The expression of cytokeratin in keratocystic odontogenic tumor, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst and dermoid cyst.

The epithelial lining of odontogenic keratocysts exhibits either parakeratosis or orthokeratosis. In 2005, the WHO classified odontogenic keratocysts with parakeratosis as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT). Odontogenic keratocysts with orthokeratosis were not classified as odontogenic tumors, but instead referred to as orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC). To clarify the difference between these two lesions, we investigated their biological characteristics using immunohistochemical studies for cytokeratins (CK) in KCOT and OOC as well as in dentigerous cysts (DC), radicular cysts (RC)

Dermoid Cysts of the Asterion: An Unusual Location for Unusual Dermoids, Radiological Findings and Neurosurgical Implications.

Asterion is an uncommon site for lesions, especially dermoid cysts. We report a case series of three asterional intracranial dermoid cysts, which, to the best of our knowledge, have never been described before. Patients presented with non-specific symptoms and underwent surgical excision of the lesions. It is crucial to correctly diagnose intracranial masses and to identify their relationships with surrounding anatomical structures, especially if the location is unusual as the asterion, to plan surgery. The challenge of this tumor location is to preserve the venous drainage system during surgi

A Case of Dermoid Cyst Arising in the Temporal Lobe.

Intracranial dermoid cysts are rare congenital lesions that result from abnormal sequestration of ectodermal cells during neural tube formation. These tumors are especially rare in lateral areas such as in the temporal lobe. In this study, we report a case of dermoid cyst located in the right temporal lobe. A 50-year-old man was referred for further treatment of a tumor. CT revealed a low-density mass lesion in the right temporal lobe, with calcification. MRI showed the lesion with high signal intensity on diffusion-weighted imaging, high-low mixed signal intensity on T1-weighted imaging, and

Midsternal bump: an infrequent localization of dermoid cysts.

A 5-month-old boy was evaluated for an unusually large presternal bump present since birth. The ultrasound examination revealed a well-defined soft tissue mass with an oval shape. The lesion demonstrated a regular and well-demarcated outline, with an upper margin that was thinned and inserted into the upper skin plane; the content was anechoic with a small echogenic formation, mobile with changes in the patient's decubitus. The histologic diagnosis was dermoid cyst. Although dermoid cysts are commonly seen in the midline, the midsternal location, found in our patient, is rare. Dermoid cysts ca

The spectrum of orbital dermoid cysts and their surgical management.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe a spectrum of surgical approaches to orbital dermoid cysts, influenced by the anatomic location of the expanded cyst wall and other factors. METHODS: In this retrospective case series, we reviewed cases of dermoid cysts surgically excised during a 39-year period (1977-2016). Cysts were categorized according to the location of the expanded cyst wall and other considerations. The impact of these factors on surgical management was determined. RESULTS: We identified six dermoid cyst growth patterns based on the anatomic location of the expanded c

Dermoid Cyst of the Parotid Gland: A Rare Entity.

BACKGROUND: Antigen-induced bronchopulmonary hyper-reactivity (BHR) is generally associated with eosinophilia. It involves cytokines produced by Th2 lymphocytes, including IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13, which are implicated in IgE production, eosinophil differentiation and attraction, and related events relevant to allergic inflammation, whose mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms by which Th2 cytokines mediate eosinophilia and subsequent BHR using ovalbumin (OVA)-immunized and OVA-challenged IL-4Ralpha-/- and IL-4-/- mice, which fail to transduce and/or to produce IL-4 a

Brainstem dermoid cyst rupture with hydrocephalus in a child.

Intracranial dermoid cysts are ectodermal lesions of embryological origin. They are of slow progression and symptoms associated with unruptured cysts are most commonly due to mass effect. However, a potential rupture in the ventricular system is rare and can cause meningitis, seizures and hydrocephalus. Hereby, we report a case of a 12-year-old boy presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus due to brainstem dermoid cyst rupture.

Different locations of dermoid cysts in the orbital region.

BACKGROUND: Dermoid cysts are frequent unilateral congenital benign tumors that can be found at different locations throughout the body. In the orbital region, dermoid cysts occur predominantly in the supero-temporal quadrant. However, different orbital locations are possible, making this entity an important differential diagnosis for orbital tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 23 consecutive patients operated in our institution between 2005 and 2014 for orbital tumors that were diagnosed as congenital dermoid or epidermoid cysts. RESULTS: There were 21 de

Transpterygoid approach to a dermoid cyst in pterygopalatine fossa.

Objective To describe a case of dermoid cyst arising from the pterygopalatine fossa and review the literature. Methods We report a case of a 23-year-old man who suffered a car accident 2 years before otolaryngologic attendance. He had one episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizure and developed a reduction of visual acuity of the left side after the accident. Neurologic investigation was performed and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an incidental finding of a heterogeneous ovoid lesion in the pterygopalatine fossa, hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging. Results Endoscopic sinus surgery with

Dermoid cyst in the facial nerve--a unique diagnosis.

Facial nerve paralysis in children may occur as a complication of infections, trauma, or rarely from benign or malignant tumors of the facial nerve. We present the first reported case of a dermoid tumor in the facial nerve causing facial paralysis in a child. Case report at a tertiary Children's Hospital. A 9-month-old was referred to our institution for evaluation of persistent, complete right sided facial paralysis three months after receiving a diagnosis of Bell's palsy. A workup at our institution including MRI and CT revealed marked widening of the facial canal in the mastoid segment cons

Percutaneous drainage and ablation of orbital dermoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Vision-threatening intraorbital dermoid cysts have traditionally been treated by complete surgical resection. Such radical surgical intervention may pose serious risks to both vision acuity and cosmesis. We describe a novel, minimally invasive approach for the treatment of orbital dermoid cysts. METHODS: This is an interventional retrospective case series. Two patients (17 and 4 years) presented with large intraorbital dermoid cysts. The first patient had a dumbbell-shaped lesion involving the temporalis fossa and superotemporal orbit. The second patient had a large, superior intr

Intracranial midline dermoid and epidermoid cysts in children.

OBJECT: Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are rare space-occupying lesions of the central nervous system. Although characterized by a slow growth rate, they are often associated with serious complications. Surgery is the only effective treatment, and radical resection of the entire cyst, whenever possible, generally succeeds in achieving a cure. Authors of large series have only occasionally reported on pediatric cases, and these reports often lack a specific analysis of those cerebral midline lesions. METHODS: The authors report on the treatment of 19 patients (16 with intracranial intradural der

Dermoid cysts, gliomas, and encephaloceles: evaluation and treatment.

The fronto-orbitonasal malformations of encephaloceles, dermoid sinus cysts, and gliomas represent a continuum of neuroectodermal anomalies. The differentiation between them and other similar-appearing lesions is essential for effective management to proceed. Obtaining a reliable history, completing a careful physical examination, and obtaining accurate radiographic documentation represent the first steps. Establishing the timing, staging, and specific surgical techniques for management of a fronto-orbitonasal encephalocele remains as much an art as a science.

Submucosal dermoid cyst of the rectum: report of a case.

Despite the relatively common incidence of sacrococcygeal dermoids, rectal cysts are uncommon. We report the case of a submucosal dermoid cyst occurring in the rectum. A 30-year-old woman visited the Gynecology Department because of pregnancy. A pelvic tumor was accidentally found during the checkup after miscarriage. A barium enema showed an anterior shift of the rectum by the presence of the tumor. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor located posterior to the rectum occupying almost the entire pelvic cavity, and the tumor was resected. The tumor was located in

Excision of ovarian dermoid cyst by laparoscopy and by laparotomy.

OBJECTIVES: Our purpose was to evaluate the efficacy of laparoscopic ovarian dermoid cystectomy and to compare the operative course, postoperative course, and complications between the laparoscopy and the laparotomy techniques. STUDY DESIGN: The safety and efficacy of laparoscopic ovarian dermoid cystectomy were evaluated in 40 women. Twenty-nine of 40 patients underwent laparoscopic excision of a solitary dermoid cyst without any additional procedure. The operative course, the postoperative course, and complications among these 29 women were compared with those of 26 other women who underwen

Orbital dermoid cysts showing conjunctival epithelium.

The orbital area is one of the most common sites for dermoid cysts. Most often these cysts are lined by keratinizing squamous epithelium; however, dermoid cysts may rarely be lined with conjunctival epithelium. We describe such a cyst and the features that distinguish it from other dermoid cysts.

A large dermoid cyst of the neck. Case report.

An elderly patient presented with a large asymptomatic submental swelling which had been present for about fifteen years. The clinical diagnosis was a dermoid cyst and the lesion was removed in toto. Histological examination confirmed the clinical diagnosis. Unless such lesions are very large and cause displacement of the tongue, there is usually no associated dyspnoea, dysphagia or dysphonia.

Sebaceous tumors arising in ovarian dermoid cysts.

The clinicopathologic features of five cases of sebaceous tumors arising in ovarian dermoid cysts and of three previously reported cases are reviewed. They occurred in women with an average age of 58 years and were classified as sebaceous adenoma (five cases), basal cell carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation (two cases), and sebaceous carcinoma (one case). Follow-up information was available for all cases. One patient with basal cell carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation had a pelvic recurrence 2 1/2 years after diagnosis. In no other case did the sebaceous tumor recur or metastasize dur
