula of the forehead.

UNLABELLED: Nasal dorsum augmentation is one of the most frequently performed procedures during rhinoplasty, especially in Asians and reconstructive cases. One can use autogenous cartilage grafts or alloplastic implants for this purpose. However, the potential for permanent damage to the skin and soft tissues as well as complications such as infection and extrusion of the implant make autogenous tissue augmentation preferable to alloplastic implantation. Furthermore, there is scant literature information about long-term outcomes and complications related to these implants. This brief report ai

Endocarditis with left ventricular cutaneous fistula after aortic root replacement with a valved conduit.

Infection after aortic root replacement is uncommon, and it can be fatal. Herein, we present the case of a patient who underwent aortic root replacement with a valved conduit and coronary reimplantation. Prosthetic valve endocarditis and left ventricular cutaneous fistula ensued. Either condition alone could have been fatal. The fistula coursed from the valved conduit through the left ventricular outflow tract, behind the left main coronary artery, and to the skin at the upper sternum. Safe surgical entry into the chest was crucial, due to the free communication between the left ventricle, med

Novel use of unilateral galeopericranial flaps for closure of sino-orbital cutaneous fistulas.

Sino-orbital cutaneous fistulas are a well-documented complication of orbital exenteration and sinonasal carcinoma resection. Challenges to successful closure of this common complication include complex anatomy, communication with sinonasal mucosa, persistent mucopurulent drainage, compromised wound healing due to previous irradiation, and wound infection. We describe a novel approach for closure of sino-orbital cutaneous fistulas in two patients using a galeopericranial flap. The galeopericranial flap is ideal due to its thin, pliable nature and predictable, abundant vascularity. Additionally

[Diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for entero-cutaneous fistulas. Personal experience and literature review].

The entero-cutaneous fistulas (ECF) are abnormal communications between intestine and abdominal skin. They can occur spontaneously, or after an injury or a surgical procedure. They are associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Spontaneous fistulas can mainly occur in patients affected by cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, appendicitis, as a result of radiotherapy or injuries. Surgical procedures, carried out in case of neoplastic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, adhesions removal, represent the primary cause in the development of a postoperative fistulas. Ma

Cutaneous advancement flap closure: alternative method for treatment of complicated anal fistulas.

PURPOSE: A retrospective chart review of 20 consecutive patients with 23 anal fistulas treated with cutaneous advancement flap closure was undertaken to ascertain the efficacy of this previously unreported technique. METHODS: The so-called "diamond" and "house" flaps are commonly used to treat anal stenosis, and mucosal advancement flaps are successfully used to close fistulas. The authors began, in 1994, to close selected fistulas with skin advancement flaps after suture closure of the internal opening and adequate drainage of the external opening. Fourteen patients (4 females; average age,

Serum transferrin as a prognostic indicator of spontaneous closure and mortality in gastrointestinal cutaneous fistulas.

OBJECTIVE: This study determined whether there are any laboratory or other features that will enable prediction of spontaneous closure in patients with gastrointestinal cutaneous fistulas. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Although the anatomic criteria for spontaneous closure of gastrointestinal cutaneous fistulas have been presented by several authors, less than 50% of such fistulas tend to close, even in the most recent series. METHODS: A group of patients with gastrointestinal cutaneous fistulas with anatomical features favorable to study were investigated with respect to a series of parameters i

A rare complication of the hydatid cyst of the liver: A case report of Cysto-cutaneous fistula.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hepatic Hydatid cyst of the liver is a parasitic zoonotic illness caused by Echinococcus granulosus that remains endemic in regions where sheep farming is common, particularly in our country, Tunisia. While it is a benign disease, its natural evolution can be marked by life-threatening complications. Cysto-biliary communication is the most common and serious complication. Spontaneous cutaneous fistulization is an extremely rare complication. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 47-year-old female who presented with a chronic discharging sinus in the left upp

Spontaneous cutaneous-parotid fistula of the cheek caused by sialolithiasis in a child: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cheek fistulas of salivary origin in children are very rare, predominantly of congenital or traumatic origin but rarely caused by parotid sialolithiasis given its low prevalence in paediatric populations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old child with no history other than substantial left-cheek swelling for 2 months was referred. We identified a cutaneous fistula with seropurulent discharge. At this time, we only observed mild inflammation of the left parotid duct papilla with no visible calculi. A first ultrasound scan only detected acute inflammation of the parotid duct that was

Thirty-day outcomes in the operative management of intestinal-cutaneous fistulas: A NSQIP analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal-cutaneous fistulas (ICFs) constitute a major surgical challenge. Definitive surgical treatment of ICFs continues to be associated with significant morbidity. The purpose of this study was to utilize a nationwide database to define the morbidity associated with current treatment strategies in the surgical management of ICFs. METHODS: The 2006-2017 American College of Surgeon National Surgical Quality Improvement datasets (ACS-NSQIP) were used to assess 30-day morbidity and mortality after surgical repair of ICFs. Outcomes for emergent repair were compared to elective r

Surgical treatment of intractable cutaneous fistula with osteomyelitis in the neck developed after esophagectomy.

A case of intractable cutaneous fistula in an esophagogastrostomized region complicated by osteomyelitis is reported. A three-stage operation was performed, and gratifying results were obtained. The patient was a 74-year-old man who received a subtotal esophagectomy and a cervical esophagogastrostomy through a retrosternal approach for advanced esophageal cancer. Following subsequent radiotherapy, the anastomosed region in the neck was found to have been stenosed. Endoscopic balloon dilatation was then performed and perforation of the stenosed region occurred to form an intractable fistula. A

Groin abscess: a vesico-cutaneous fistula to the groin. A rare complication of open prostatectomy.

In developed countries, open prostatectomy for benign disease is now reserved for large prostates. This is not the case in the developing world where Millin's prostatectomy continues to be an important procedure, perhaps due to lack of endoscopic technology and training. We report a case of vesico-cutaneous fistula as a late complication of open prostatectomy presenting as a groin mass. A review of the English language literature shows this to be the first case of its kind.

Appendico-sigmoid-cutaneous fistula following percutaneous drainage of a periappendiceal abscess: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Appendico-colonic fistula and appendico-cutaneous fistula are rare complications of appendicitis. Their concurrent occurrence is exceptionally uncommon and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman presented with recurrent right lower quadrant pain and persistent feculent drainage 2 months after percutaneous drainage for a periappendiceal abscess. Computed tomography (CT) showed perforated appendicitis with a periappendiceal abscess but did not clearly identify the fistulous tract. Drainage-catheter fistulography, CT after

Spontaneous colo-vesical and colo-cutaneous fistula complicating a sigmoid diverticulitis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Diverticular disease is a challenge in western countries. The occurrence of fistula complicating diverticulitis is uncommon. As a result, spontaneous and synchronous colo-vesical and colo-cutaneous is an even rarer situation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 68 years old patient with medical history of bilateral inguinal hernia surgery and diverticular disease. He was admitted for fecal fistula through to the left inguinal area and recurrent urinary tract infections evolving for 2 months. Clinical examination revealed fecaluria and colo-cutaneous fistula.
