BACKGROUND: Although parents may joyfully anticipate the birth of a child, it's impossible for them to know ahead of time just how profoundly their lives will change. Postpartum depression (PPD) can result. While there is a substantial body of research regarding maternal PPD, paternal PPD has received far less attention and is neither adequately understood nor diagnosed. This is exacerbated by outdated but persistent sociocultural masculinity norms and the stigmas around mental health issues.
PURPOSE: This study sought to explore the lived experiences of new fathers with PPD in order to provi

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing postpartum women with bipolar from unipolar depression remains challenging, particularly in obstetrical and primary care settings. The post-birth period carries the highest lifetime risk for the onset or recurrence of Bipolar Disorder (BD). Characterization of differences between unipolar and bipolar depression symptom presentation and severity is critical to differentiate the two disorders.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of a study of 10,000 women screened by phone with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at 4-6 weeks post-birth. Screen-positive mo

PURPOSE: Pregnancy and time period right after labour are connected with some dangerous states, such as: pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), which afflict 6-10 % of pregnant women and mood disorders where postpartum depression occurs among 10-15 % of women after labour and so-called baby blues afflicts around 43 % of them. Scientists tried to link those diseases which afflicts thousands of women per year, and the linking factor appears to be methyldopa which is the first choice treatment of PIH. Recent study showed that 778 % of pregnant women treated with methyldopa suffered to postpartum d

This study describes postpartum depression rates and risk factors for mothers with infants with cleft lip and/or palate as postpartum depression has been associated with a range of negative maternal and child outcomes. A retrospective chart review from August 2009 to May 2015 included medical diagnoses, demographics, receipt of prenatal diagnosis, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Mothers (N = 206) had infants (59.2% male; mean age in weeks 5.1 ± 6.9) with isolated cleft lip (18%), cleft palate (22.8%), or cleft lip and palate (59.2%). Mothers ranged from 16 to 45 years old

PURPOSE: Prepregnancy obesity and weight changes accompanying pregnancy (gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention) may be associated with risk of maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy and in the postpartum. The few studies that have examined these relationships report conflicting findings.
METHODS: We studied pregnant (n = 2112) and postpartum (n = 1686) women enrolled in Project Viva. We used self-reported prepregnancy and postpartum weight and measured prenatal weight to calculate prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain (GWG), and postpartum weight

OBJECTIVE: To examine which psychosocial risk factors are predictors of symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) and whether home visit services are associated with decreased reports of symptoms of PPD.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of observational data from the 2012 to 2013 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS).
PARTICIPANTS: A national sample with data from more than 30,000 births from 41 states.
METHODS: To account for unequal probabilities of selection, PRAMS-produced survey weights were incorporated in all percentage estimates, all chi-square tests, and an overall logistic r

INTRODUCTION: Corporal punishment is closely related to physical abuse of children and is associated with several negative characteristics and experiences in children and youths. This study examined the relative unique contribution of 6 variables (social support, socioeconomic status, depression, self-efficacy, knowledge of child development, and history of postpartum depression) to maternal corporal punishment of children.
METHOD: A sample of 76 mothers was dichotomized into those who never spanked or hit with an object and those who have spanked or hit with an object. The mothers were recru

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mental health disorder affecting 10% to 15% of postpartum women worldwide. Pre-eclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that has been identified as a significant factor for PPD due to its vascular dysfunction, systemic inflammation and neurobiological alterations. The neuroinflammatory mechanisms common to both pre-eclampsia and PPD, that contribute to depressive symptoms include elevated proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha), activation of the kynurenine pathway, and oxidative stress. To critically evaluate Wu e

Background/Objectives: The presence of autoimmune thyroiditis was found to be associated with an increased prevalence of sexual dysfunction. Women's sexual health was not investigated in postpartum disorders of the thyroid gland. The aim of this study was to assess female sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in postpartum thyroiditis. Methods: This study compared four groups of non-lactating women who gave birth within 12 months before the beginning of the study: women with postpartum thyroiditis and overt hypothyroidism (group A), women with postpartum thyroiditis and subclinical hypoth

Postpartum sleep disruption is a risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD) as well as a potential treatment target. In the first 6 months after delivery, when the risk of PPD is greatest, fragmented maternal sleep is most often related to necessary infant night feedings. Clinicians' conversations about planning for and navigating postpartum sleep should include questions about patient expectations, cultural traditions, and available support. For women at high risk of PPD, or with moderate to severe PPD or other symptoms of mental illness, protecting one 4-5 hour period of consolidated nightt

Depression, anxiety and psychotic disorders are common perinatal mental health disorders in the postpartum period. Depressive symptoms that occur postpartum are also present in the prenatal period in 50% of patients. Risk factors for the development of postpartum depression include poor relationship with the partner, lack of social support, mother's low socioeconomic status and multiparity. It has been determined that reproductive hormones change significantly during peripartum. Progesterone is one of these hormones and acts on the central nervous system starting from the fetal period; neuroge

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression affects 14% of pregnant individuals and is a leading cause of preventable maternal mortality. Complications of pregnancy, such as preterm labor or pre-eclampsia, may require hospitalization for close monitoring and management. The impact of an antenatal hospitalization during pregnancy on postnatal depression remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether hospital admission during pregnancy was associated with postpartum depressive symptoms in individuals who were enrolled in a collaborative care model and to evaluate whether enrollment in the collabora

Negative experiences with childbirth might have a negative impact on a woman's overall health, including a higher risk of postpartum depression. The aim of the study was to examine the association between birth satisfaction and the risk of postpartum depression (PPD). A 30-item version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were used, as well as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The study included 584 women (mean age 30.6 ± 4.9), 2 to 4 days postpartum. In the regression model, the negative effect of birth satisfaction on the risk of postpartu

INTRODUCTION: Women in prison experience high rates of mental and physical health problems, and pregnant and postpartum women in prison may be particularly vulnerable. Very few studies have examined depressive symptoms among women who are pregnant and give birth in prison. We assessed depressive symptoms longitudinally from pregnancy into the postpartum period in a sample of 58 women who gave birth in prison. We also considered whether incarceration-related factors (length of time incarcerated while pregnant, remaining length of sentence to serve after birth) were associated with depressive sy

CONTEXT: While correlations have been demonstrated between postpartum depression and psychosocial and circumstantial risk factors, some evidence exists for a similar relationship between postpartum depression and thyroid measures.
OBJECTIVE: To search at 4 weeks postpartum for correlations of numerical scores on a postnatal depression screening tool and thyroid measures.
METHODS: Subjects took the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) prenatally and at 4 weeks postpartum. Participants were also given blood tests for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine4, thyroid peroxidase
