Pacing and clinical electrophysiology : PACE1993eng
In recent years, pacemaker lead failure due to compressive damage has been reported with increasing frequency. To document the mechanism of this failure, we evaluated explanted mechanically damaged leads with electrical testing, optical microscopy, and in some cases, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, we performed an autopsy study to measure the compressive loads on catheters placed percutaneously through the costoclavicular angle, as well as by cephalic cutdown. Of the 49 explanted compression damaged leads with enough clinical data for analysis, all had been placed by percutane

Twelve patients with clinical indications of intracranial neurovascular compression (6, hemifacial spasm; 4, trigeminal neuralgia; 2, vertigo and tinnitus) were studied by MRI. Axial 1 mm thick slices were obtained in a 1.5 T unit using a three-dimensional (3D) fast low angle shot data set of 32 contiguous slices. The data were post-processed with multiplanar reconstruction algorithms to obtain oblique sagittal (along the long axis of a nerve) images or coronal images with a slice thickness of 0.8 mm. The MR angiographic images were also obtained from the same 3D data set with maximum intensit

Objective Abdominopelvic vascular compression syndromes occur when the vascular structures either cause compression or are compressed by the surrounding hollow viscera. Apart from retrocaval ureter and UPJO (ureteropelvic junction obstruction), ureteric compression by other vascular structures is rare. We present five rare cases of ureter compression caused by the inferior mesenteric vein, testicular vein, ovarian vein, common iliac arteries, and an unnamed tributary of the inferior vena cava (IVC). Methods Retrospective data of all cases of hydroureteronephrosis between January 2019 and March

STUDY DESIGN: This study examined the effect of lumbar nerve root compression on nociceptive neuropeptides in the axonal flow using an in vivo model.
OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate changes in axonal flow after nerve root compression by using immunohistochemical techniques to detect substance P (SP) and somatostatin (SOM), which is thought to be involved in temperature and pain sensation.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Disturbance of intraradicular blood flow and nerve fiber deformation caused by mechanical compression are thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of diseases charact

The standard treatment for patients with confirmed Venous Leg Ulcers (VLUs) is compression therapy to improve the function of the calf muscle pump. There is a significant cohort of patients who are unable to tolerate optimal compression therapy or indeed any level of compression therapy. In addition, there is a cohort of patients who can tolerate compression whose ulcers show little or no evidence of healing. There is a need for ways to further improve calf muscle pump function and to improve venous ulcer healing in these patients. Published data were reviewed on the use of Muscle Pump Activat

ClC-3 chloride channel has been proved to have a relationship with the expression of osteogenic markers during osteogenesis, persistent static compression can upregulate the expression of ClC-3 and regulate osteodifferentiation in osteoblasts. However, there was no study about the relationship between the expression of ClC-3 and osteodifferentiation after dynamic compression. In this study, we applied dynamic compression on MC3T3-E1 cells to detect the expression of ClC-3, runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2), osteopontin (OPN), nuclear-associated ant

OBJECTIVE: Currently no established criteria exist to guide use of ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) for fetal neck mass management. This study aims to correlate prenatal radiographic findings with incidence of ex utero intrapartum treatment and necessity of airway intervention at delivery.
METHODS: We reviewed our EXIT experience between 2012 and 17. Furthermore, we performed a literature review of articles reporting incidences of fetal neck masses considered for EXIT. Articles that were included (1) discussed prenatal radiographic findings such as size, features, and evidence of compres

BACKGROUND: Reliable 3D visualization of neurovascular relationships in the posterior fossa at the surface of the brainstem is still critical due to artifacts of imaging. To assess neurovascular compression syndromes more reliably, a new approach of 3D visualization based on registration and fusion of high-resolution MR data is presented.
METHODS: A total of 80 patients received MRI data with 3D-CISS and 3D-TOF at 3.0 Tesla. After registration and subsequent segmentation, the vascular information of the TOF data was fused into the CISS data. Two 3D visualizations were created for each patient

Most studies of chronic nerve compression focus on large nerve function in painful conditions, and only few studies have assessed potential changes in the function of small nerve fibers during chronic nerve compression and recovery from compression. Cutaneous pressure-induced vasodilation is a neurovascular phenomenon that relies on small neuropeptidergic fibers controlling the cutaneous microvasculature. We aimed to characterize potential changes in function of these small fibers and/or in cutaneous microvascular function following short-term (1-month) and long-term (6-month) nerve compressio

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of secondary lymphedema still remains an important medical issue. Treatment response is characterized by periodic remission rather than complete recovery. Compression methods currently used as part of complete decongestive therapy vary considerably in efficacy. Manual drainage, bandaging, and compression pumps are ineffective in everyday practice. Positive results have increasingly been reported where compression garments have been used as part of the treatment. This pilot study demonstrates a beneficial effect following the use of compression corsets in the treatment o

The epidural compression secondary to genitourinary malignancies is relatively uncommon. Of 2118 patients who were diagnosed as having a genitourinary malignancy at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center from 1970-1979, 21 are known to have developed an epidural cord compression by June 30, 1985 (16 from prostate, 1 from urinary bladder, and 4 from renal origin). The following items were reviewed in these 21 patients: age of the patient at diagnosis of the primary tumor; primary site of the genitourinary primary; time in months from the date of diagnosis of the genitourinary primary to the d

The etiological basis of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is unknown but vascular (arterial and venous) compression of the trigeminal nerve roots has emerged as the likely cause in most cases. Here we examine the evidence for the "brain sagging/arterial elongation hypothesis" with reference to the cerebral arteries and veins believed to cause the compression. Most often implicated are the superior cerebellar artery, the anterior and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries, and the superior petrosal vein including several of its tributaries. The reviewed data suggest that the theoretical support for a

Ulnar compression neuropathy is the second most frequent entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity and is observed with increased prevalence among diabetes mellitus patients. The metabolic burden of diabetes mellitus, including chronic hyperglycaemia, microvascular dysfunction, and systemic inflammation, promotes nerve susceptibility to mechanical compression. This review summarises current evidence on the association between diabetes mellitus and ulnar compression neuropathy, highlighting epidemiological data, metabolic contributors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic tools, and managemen

INTRODUCTION: The vertebrae are the most common localization of hydatid disease of bone. This can lead to fatal consequences.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 40-year-old-man, from a rural area, who had symptoms of medullary compression. The diagnosis of primary vertebral hydatid cyst, already suspected on the imaging data, was confirmed. A right posterolateral thoracotomy allowed drainage of the cyst and relief of the medullary compression. Medical treatment with albendazole was continued for 4 months. The postoperative course was uneventful and the symptoms of medullary compression reso
