BACKGROUND: Burnout is a complex psychosocial syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, with significant implications for both mental and physical health. Nursing students appear particularly vulnerable to burnout, which can be associated with somatic symptoms, including gastrointestinal disturbances. Despite existing evidence suggesting correlations between burnout and physical disorders, the interplay between burnout, personality traits, and somatization remains underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relati

INTRODUCTION: Community pharmacists (CPs) are the most accessible healthcare professionals in primary care due to pharmacies' open-door policy and convenience, resulting in high patient and prescription volumes, and numerous free-of-charge consultations. Therefore, they are at high risk for burnout.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to assess the levels of burnout among community pharmacists in Greece, marking the first investigation of its kind within the country. Additionally, this study aimed to explore potential correlations between demographic variables and other health

Burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, is common among healthcare workers, particularly in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs). Longitudinal data from low- and middle-income countries are limited. Repeated cross-sectional surveys were conducted among PICU staff at a Brazilian public hospital from 2020 to 2023 using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Participants were classified into behavioral profiles (engaged, ineffective, overextended, disengaged, burnout). Emotional exhaustion increased from 2.4

We examined the relationship between age, coping, and burnout during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic with nurses in Texas (N = 376). Nurses were recruited through a professional association and snowball sampling methodology for the cross-sectional survey study. Framed in lifespan development theories, we expected that nurse age and experience would be positively correlated with positive coping strategies (e.g., getting emotional support from others) and negatively correlated with negative coping strategies (e.g., drinking and drug use). We also expected age to be negatively related to the em

COVID-19 presented numerous challenges to medical professional's mental, emotional, and physical health, including burnout and secondary trauma. As social workers served as essential and frontline workers during COVID-19, it is important to investigate the effects of the pandemic on professional burnout and secondary trauma responses. A multiracial sample of 163 medical social workers working across four hospital settings responded to a survey addressing burnout and the impact of COVID-19. Medical social workers in this sample reported high levels of emotional exhaustion and personal accomplis

In early March 2020, Italy became the epicenter of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Europe. A different organization of hospital units was required to take care of patients affected by acute respiratory failure caused by COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout in two sub-intensive care units (SICUs) of the COVID-19 hub center of the Lombardia region in Milan (Italy). All nurses and healthcare assistants working in the SICUs during June 2020 were included in the study. Burnout was assessed via the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire. One hundred a

PURPOSE: Studies conducted in the USA, Canada and Denmark have supported the existence of the dissociative PTSD subtype, characterized primarily by symptoms of depersonalization and derealization. The current study aimed to examine the dissociative PTSD subtype in an Eastern European, predominantly female (83.16%) sample, using an extended set of dissociative symptoms.
METHODS: A latent profile analysis was applied to the PTSD and dissociation data from 689 trauma-exposed university students from Slovakia.
RESULTS: Four latent profiles of varying PTSD and dissociation symptomatology were unc

BACKGROUND: Nurses are one of the professional groups most exposed to psychosocial risks. Excessive responsibilities, time pressure, the need to make quick decisions, shift work, lack of adequate rest, contact with death and human suffering - all these factors can significantly affect the mental state and result in the development of health problems among nursing staff.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted among 193 nurses working at the University Clinical Hospital No. 2 of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Participation in the study was anonymous and voluntary. The st

The purpose of this work was to study the relationship between reported traumatic experiences in childhood and positive psychotic symptoms. We hypothesized that dissociative experiences were potential mediators between childhood trauma and hallucinations, but not delusions. The sample comprised 71 patients diagnosed with psychoses. They were assessed with the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES-II; Carlson & Putnam, 1993), a questionnaire on trauma (TQ; Davidson, Hughes, & Blazer, 1990), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS; Kay, Opler, & Lindenmayer, 1988) delusions and halluci

Recent evidence suggests that borderline personality disorder (BPD) is related to reduced size of the parietal lobe. Dissociative symptoms occur in the majority of individuals with BPD. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (3D-MRI) was used to assess volumes of the superior (precuneus, postcentral gyrus) and inferior parietal cortices in 30 young women with BPD who had been exposed to severe childhood sexual and physical abuse and 25 healthy control subjects. Compared with control subjects, BPD subjects had significantly smaller right-sided precuneus (-9%) volumes. The left postcentral gyrus

Firmly held beliefs that have a delusional quality are commonly experienced in those with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and have been reported in those with dissociative identity disorder (DID). However, no study to date has compared delusional belief content and characteristics between these diagnostic groups. This study examined delusional content, and the degree of conviction, preoccupation and distress associated with them in 50 participants with DID and 50 with an SSD exploring also dissociation and childhood trauma as predictors of delusional beliefs. Multivariate analysis of va

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, formally recognizes a dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; PTSD with dissociative symptoms). This nomenclative move will boost empirical and theoretical efforts to further understand the links between dissociation, trauma, and PTSD. This article examines the empirical literature showing that patients with PTSD can be divided into 2 different groups based on their neurobiology, psychological symptom profile, history of exposure to early relational trauma, and depersonalization/derealization symptom

Burnout among rheumatologists is globally prevalent, driven by low personal accomplishment, younger age, dissatisfaction with the specialty, low income, long hours, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Mitigation strategies include addressing modifiable risk factors, implementing organizational measures, investing in well-being, assessing individual grit, and managing workload with virtual care platforms.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, reduced personal accomplishment, and increased depersonalization. Over one-half of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals report substantial burnout, with consequences including decreased empathy and quality of care, increased medical errors, and increased health care costs. Team-based care, common in chronic respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis (CF), may be protective.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the risk of burnout among multidisciplinary CF care teams and does it differ by profession?

High levels of burnout and psychological distress have been reported for healthcare workers, with seemingly worse outcomes after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, to date, scarce evidence has been gathered about the condition of physical therapists. This cross-sectional study investigated the three burnout dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and assessed perceived stress with the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) in a sample of Italian physical therapists with the aim of examining
