Relationship between epidermal growth factor and dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulphate in breast cyst fluid.

Gross cystic breast disease is a common condition. Women with apocrine breast cysts may be at higher risk of breast cancer than women with cysts which are lined by flattened epithelium. Apocrine cysts have been shown to be associated with higher intracystic levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and intracystic sodium to potassium ratios of less than 3. In this study we measured the concentrations of epidermal growth factor, dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulphate in breast cyst fluid. The concentrations of all three analytes were significantly higher in cysts with intracystic Na+/K+ ratios

Alpha 1-antitrypsin, transferrin, alkaline phosphatase, phosphohexoseisomerase and gamma-glutamyltransferase in breast cyst fluid.

The levels of alpha 1-antitrypsin, transferrin, alkaline phosphatase, phosphohexoseisomerase and gamma-glutamyltransferase were measured in 32 samples of breast cyst fluid, and a wide range of values was obtained. The levels observed in some samples for these parameters, being similar to those of normal serum, might suggest a mechanism of plasma exudation for the formation of breast cyst fluid. Nevertheless, a comparison with the maximum normal serum reference value revealed very high levels of gamma-glutamyltransferase in all of the samples; about 50% also exhibited high levels of phosphohexo

Presence of alpha-lactalbumin, epidermal growth factor, epithelial membrane antigen, and gross cystic disease fluid protein (15,000 daltons) in breast cyst fluid.

The frequency of gross cystic breast disease in premenopausal women and its possible association with increased breast cancer risk emphasize the importance of investigations relating to breast cyst fluid composition. In order to contribute to a better analysis of this medium, we have measured four proteins the presence of which in human milk was well documented. Breast cyst fluid specimens from 266 breast cyst disease patients were assayed and compared as to concentrations of alpha-lactalbumin, gross cystic disease fluid protein (GCDFP-15), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and epithelial membran

Recurrent ovarian cyst and mutation of the Gs alpha gene in ovarian cyst fluid cells: what is the link with McCune-Albright syndrome?

Isolated peripheral precocious puberty due to recurrent ovarian cysts evokes a McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS). This syndrome associates endocrine dysfunction such as precocious puberty, polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, and "café-au-lait" skin lesions. We report the case of a 3-y-old girl who presented with peripheral puberty with extremely elevated oestradiol level, low LH and FSH levels, and an ovarian cyst that quickly resolved. Skeletal X-rays were normal and she had no café-au-lait spots. GnRH analogue treatment was ineffective. A second ovarian cyst appeared and was completely drained under

Differential protein expression in the secretory fluids of maxillary sinusitis and maxillary retention cyst.

Both maxillary sinusitis (MS) and maxillary retention cyst (MRC) involve the maxillary sinus and show similar clinical features. Clinically, differentiating between MS and MRC is sometimes difficult in asymptomatic patients, despite their quite different pathogenic behaviors. To identify differential protein expressions in the secretory fluids of MS and MRC, 25 cases of asymptomatic MS and 15 cases of asymptomatic MRC were examined pathologically in this study. All patients underwent routine endoscopic sinus surgery or modified Caldwell-Luc procedure and the sinus mucosal specimens obtained du

[Pathologic fluid collection of mesentery, differential diagnosis of mesenteric cysts - case report].

Mesenteric cyst is a pathologic fluid collection that very rarely occurs anywhere in the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract from the duodenum to the rectum. The etiology of mesenteric cysts has not yet been completely understood. It ranges from tumorous, infectious, lymphatic and embryological to post-traumatic or post-operative origin. Symptoms of the illness are usually non-specific, caused mainly by intestinal obstruction. Diagnosis is often accidental. Therapy is exclusively surgical. In the following text, the authors present a case report of a 50-year-old patient operated on due to

Radioimmunoassay for the measurement of thrombospondin in plasma and breast cyst fluid: validation and clinical application.

Thrombospondin is an adhesive protein that has been implicated in malignancy, specifically in tumour progression and angiogenesis. We developed a radioimmunoassay for the measurement of thrombospondin in plasma and breast cyst fluid. The assay exhibited high accuracy, with recoveries of 102-136% and acceptable imprecision, with an intra-assay coefficient of variation (CV) of <7.5% across the analytical range 30-1000 ng/mL and inter-assay CV of 4.4% and 7.7% at 152 and 224 ng/mL, respectively. Thrombospondin measured in the breast cyst fluid of patients with gross cystic disease of the breast s

[The prognostic significance of the measurement of Ca 15-3 in the fluid of large breast cysts].

Ca 15-3 was assayed in serum and in breast cysts fluid of 78 non neoplastic patients presenting Gross Cysts (GCD). In apocrine cysts and in the mixed type (serous and apocrine, class III) relapse was indicated by high serum and intracystic levels of the marker. Ca 15-3, therefore, may discriminate in a group of cysts a higher cellular resistance as well as an increased cell proliferation. Results suggest an important role of the marker in the follow up of patients with GCD and for the early detection of cyst relapse.

Post-Operative Low Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure Headache in Giant Tarlov Cysts.

Giant Tarlov cysts are described as fluid-filled sacs located in the spine. They are mostly found in the sacral region, but are usually asymptomatic. The symptomatic Tarlov cysts are planned for surgical treatment in the form of laminectomy and marsupilisation of cysts. These surgical procedures can have complications like cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, bacterial meningitis, and radiculopathic pain. We report a case of a 30-year-old male who presented with complaints of pain in his left leg for one and half years, urinary incontinence off and on for six months, and scrotal pain for two months

Spontaneous perforation of choledochal cyst: a case with unusual distribution of fluid in the retroperitoneal space.

Images of perforated choledochal cysts typically show an intraperitoneal fluid collection. We report a case with, in addition to free intraperitoneal fluid, fluid collection in the right-side anterior pararenal and perirenal spaces. Surgery confirmed the presence of a perforation at the junction of the cystic duct and the common bile duct. This perforation may explain the biliary leakage extending into the free peritoneal space as well as into the anterior pararenal space and the hepatoduodenal ligament. Anterior pararenal and perirenal spaces communicate with the infrarenal space, and this ma

Microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti in cyst fluid of tumors of the brain: a report of three cases.

Microfilariae of various nematodes, including Loa loa, Dirofilariae, and Onchocerca volvulus, have been identified in the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS, however, is a rare site for the isolation of microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti. To the best of our knowledge, the presence of microfilariae of W. bancrofti in tumor cyst fluids or cerebrospinal fluid has not been reported to date. We report three cases in which microfilariae were identified in the cyst fluid of tumors of the brain. Cyst fluid aspirated from space-occupying lesions in the thalamus and C6-D1 spinal segments in a 46-y

Accumulation of 4- and 5-ene steroid sulfates in human breast cyst fluids.

Gross cystic disease of the breast is one of the most common diseases of adult females. Breast cyst fluid contains various steroid hormones. In order to obtain more information about the concentrations of 4- and 5-ene steroids in human breast cyst fluids, levels of pregnenolone sulfate (PREGS), pregnenolone (PREG), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A total of 35 human breast cyst fluid samples, obtained from 35 patients (28-54 years old) were analyzed. Cyst fluid electrolytes were simultane

Detection of hydatid antigen by co-agglutination in fluid samples from hydatid cysts.

The co-agglutination (Co-A) procedure was standardized and evaluated to detect hydatid antigen in fluid samples aspirated from hydatid cysts. Samples were collected from 14 hydatid cysts in different organs (liver, 7; lung, 5; multiple abdominal cysts, 1; and kidney, 1) by surgery. Echinococcus granulosus scolices and hooklets were seen in only 6 (42.85%) samples by routine microscopy. In contrast, hydatid antigen was demonstrated in all the samples by Co-A (100% sensitivity). Co-A could be employed as a simple and rapid diagnostic procedure, as an alternative to microscopy, to confirm the hyd

Epidermal growth factor precursor is present in a variety of human renal cyst fluids.

Progressive human renal cystic diseases are characterized by proliferation of the epithelial cells lining the cyst. The kidney synthesizes epidermal growth factor and its presence in renal cyst fluid might contribute to renal epithelial cell proliferation. We screened autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, acquired renal cystic disease, the von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, multilocular cystic nephroma, multicystic dysplastic kidney disease and simple cyst fluids for the presence of epidermal growth factor by radioreceptor assay, specific radioimmunoassay, immunoprecipitation and immunoblotti

The epidemiology of gross cystic disease of the breast confirmed by biopsy or by aspiration of cyst fluid.

This study concerns 3443 patients treated by 1 physician for benign breast conditions, with follow-up on 94% of the patients averaging 19 years. Over three quarters of these patients had gross cystic disease (GCD) of the breast confirmed by aspiration of cyst fluid or by biopsy. Diagnosis of GCD by microscopic pathology review alone is shown to have high error rates when compared with information in the operative report and the gross pathology report. The risk of subsequent breast cancer for GCD patients was more than double the rates in the general population, and about the same as that of pa

Structures and concentrations of fifteen different steroid sulfates in human breast cyst fluids.

By applying capillary gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), a simultaneous quantitation of all important steroid sulfates present in a number of breast cyst fluids, has been obtained. The fact that prevailing androgen sulfate structures in the cyst fluids are different from those in blood suggests at least intracystic metabolism of blood-born precursors. Particularly greater amounts of 5 alpha-reduced steroids are found in breast cysts. 5 alpha-Androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol is a major androgen sulfate of breast cyst fluids, its concentration being some 200
