Personality disorders in dermatology: A review of patient characteristics, associated dermatologic conditions, and pearls for management.

Personality disorders are characterized by "ego-syntonic" maladaptive behaviors that impair functioning. This contribution outlines the relevant characteristics and approach to patients with personality disorders pertaining to the dermatology setting. For patients with Cluster A personality disorders (paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal), it is crucial to avoid being overly contradictory of eccentric beliefs and to take a straightforward, unemotional approach. Cluster B includes antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders. Promoting safety and boundaries is param

Interpersonal problems across levels of the psychopathology hierarchy.

We examined the relationship between psychopathology and interpersonal problems in a sample of 825 clinical and community participants. Sixteen psychiatric diagnoses and five transdiagnostic dimensions were examined in relation to self-reported interpersonal problems. The structural summary method was used with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales to examine interpersonal problem profiles for each diagnosis and dimension. We built a structural model of mental disorders including factors corresponding to detachment (avoidant personality, social phobia, major depression), in

The efficacy of various modalities of psychotherapy for personality disorders: a systematic review of the evidence and clinical recommendations.

The aim of this paper is to review the level of empirical evidence for four different formats and settings that are available for psychotherapy delivery, i.e., group psychotherapy, out-patient individual psychotherapy, day hospital psychotherapy, and in-patient psychotherapy. The focus is on studies which include a wide range of DSM-IV-TR Axis II personality disorders. The results show that various psychotherapeutic treatments have proven to be efficacious with respect to reducing symptomatology and personality pathology, and improving social functioning in patients with Cluster A, B, C, or no

DSM-III personality disorders among patients with major depression, anxiety disorders, and mixed conditions.

Of 298 mainly nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients between 19 and 59 years of age, a group of patients having either pure major depression, major depression in combination with anxiety disorders, or pure anxiety disorders was extracted. The anxiety disorders were further differentiated in panic and nonpanic anxiety disorders. The groups were compared as to differences in frequency of personality disorders assessed by means of the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders. The mixed major depression/anxiety disorder group appeared to be the most deviant with more severe personality

Relationships between treatments received in the Nottingham Study of Neurotic Disorder over 30 years and personality status.

We compared the drug treatments and health service contacts of anxious and depressed patients separated by personality disturbance in 200 patients over 30 years. Contact details with health professionals at 5, 12 and 30 years were recorded and analysed by multilevel models at all time points. Over 30 years, patients with dependent and anankastic personality disturbance and cothymia (the general neurotic syndrome) were 2.27 times more likely to receive selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and new antidepressants (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.22-4.24), particularly paroxetine, and

Factor structure of self-reported clinical disorders and personality disorders: a review of the existing literature and a factor analytical study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this research is to add to the current understanding of the latent factor structure of personality disorders by performing a review of the existing literature (Study 1) and a factor analytical study on the factor structure and the relationship between self-reported Axis I and Axis II psychopathology (Study 2). DESIGN: The current research (Study 2) is cross-sectional and multicenter. RESULTS: We found support for the assumption that the borderline personality disorder is a multidimensional construct. Second, we found evidence for a single-factor structure of the narcis

Exploring the correlates of suicide attempts among individuals with major depressive disorder: findings from the national epidemiologic survey on alcohol and related conditions.

OBJECTIVE: There are no previous studies describing the correlates of suicide attempts in individuals with major depressive disorder in a nationally representative sample. This study explores the sociodemographic variables, mental disorders, and specific depressive symptoms associated with suicide attempts in depression. METHOD: Data were drawn from Wave 1 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a large (N = 43,093) nationally representative survey of mental illness in the United States conducted between 2001 and 2002. Persons with lifetime major depre

Avoidant personality disorder: current insights.

Avoidant personality disorder (AVPD) is a relatively common disorder that is associated with significant distress, impairment, and disability. It is a chronic disorder with an early age at onset and a lifelong impact. Yet it is underrecognized and poorly studied. Little is known regarding the most effective treatment. The impetus for research into this condition has waxed and waned, possibly due to concerns regarding its distinctiveness from other disorders, especially social anxiety disorder (SAD), schizoid personality disorder, and dependent personality disorder. The prevailing paradigm subs

[Role of personality in eating behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti

[Psychopharmacologic treatment of personality disorders].

There is only a paucity of studies concerning the pharmacological treatment of personality disorders per se. On the other hand the clinical use of medication in these conditions is quite high, although there is no effective psychopharmacological treatment of distinct personality disorders. The psychopharmacological treatment of patients suffering from a personality disorder focuses on distinct symptoms and its comorbidity. Some symptoms could also be associated with other disorders like depression or psychosis, which often makes an exact differentiation of these disorders and a personality dis

Exploring the psychopathological profile of fibromyalgia: insights from the personality assessment inventory and its association with disease impact.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex rheumatic disorder characterized by chronic nociplastic pain and central sensitization. Psychopathological conditions can influence FM symptoms, which worsen their condition. However, not all patients with FM have psychopathological disorders, indicating a heterogeneous population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the psychopathological profile and personality disorders in patients with FM and its relationship impact on this disease. METHODS: An observational and cross-sectional comparative study was conducted with a sample of 90 women, mean age 48.7 years

An examination of the stability of the MMPI Personality Disorder Scales.

Recently, a set of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales for the diagnosis of personality disorders have attracted research attention. As personality disorders are thought to represent long-standing trait disturbances, any measure of these disorders should be stable over time and relatively free from state influences. This study investigated the stability of the MMPI scales in 67 subjects across a brief inpatient treatment for substance abuse. The results indicated high levels of stability across the 3-week treatment period.

[Personality disorders and abstinence from tobacco consumption in a psychological treatment to stop smoking].

The relationship between the presence of personality disorders and the effectiveness of a psychological treatment to stop smoking, measured in terms of abstinence at the end of treatment and at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups was studied. The sample was made up of 202 smokers who received Becoña's psychological treatment called Program to stop smoking . The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) was used to assess personality disorders. Abstinence at the end of treatment and at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups was confirmed by a test of carbon monoxide in exhaled air. The results revealed

Gender weighting of DSM-III-R personality disorder criteria.

This study explored the gender weighting of the diagnostic criteria for personality disorders. Gender weighting was defined in terms of how 33 female and 17 male nonclinicians ranked the diagnostic criteria along a male-female dimension. Although the a priori expectation was that antisocial would be the prototypically masculine personality disorder and histrionic the feminine, the subjects ranked criteria from the sadistic category as the most masculine and those from the dependent category as the most feminine. These results and the subjects' gender weighting of criteria for borderline, obses

Personality disorders and adult attachment dimensions in a mixed psychiatric sample: a multivariate study.

The associations between personality disorders and adult attachment dimensions were assessed in a sample of 487 consecutively admitted psychiatric subjects. Canonical correlation analysis showed that two sets of moderately correlated canonical variates explained the correlations between personality disorders and adult attachment patterns. The first and second attachment variates closely resembled the avoidance and anxiety attachment dimensions, respectively. The first personality disorder variate was mainly characterized by avoidant, depressive, paranoid, and schizotypal personality disorders,
