This study demonstrates an efficient and eco-friendly method for extracting flavonoids from Cercis chinensis flowers using ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (UAE-DES) extraction. Among 17 DES systems screened, L-Proline-Lactic acid (DES-11) achieved the best extraction yield (56.53 mg/g), significantly surpassing that of conventional 60 % ethanol extraction (13.65 mg/g). Through Response Surface Methodology optimization of key parameters (ultrasonic temperature, time, and water content), a maximum flavonoid yield of 95.84 mg/g was obtained under ideal conditions: 32 % water, 36 °C, and

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), regarded as green alternatives to volatile organic solvents, are commonly prepared by heating; however, despite the possible formation of byproducts during heating, the toxicological relevance of their preparation conditions remains unresolved. The aim of this study was to disentangle preparation-dependent in vivo toxicity from the intrinsic effects of DESs through mechanistic insights using reline-a widely used DES comprising choline chloride and urea (1:2)-as a model solvent. Two forms of reline, prepared by either heating (reline_H) or freeze-drying (reline_FD

Graphene oxide (GO), a two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial, exhibits a large surface area, rich oxygen-containing functionalities, and favorable aqueous dispersibility, making it a suitable platform for drug delivery. However, traditional covalent modification strategies frequently involve multistep procedures or the use of hazardous organic solvents. In this study, GO was functionalized via a novel green strategy: Diels-Alder (DA) cycloaddition of maleic anhydride (MA) utilizing deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a sustainable reaction medium. The resulting GO-PEG nanocarriers, formed through s

Clean synthetic strategies that embrace the inherent structural features of renewable building blocks to obtain biologically active compounds hold great potential to improve the economic viability of emerging biorefineries. Importantly, such an approach is highly beneficial for the sustainable manufacturing of pharmaceutically relevant molecules. Here, we demonstrate a one-step protocol toward biologically active isochromans through the Oxa-Pictet cyclization involving both aromatic aldehydes, including vanillin, and aliphatic aldehydes in combination with lignin-derivable homovanillyl alcohol

The increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics highlights the need for innovative bioactive packaging systems. This study aimed to develop agar-based biodegradable films co-incorporating deep eutectic solvents (DES) and a DES-extracted, polyphenol-rich matcha extract. Matcha extracts were obtained via ultrasonic-assisted extraction using binary and ternary DES, and their phenolic profiles and quantities were determined by LC-HRMS. During film casting, DES and the DES-extracted matcha were directly incorporated into the agar matrix, with DES simultaneously servin

Deep eutectic solvents (DES), a new generation of (green) solvents, are increasingly used in enzymatic reactions as stabilization media. However, the roles of individual components and water content remain poorly understood. We investigated the activating and thermostabilizing effects of various DES compositions and their water dilutions on immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica. Our results show that enzyme thermostabilization strongly depends on both factors. Certain hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) and acceptor (HBA) combinations act synergistically even at high dilutions, while others exhib

Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence was used to investigate the solvation and rotational dynamics of coumarin 153 (C153) and coumarin 343 (C343) in binary solutions of methanol and glyceline, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of a 1:2 molar ratio of choline chloride and glycerol. Time-resolved Stokes shifts were used to quantify the solvation dynamics and were found to be biexponential for both C153 and C343 with nearly identical integral solvation times. The solvation times were also found to be weakly dependent upon solution viscosity, and a power law exponent of p = 0.18 was fo

This study presents the potential role of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in a lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis reaction as a co-solvent in an aqueous solution given by a phosphate buffer. Ammonium salts, such as choline chloride, were paired with hydrogen bond donors, such as urea, 1,2,3-propanetriol, and 1,2 propanediol. The hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl laureate was carried out with the lipase Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB) as a reaction model to evaluate the solvent effect and tested in different DES/buffer phosphate mixtures at different % w/w. The results showed that two mixtures of different

In this paper, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES)-based for liquid phase microextraction (LPME) is proposed for the isolation of different psychoactive substances in water and biological fluids followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The NADES composition was optimized (L-menthol:octanoic acid, 1:2 M ratio) prior to the study of the extraction conditions such as sample and elution volumes, obtaining up to 16-fold preconcentration factor. Next, the quality parameters were studied including linearity from LOQs (0.0006-0.05 μg L-1) to 100 μg L-1, precision value

The nature of the interaction between deep eutectic solvents (DESs), formed by ChCl and glycerol, and SO2 has been systematically investigated using the M06-2X density functional combined with cluster models. Block-localized wave function energy decomposition (BLW-ED) analysis shows that the interaction between SO2 and DESs is dominated by a charge transfer interaction. After this interaction, the SO2 molecule becomes negatively charged, whereas the ChCl-glycerol molecule is positively charged, which is the result of Lewis acid-base interaction. The current result affords a theoretical proof t

Apples and pears are widely consumed, polyphenol-rich fruits, yet whole-fruit extraction using green solvents remains underexplored relative to by-product-focused approaches. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) were investigated as green extraction media for polyphenols from apple and pear. NADES were characterized (FTIR, DSC, viscosity, density) and extracts were evaluated for polyphenol content and profile (HPLC, LC-MS/MS), antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS, square-wave voltammetry) and cytotoxicity. Hydrophilic choline chloride-based NADES significantly enhanced polyphenol recovery compar

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) derived from choline chloride (ChCl) have attracted significant interest as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional solvents. However, their wider industrial application is often limited by high viscosity, which is strongly affected by temperature, water content, and the composition of hydrogen-bond donors (HBD). In this study, a new parametric correlation is presented for estimating the viscosity of aqueous ChCl-based DESs over broad composition and temperature ranges. The model combines the Arrhenius viscosity framework with the Grunberg-Nissan mixi

Controlling ice recrystallization and water dynamics is critical for frozen food quality, while conventional cryoprotectants primarily rely on colligative effects and provide limited molecular-level regulation of ice formation. Amino acid-based antifreeze natural deep eutectic solvents (AF-NADES) composed of glycerol, L-proline, and L-arginine were developed to modulate water and ice behavior through multivalent hydrogen-bond interactions. Among the formulations, the ternary glycerol-proline-arginine system (GPR) exhibited the strongest antifreeze performance, maintaining ice crystal areas bel

Bioactive compounds from plants are highly valued due to their functional properties and health benefits; however, their chemical labile often results in significant degradation after extraction and during storage. While natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been widely investigated as green extraction media, increasing evidence indicates that their role extends beyond solubilization, as they can act as stabilizing matrices that modulate degradation pathways. In this context, this review critically examines the dual functionality of NADES as both extraction and stabilization systems, wit

Ammonia (NH3) is a valuable resource for agriculture and a promising carbon-neutral hydrogen carrier, but current industrial emissions result in excessive environmental/health impacts. Popular approaches to removal-such as acid/water scrubbing and ionic liquids-are limited due to solvent volatility, costly regeneration, secondary salt wastes, or costly synthesis. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) represent a sustainable and task-specific alternative, characterized by low vapor pressure and the capacity for straightforward, low-cost chemical customization. This review presents a digest of literatur

Solvent engineering plays a crucial role in improving lipase performance in non-aqueous biocatalytic systems, particularly for the efficient and selective production of functional lipids. In this study, choline chloride-glycerol-urea ternary deep eutectic solvents (TDESs) were constructed to regulate the catalytic behavior of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB), and the relationships between solvent physicochemical properties, enzyme conformation, and catalytic performance were systematically evaluated through enzymatic assays, fluorescence spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. Non-aqueous solvents are valuable tools for improving enzyme properties. Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NaDES) recently emerged as an alternative non-aqueous green media, however, further information is required to understand the structure-function changes induced in enzymes. The behavior of a Levansucrase (SacB) and a β-fructofuranosidase (Invertase) was studied in near-anhydrous NaDES. We compare their catalytic activity, optimum temperature (Topt), and thermostability (Tm and t1/2) observed in NaDES with their properties in acetate buffer. The NaDES were selected and designed using the COS

Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl., well known for its detoxifying properties, contains a high concentration of bioactive compounds. The increasing demand for functional foods and age-related therapies emphasizes the importance of enhancing extraction yields using green, sustainable solvents. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were employed to enhance extraction yields, and choline chloride-based NADESs and l-proline-based NADESs were compared with traditional 95% ethanol. HPLC analysis revealed that NADES extracts contained significantly higher quantities of polyphenols, approximately three ti
