A Cross-Sectional Study Comparing Traumatic Alopecia Among B-Boys and B-Girls to Other Dance Styles and Its Impact on Dance Performance and Health.

INTRODUCTION: Breaking, often mislabeled as breakdancing in the media, is a dance style originating from the Bronx of New York in the early 1970s. A unique condition in this population is a form of alopecia known as "headspin hole," or "breakdancer overuse syndrome" of the scalp. This form of hair loss may show a variety of patterns based on the activities of the dancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between alopecia and breaking, the level of concern dancers have regarding hair loss, barriers to medical treatment, and how it affects their dancing. METHODS: Thi

Impact of Amazonian dance on speech performance in people with Parkinson's disease.

Dance interventions improve limb motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet their impact on speech-related motor control and overall language (e.g., semantics) remains unexplored. To test this, we conducted a 12-week exploratory clinical trial comparing Amazonian dance (two groups: north and south) with a matched-physical intensity control (Nordic walking) and ran automated speech and language analysis pre- and post-intervention. The clearest corrected effect was in the dance north group, who showed improvement in prosody (main tone) compared with Nordic walking. We observed additional co

The Harmonious Dance: A Narrative Review on Psychedelics and Music in Therapeutic Settings.

The integration of psychedelics and music in therapeutic settings is gaining recognition for its potential to enhance mental health outcomes. This review synthesizes current evidence on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this synergy, focusing on receptor-level pathways (e.g., 5-HT2A receptor agonism, BDNF-TrkB signaling) and neural circuit dynamics (e.g., default mode network desynchronization, thalamo-cortical connectivity) that mediate psychedelic action and mu-sic-induced emotional processing. By examining how music, acting as a "hidden therapist," ampli-fies the emotional and cogni

Memory traces and sensory perceptions. When dance enters the session.

This paper looks at how sensory perception and motility in the session can activate and reshape memory-traces of unconscious infantile sexuality. It investigates how listening to them in the transference serves as an appeal to drive representation, the redeployment of the autoerotism of infantile sexuality and its participation in the production of fantasy, contributing to the accomplishment of infantile wishes. The author explores this hypothesis in the psychoanalytic work of a female patient who practises dance and makes particular use of sensory perceptions and motility in the session. She

A tool for Dravet syndrome-associated neuropsychiatric comorbidities evaluation (DANCE).

BACKGROUND: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a rare and severe form of epilepsy that begins in infancy, which is primarily caused by pathogenic variants in the SCN1A gene. DS is characterized by prolonged and frequent drug-resistant seizures, as well as developmental delays and behavioral problems. The identification of these comorbidities is based on clinical interview and relies on healthcare professionals (HCPs) experience. METHODS: We assembled a group of expert HCPs and caregivers to create a screening checklist for assessing DS-Associated Neuropsychiatric Comorbidities (DANC). The checklist incl

Impact of dance therapy on adults with psychological trauma: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dance therapy is thought to improve mental and physical health by activating psychological and physiological processes such as motor coordination, and expression of emotions. Some currently used mind-body interventions for posttraumatic symptoms address both mental and physical health. Although some studies have evaluated the efficacy of dance therapy for posttraumatic symptoms, a systematic review of extant research has not been conducted. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of dance therapy in adults with psychological trauma as well as the barriers and facilitators associated w

Exotic Dance in Baltimore: From Entry to STI/HIV Risk.

Research has documented health risks associated with sex work, but few U.S. studies have focused on the exotic dance industry. We undertook this study to describe the factors that influenced women's entry into exotic dance and explored the relation of these forces to their subsequent sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV risk trajectory. Qualitative interviews (N = 25) were conducted with female exotic dancers from June through August 2009. Data were analyzed through Atlas-ti using an inductive approach. Economic vulnerability was the primary force behind women's initiation into the profess

The filarial dance sign in scrotal filarial infection: a case report.

We describe a case of the filarial dance sign (FDS) in the epididymal region of a 22-year-old migrant worker from India who presented with a tender right scrotal swelling. Sonographic examination revealed multiple cystic lesions in the paratesticular region. The FDS was visualized within one of the cystic lesions. FDS is diagnostic of lymphatic filariasis in the appropriate clinical context.

Breast filariasis: real-time sonographic imaging of the filarial dance.

A 50-year-old woman presented with a palpable tender nodule in the upper quadrant of the breast that was clinically thought to be a fibroadenoma, with mammographic findings of a well-defined lobulated density. Sonographic examination revealed a "filarial dance sign" within the cystic lesion, which is diagnostic of lymphatic breast filariasis. In endemic areas, sonographic examination is recommended to search for this pathognomonic real-time diagnostic feature and, if present, to initiate treatment without delay.

Survey of the effects of aerobic dance on the lower extremity in aerobic instructors.

The rate of aerobic dance injuries has been high for two decades. To determine the types of lower-extremity injuries to aerobic instructors, a questionnaire was sent to 18 fitness centers in the Sydney, Australia, metropolitan area requesting information on the number and types of injuries, frequency of activity levels, footwear worn, and treatments sought. The reported rate of injury was 77%. The leg was the most common site of injury, reported by 52.9% of respondents, followed by the foot and ankle (32.8%), and the knee (20%). These figures are comparable to previous studies. Further investi

Feasibility of a live-stream dance class for people with chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Adapted dance is a promising intervention to improve physical and psychosocial well-being post-stroke. At-home participation with a live-streamed dance program could address barriers to in-person attendance (e.g., limited community ambulation, and transportation). However, psychosocial benefits may be diminished because of reduced social interactions. The primary study objective was to assess the feasibility and safety of a live-streamed dance program for chronic stroke. Secondary objectives were to characterize participants who chose live-stream vs in-person options and quantify p

The effects of dance on maternal childbirth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous guidelines have clearly stated that dance is safe and beneficial during pregnancy and for childbirth. However, due to the small sample size of individual studies and different interventions, there were inconsistencies about the effect of dance on maternal childbirth. METHODS: We included studies evaluating the effect of dance on women in labor. Risk of bias was assessed using the revised Risk of bias assessment tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Data analyses was performed using Review Manager Software version 5.4. RESULTS: A total of 12 RCTs comprising 1,486
