A thalamo-cortical model of the executive attention system.

In a previous paper [Kilmer (1996) Neural Netw 9: 567-573] we developed a differential equation model of how a stable focus of attention could be maintained in a higher mammalian brain. The so-called TRC model consisted of interconnected modules, with each module comprised of a simple representations of parts of the reticular thalamic nucleus, specific thalamic nuclei, nonspecific thalamic nuclei, and cortex, together with the known excitatory and inhibitory interconnections between them. TRC was analyzed only for steady states under zero inputs. Here we analyze the behavior of TRC_2, a substa

Simulation of plasticity in the adult visual cortex.

Retinal plasticity has been shown in the adult visual nervous system in mammals. Following a retinal lesion (scotoma) there is a reorganization of the cortical receptive field distribution: cortical neurons selective to visual stimuli in the area of the visual field corresponding to the retinal lesion, become selective to other parts of the visual field. In this work, we study this effect with a self-organizing neural network. In a first stage, the network reaches a pattern of connectivity that represents normal development of neuronal selectivity. The scotoma is simulated by perturbing accord

Desynchronizing double-pulse phase resetting and application to deep brain stimulation.

Based on a stochastic phase-resetting approach, three different double-pulse stimulation techniques are presented here which make it possible to effectively desynchronize a population of phase oscillators in the presence of noise. In the three sorts of double pulses the first, stronger pulse restarts the cluster independent of its initial dynamic state. The three methods differ with respect to the mechanism through which the second, weaker pulse desynchronizes the cluster. Both first and second pulses are delivered to the same site. Because of the oscillators' global couplings in the model und

Emergent mechanisms in multiple pattern generation of the lobster pyloric network.

By using a hard-wired oscillator network, multiple pattern generation of the lobster pyloric network is simulated. The network model is constructed using a relaxation oscillator representing an oscillatory or quiescent (i.e. steady-state) neuron. Modulatory inputs to the network are hypothesized to cause changes in the dynamical properties of each pyloric neuron: the oscillatory frequency, the postinhibitory rebound property, and the resting membrane potential. Changes in each of these properties are induced by changing appropriate parameters of the oscillator. By changing seven parameters of

Lateral spike conduction velocity in the visual cortex affects spatial range of synchronization and receptive field size without visual experience: a learning model with spiking neurons.

Classical receptive fields (cRF) increase in size from the retina to higher visual centers. The present work shows how temporal properties, in particular lateral spike velocity and spike input correlation, can affect cRF size and position without visual experience. We demonstrate how these properties are related to the spatial range of cortical synchronization if Hebbian learning dominates early development. For this, a largely reduced model of two successive levels of the visual cortex is developed (e.g., areas V1 and V2). It consists of retinotopic networks of spiking neurons with constant s

Episodes of low-dimensional self-organized dynamics from electroencephalographic alpha-signals.

Self-organized neuronal dynamics revealed by cortical alpha-rhythms occur as episodes, which are rarely observed without extraction of the alpha-band from the other spectral components. Three episodes of an unusually long duration of 10 s, two with no signal processing after data recording at the clinic, are described and show evidence of low-dimensional alpha-dynamics. The evidence is gained from an analysis of scaled structures appearing in families of slope curves of the correlation integrals and is checked against time reparametrization. The data for the two unprocessed 10-s episodes are u

Non-linear analysis of the electroencephalogram in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare, neurological, dementing disorder characterised by periodic sharp waves in the electroencephalogram (EEG). Non-linear analysis of these EEG changes may provide insight into the abnormal dynamics of cortical neural networks in this disorder. Babloyantz et al. have suggested that the periodic sharp waves reflect low-dimensional chaotic dynamics in the brain. In the present study this hypothesis was re-examined using newly developed techniques for non-linear time series analysis. We analysed the EEG of a patient with autopsy-proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease usi

Coordination of side-to-side head movements and walking in amphetamine-treated rats: a stereotyped motor pattern as a stable equilibrium in a dynamical system.

Rats injected with 5.0 mg/kg (+)-amphetamine perform, at one stage of the drug's influence, rhythmic side-to-side head movements while walking. This makes them an interesting preparation for investigating how stereotyped motor patterns emerge from the coordination of periodic movements. We report here such a pattern we have isolated: the left foreleg and the right hindleg land on the ground as the head reaches the peak of its movement to the right, and vice versa (contra-lateral pattern). We show that this pattern can be explained as a stable equilibrium in a simple, nonlinear dynamical model,

A kinematic theory of rapid human movements. Part I. Movement representation and generation.

This paper proposes a kinematic theory that can be used to study and analyze rapid human movements. It describes a synergy in terms of the agonist and antagonist neuromuscular systems involved in the production of these movements. It is shown that these systems have a log-normal impulse response that results from the limiting behavior of a large number of interdependent neuromuscular networks, as predicted by the central limit theorem. The delta log-normal law that follows from this model is very general and can reproduce almost perfectly the complete velocity patterns of an end-effector. The

Analyzing the dynamics of hand tremor time series.

We investigate physiological, essential and parkinsonian hand tremor measured by the acceleration of the stretched hand. Methods from the theory of dynamical systems and from stochastics are used. It turns out that the physiological tremor can be described as a linear stochastic process, and that the parkinsonian tremor is nonlinear and deterministic, even chaotic. The essential tremor adopts a middle position, it is nonlinear and stochastic.

Hebbian learning reconsidered: representation of static and dynamic objects in associative neural nets.

According to Hebb's postulate for learning, information presented to a neural net during a learning session is stored in synaptic efficacies. Long-term potentiation occurs only if the postsynaptic neuron becomes active in a time window set up by the presynaptic one. We carefully interpret and mathematically implement the Hebb rule so as to handle both stationary and dynamic objects such as single patterns and cycles. Since the natural dynamics contains a rather broad distribution of delays, the key idea is to incorporate these delays in the learning session. As theory and numerical simulations

Simulation of chaotic EEG patterns with a dynamic model of the olfactory system.

The main parts of the central olfactory system are the bulb (OB), anterior nucleus (AON), and prepyriform cortex (PC). Each part consists of a mass of excitatory or inhibitory neurons that is modelled in its noninteractive state by a 2nd order ordinary differential equation (ODE) having a static nonlinearity. The model is called a KOe or a KOi set respectively; it is evaluated in the "open loop" state under deep anesthesia. Interactions in waking states are represented by coupled KO sets, respectively KIe (mutual excitation) and KIi (mutual inhibition). The coupled KIe and KIi sets form a KII

Electronic simulation of cones, horizontal cells and bipolar cells of generalized vertebrate cone retina.

Electronic analogue of my theoretical model of generalized vertebrate cone retina [Siminoff: J. Theor. Biol. 86, 763 (1980)] is presented. Cone mosaic is simulated by 25 X 21 grid of phototransistors that have colored filters mounted in front of then to produce red-, green-, and blue-sensitive cones arranged in a "trichromatic" retina. Each retinal element is simulated by Summator-Integrator and unit gain voltage invertes are used to give correct polarities to output voltages. Dynamic properties of retinal elements are developed solely by temporal interplay of antagonistic input voltages with

Perceptual organization as nested control.

It is argued here that perceptual organization is the structuring of environmental stimuli into nested structures of control. This view is derived from our proposal that the perceptual system forces any stimulus set to have the algebraic structure G of a machine, and that G is given a specific factorization sequence, G = G1 X G2 X ... X Gn, induced by dynamical systems criteria which the organism imposes on the environment. An investigation into these factorization sequences reveals that any such sequence is split into two subsequences, one structuring the way in which the stimulus set can cha

Egomotion and relative depth map from optical flow.

When an observer moves in a 3D world, optical flow fields are generated on his retina. We argue that such an observer can in principle compute the parameters of his egomotion, and following this, the relative depth map of the stationary environment solely from the instantaneous positional velocity fields (IPVF). Moreover, we argue that in the stationary world, this analysis can be done locally, and is not dependent on global properties of the optical flow under the imposed ocnstraints (smoothness of the egomotion path, rigidity of objects, temporal continuity of perception). To investigate the

Body movements and retinal pattern displacements while approaching a stationary object in the walking fly, Calliphora erythrocephala.

When a walking fly approaches a stationary object two types of body movements are distinguishable. Type I body movements are characterized by low frequencies (0.4-1.3 Hz) and large amplitudes (28-65 degrees). Superimposed on these movements are type II body movements which are characterized by high frequencies (7.3-10.6 Hz) and small amplitudes (5.9-8.2 degrees) (Figs. 3-6; Table 1). Type II movements occur no matter whether the fly is fixating a pattern or orientating itself in homogeneous surroundings without any pattern. In contrast, only 72% of the flies with immobilized heads and 62% of t

A model describing nonlinearities in hearing by active processes with saturation at 40 dB.

Data from literature related to nonlinearities of the peripheral part of the hearing system are collected and extended by results from measurements of acoustical responses, masking, cubic difference tones and Zwicker tones. The data indicate 40 dB as a significant value for the dynamic range in neurophysiology as well as for the sensation level in psychoacoustics dividing the total level range into two areas of different characteristics. A preliminary model assuming that the outer hair cells act as an amplifier which contains saturation (corresponding to 40 dB) and feed back to sensitize the i

Pattern generation in the lobster (Panulirus) stomatogastric ganglion. II. Pyloric network simulation.

1. Results from the companion paper were incorporated into a physiologically realistic computer model of the three principal cell types (PD/AB, LP, PY) of the pyloric network in the stomatogastric ganglion. Parameters for the model were mostly calculated (sometimes estimated) from experimental data rather than fitting the model to observed output patterns. 2. The initial run was successful in predicting several features of the pyloric pattern: the observed gap between PD and LP bursts, the appropriate sequence of the activity periods (PD, LP, PY), and a substantial PY burst not properly simula

Pattern generation in the lobster (Panulirus) stomatogastric ganglion. I. Pyloric neuron kinetics and synaptic interactions.

There are a number of perspectives gained from a quantitative analysis of the pyloric system which may be applicable to other simple pattern generators: 1. The system is organized around a dominant, endogenously-bursting neuron group, and its properties are tailored to that dominance. In particular, synaptic strengths and firing frequencies of that group appear just sufficient to suppress postsynaptic "follower" cells if the latter are not too highly excited. 2. Repetitive firing properties of follower neurons are such as to facilitate their switch-like mode of activity. This includes pacemake

Fixation-sensitive areas in the eyes of the walking fly, Calliphora erythrocephala.

In Calliphora erythrocephala the visual fixation behaviour in one-eyed flies and partial blinded flies has been investigated. One-eyed flies show approximately the same stripe and edge fixation response as intact flies. Elimination of the frontal eye parts including the binocular field of vision does not effect the visual stripe fixation. On the other hand, if only the frontal areas of both eyes including the binocular field of vision are left open, no preferential direction can be observed (Fig. 1--3). The results imply the existence of a fixation-sensitive area of the eye located outside the
