Elevated delta power in a maternal UBE3A-deletion pig model of Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of the maternally inherited UBE3A allele and characterized by severe cognitive, motor, and communication impairments. Increased delta (1-4 Hz) activity on electroencephalogram (EEG) is a well-established biomarker of Angelman syndrome in humans and rodent models and is increasingly used as a quantitative outcome measure in therapeutic studies. Whether this electrophysiological phenotype is present in the recently developed pig model has not been evaluated. METHODS: Scalp EEG recordings were obtained from freely movi

Clinical Correlates of Frontal Intermittent Rhythmic Delta Activity Without Structural Brain Lesion.

Frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA), rhythmic slow wave pattern lasting several seconds over the anterior leads of electroencephalography (EEG), has been reported in a wide variety of clinical conditions. We investigated the clinical significance of FIRDA without structural brain lesions. We reviewed 7689 EEGs between October 2017 and September 2019 at a university hospital. Patients (age >18 years) who were confirmed to have "nonsignificant neuroimaging" were examined. Clinical data were retrospectively collected, and the estimated cause was carefully decided. We found 83 FIR

Event-related oscillations in offspring of alcoholics: neurocognitive disinhibition as a risk for alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Event-related oscillations (EROs) are increasingly being used to assess neurocognitive functioning in normal and clinical populations. The current study compares different frequency activities in offspring of alcoholics (OA) and in normal control subjects (NC) to examine whether the OA group exhibits any abnormality in oscillatory activity while performing a Go/NoGo task. METHODS: The S-transform algorithm was employed to decompose the electroencephalographic (EEG) signals into different time-frequency bands, and the oscillatory responses in the P300 time window (300-700 milliseco

Brain electrical source differences between depressed subjects and healthy controls.

Many brain regions show metabolic and perfusion abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD), including anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortices. Some of these same areas also show abnormal function with low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA). However, LORETA results are not always consistent across studies, nor with findings from other imaging modalities. These discrepancies may be due, among other factors, to the sensitivity of EEG source localization to different electrode montages. Thirty-six channel EEG was collected from healthy controls and age- and gender-matched unme

Non-invasive blood pressure monitoring with an oscillometric brachial cuff: impact of arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia-induced beat-to-beat variability of blood pressure (BP) is deemed to hinder the reliability of non-invasive oscillometric measurements (NIBP) but few data support this belief. We assessed the impact of arrhythmia on a NIBP device never tested for this purpose. We compared, in intensive care unit patients with and without arrhythmia, the agreement between three pairs of NIBP (Infinity™ Delta monitor, Dräger medical systems) and invasive readings. For systolic, diastolic and mean BP, the mean bias between NIBP and invasive measurements was not higher, in 89 patients with arrhythmia, t

Assessment of the central chemosensitivity in man under transient or progressive hypercapnia.

In healthy man, the central chemosensitivity to CO2 was studied after depression of the arterial chemoreflex drive by inhalation of pure oxygen. The effectiveness of the functional decrease of arterial chemoreceptor function was assessed by the delayed hyperventilation which followed transient inhalation of hypercapnic gas mixtures for 3 or 5 breaths in hyperoxic conditions. In such a case the first significant increase in tidal volume (VT) occurred 13.9 +/- 3.2 (SE) sec later than the early change in this variable measured in normoxic conditions. The stimulus strength was estimated by the cha

Measures of resting state EEG rhythms for clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease: Recommendations of an expert panel.

The Electrophysiology Professional Interest Area (EPIA) and Global Brain Consortium endorsed recommendations on candidate electroencephalography (EEG) measures for Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. The Panel reviewed the field literature. As most consistent findings, AD patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia showed abnormalities in peak frequency, power, and "interrelatedness" at posterior alpha (8-12 Hz) and widespread delta (< 4 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) rhythms in relation to disease progression and interventions. The following consensus statements were subscribed: (1) St

Correlations between cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, neurocognitive tests, and resting-state electroencephalography (rsEEG) in patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are highly prevalent in people living with HIV (PLWH) despite successful treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). HAND pathogenesis is complex and definitive surrogate biomarkers are not clearly defined. Brain function has been assessed through the evaluation of cortical source rhythms with delta waves associated with neurological impairment. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between EEG cortical sources, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, and neurocognitive tests in PLWH with HAND. PLWH with HAND without sign

Test-retest reliability of resting-state magnetoencephalography power in sensor and source space.

Several studies have reported changes in spontaneous brain rhythms that could be used as clinical biomarkers or in the evaluation of neuropsychological and drug treatments in longitudinal studies using magnetoencephalography (MEG). There is an increasing necessity to use these measures in early diagnosis and pathology progression; however, there is a lack of studies addressing how reliable they are. Here, we provide the first test-retest reliability estimate of MEG power in resting-state at sensor and source space. In this study, we recorded 3 sessions of resting-state MEG activity from 24 hea

Functional mapping to reveal slow conduction and substrate progression in atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: The aim of our study was to analyse the response to short-coupled atrial extrastimuli to identify areas of hidden slow conduction (HSC) and their relationship with the atrial fibrillation (AF) phenotype. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty consecutive patients with paroxysmal AF and persistent AF (10:10) underwent the first pulmonary vein isolation procedure. Triple short-coupled extrastimuli were delivered in sinus rhythm (SR), and the evoked response was analysed: sites exhibiting double or highly fragmented electrograms (EGM) were defined as positive for HSC (HSC+). The delta of the duration

Dynamic low frequency EEG phase synchronization patterns during proactive control of task switching.

Cognitive flexibility is critical for humans living in complex societies with ever-growing multitasking demands. Yet the low-frequency neural dynamics of distinct task-specific and domain-general mechanisms sub-serving mental flexibility are still ill-defined. Here we estimated phase electroencephalogram synchronization by using inter-trial phase coherence (ITPC) at the source space while twenty six young participants were intermittently cued to switch or repeat their perceptual categorization rule of Gabor gratings varying in color and thickness (switch task). Therefore, the aim of this study

Revisiting epilepsy and the electroencephalogram patterns in Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome is a neurogenetic disorder that severely affects global neurodevelopment due to modifications in the structure or functioning of UBE3A gene. Its prevalence ranges from 1:10,000 to 1:40,000. There are four main genetic types of AS transmission. A maternal deletion in 15q11.2-q13 is the most common type. There are three well-established electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns used as an ancillary tool for AS diagnosis. The main objectives are to scrutinize the EEG patterns in Angelman syndrome, their correlation to different types of seizures and to review the role of the EEG as an

The significance of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology of periodic leg movements in sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) are frequently accompanied by arousals and autonomic activation, but the pathophysiologic significance of these manifestations is unclear. DESIGN: Changes in heart rate variability (HRV), HRV spectra, and electroencephalogram (EEG) spectra associated with idiopathic PLMS were compared with changes associated with isolated leg movements and respiratory-related leg movements during sleep. Furthermore, correlations between electromyographic activity, HRV changes, and EEG changes were assessed. SETTING: Sleep laboratory. PATIENTS: Whole-n

Temporo-spatial stability of complex fractionated atrial electrograms in two distinct and separate episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: Ablation of complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAEs) during atrial fibrillation (AF) has been used as adjunct to contemporary techniques or as an alternative. Temporo-spatial stability of CFAE has been demonstrated in single episodes of AF. We examined temporo-spatial reproducibility of CFAE in two distinct episodes of AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: The left atrium (LA) was mapped using the EnSite system during an episode of induced or spontaneous AF in patients with paroxysmal AF. Sinus rhythm was restored with electrical cardioversion and maintained for 10 min before re-induction of

Brain, interrupted: alpha/delta EEG ratio in survivors of pre- and post-natal adversity.

RESULTS: Young adults born at extremely low birth weight (prenatal adversity; N = 64, Mage = 23.14 years, SDage = 1.26 years) had a lower alpha/delta ratio score compared to normal birth weight controls (N = 76, Mage = 23.60 years, SDage = 1.09 years), while youth exposed to child maltreatment (postnatal adversity; N = 39, Mage = 16.18 years, SDage = 1.15) had a higher alpha/delta ratio compared to controls (N = 23, Mage = 16.00 years, SDage = 1.50 years). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that being exposed to pre- and post-natal adversity may have different long-term consequences on brain de

Theta and delta band activity explain N2 and P3 ERP component activity in a go/no-go task.

OBJECTIVES: Recent work indicates that the feedback negativity and P3 components from gambling feedback tasks can be understood as mixtures of functionally distinct processes occurring separately in theta and delta frequency bands. The current study was conducted to assess whether dissociable processes occurring in the theta and delta bands would similarly account for activity underlying N2 and P3 components in a go/no-go task. METHODS: The current study measured EEG signals from 66 participants during a go/no-go task, and a time-frequency principal components analysis decomposition approach

Comparison of focally induced epileptiform activities in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice by using in vivo EEG recording.

Epilepsy characterized by repeated seizures is influenced by genetic factors. Seizure response of inbred mouse strains changes depending on the variety of stimuli including chemical (e.g., pentylenetetrazole, nicotine, cocaine, NMDA, kainate), physical (e.g., auditory) or electrical. In this study, we compared the susceptibilities of C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice strains to penicillin induced epileptiform activity (a focally induced, experimental epilepsy model), by analyzing the spike onset latency, spike amplitude and spike frequency. The power spectrums of baseline EEGs were also investigated. We

EEG findings during basilar migraine attacks in children.

We present clinical and EEG findings in 4 children with basilar migraine (BM) (three female and one male, age 11 to 13.5 years). All patients had an EEG during the acute attack and a follow-up EEG within 4 to 18 days. In two patients the EEG, done within 4 h of the onset of symptoms (initial stage), showed diffuse polymorphic subdelta-delta activity. In two other children the EEG, performed 16 h after the onset of symptoms, showed delta-theta activity predominant over the occipital regions. Resolution of these abnormalities during follow-up was observed in all patients. We wish to stress the d

[EEG changes in early summer meningoencephalitis].

The nature and extent of EEG changes in 114 patients with tick-borne encephalitis were reported. The diagnosis was confirmed by the clinical picture, as well as the pathological increase in cells in the liquor and serologically by positive Ig-M titres. EEG findings were compared in patients with or without involvement of the brain. The EEG revealed pathological results in 76 patients, whereby the dominant pathological change was frequently occurring synchronous bursts of generalized slow bilateral waves. 12 patients with involvement of the brain all showed pathological EEG changes, a much high

[Periodic EEG discharges of stereotyped morphology].

Clinical course of disease and results of EEG examinations of 6 patients with severe brain disturbances of various aetiology provided grounds for discussion on the phenomenon of periodic stereotyped EEG discharges (PSD) which is of considerable diagnostic value in some cases. The variability in appearance of these discharges, in their form and duration of intervals between them are stressed--the last parameter varied in own material from 0.5 to 8 sec. The appearance of PSD may indicate increased convulsive excitability of the cortical and subcortical structures of the gray matter. The prognost
