Feasibility and Efficacy of Brief DBT Intervention for Adults With Borderline Personality Disorder/Traits: A Systematic Review.

Standard, comprehensive dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) has been well established as an effective and evidence-based treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). As a comprehensive and longer term treatment (e.g., 6-12 months or more), DBT can be challenging to implement in resource-strapped public healthcare settings. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine existing literature to assess the efficacy and feasibility of abbreviated DBT programs (16 weeks or fewer in duration, no more than one group session per week). Literature searches yielded 22 studies (20 journal a

An Update on Evidence-Based Psychosocial Treatments for Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Eating disorders are relatively common and serious disorders in adolescents. However, there are few controlled psychosocial intervention studies with this younger population. This review updates a previous Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology review published in 2008. The recommendations in this review were developed after searching the literature including PubMed/Medline and employing the relevant medical subject headings. In addition, the bibliographies of book chapters and treatment guideline articles were reviewed; last, colleagues were asked for suggested additional source

Treatment outcomes of dialectical behaviour therapy for adolescents presenting with characteristics of borderline personality disorder: A naturalistic study.

This naturalistic study investigated treatment outcomes of Dutch dialectical behaviour therapy for adolescents (DDBT-A) in a sample of 93 adolescents (95.4% female, mean age = 16.20 years) presenting with borderline characteristics, treated at Levvel (a Dutch mental health institution). From baseline to posttreatment significant decreases were found on severity of the borderline symptoms, passive coping style, internalizing and externalizing behavioural problems, and a significant increase on self-worth. Overall, three different therapy formats (outpatient, part-time therapy, and day therapy)

Evoking Change Through Acceptance and Awareness: A Sysematic Review of Third-Wave Therapies for Substance Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major global health burden, and third-wave therapies that target transdiagnostic processes such as psychological flexibility and mindfulness have emerged as promising options. This systematic review synthesized evidence on third-wave interventions for adults with diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorder (DSM)-defined SUDs. METHODS: A comprehensive search of seven databases (2014-2025) identified randomized and non-randomized studies of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), related mindfulness-based programs, and dialectical behav

Using GIMME to model the emotional context of suicidal ideation based on clinical data: From research to clinical practice.

Research and clinical experience highlight the variability of suicidal ideation (SI) within and between individuals. Although the idiographic emotional contexts in which SI occurs may offer explanations for its dynamic nature, most statistical methods focus on nomothetic patterns, making it difficult to advance our understanding of SI. Furthermore, the gap between nomothetic methods and a need for idiographic understanding of SI poses challenges to translating empirical knowledge into individualized clinical treatment. Group iterative multiple model estimation (GIMME) is a method that may brid

An evaluation of value-based outcomes for women admitted to a dialectical behaviour therapy integrated practice unit: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: An earlier evaluation (Fox et al., ) highlighted reductions in risk behaviours and restrictive practices for women admitted to low secure dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) unit. Since then, a value-based healthcare model has been adopted. AIMS: To explore changes in health, social and psychological functioning, risk, quality of life, and in incidents of violence and restrictive practices, over the initial 12-month period of admission to a specialist DBT service. METHOD: Data were extracted from electronic clinical records for 41 women with emotionally unstable personality disor

Adolescent experience of radically open dialectical behaviour therapy: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RO DBT) is a novel transdiagnostic treatment that targets 'maladaptive overcontrol'; a transdiagnostic cluster of traits associated with excessive emotional and behavioural inhibitory control. Outcomes are promising for adults with a range of psychiatric disorders. No study to date has explored the adolescent experience of RO DBT. METHODS: Of the 25 eligible adolescents who received RO DBT between March 2015 and April 2017, 15 (14-17 years) consented and completed a semi-structured interview about their experience of treatment within 1

Borderline Personality Disorder: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects approximately 0.7% to 2.7% of adults in the US. The disorder is associated with considerable social and vocational impairments and greater use of medical services. OBSERVATIONS: Borderline personality disorder is characterized by sudden shifts in identity, interpersonal relationships, and affect, as well as by impulsive behavior, periodic intense anger, feelings of emptiness, suicidal behavior, self-mutilation, transient, stress-related paranoid ideation, and severe dissociative symptoms (eg, experience of unreality of one's self or su

How to integrate physiological data from wearables in treatment of personality disorders: a narrative review.

In recent years, stress-monitoring innovations using wearable technology have entered the market. One innovation is biocueing, a process where patients receive real-time feedback on passive monitoring of significant changes in their physiological data, such as (additional) heart rate, heart rate variability or skin conductance. This technology offers potential for patients with borderline personality disorder, as they often report severe stress, difficulties in emotion regulation and low levels of emotional- and body awareness. Yet, currently there is no clear direction on when and how to fit

Evidence Base Update of Psychosocial Treatments for Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors in Youth: 2018-2024.

OBJECTIVE: This evidence base update investigates the empirical support of psychosocial interventions for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) in youth, focusing on the period since the prior review. METHOD: Two major scientific databases (PsycInfo and PubMed) were systematically searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published or in press between June 1, 2018 and May 31, 2024. RESULTS: The search yielded 11 RCTs new to this update and 1 new SITB outcome to an RCT included in the prior review. Since the prior review, Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DB

Empirically supported psychological treatments: The challenges of comorbid psychiatric and behavioral disorders in people with intellectual disability.

This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on psychological interventions with empirical evidence of efficacy in treating common psychiatric and behavioral disorders in people with intellectual disability (ID) at all stages of their life. We begin with a brief presentation of what is meant by psychiatric and behavioral disorders in this population, along with an explanation of some of the factors that contribute to the increased psychosocial vulnerability of this group to present with these problems. We then conduct a review of empirically supported psychological therapies used to treat

Mindfulness as taught in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: A scoping review.

This scoping review considers 11 studies that have focussed on the effect of teaching the mindfulness element of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) on clinical outcomes. These articles utilized either mindfulness skills as embedded into the full DBT-Skills programme or a stand-alone mindfulness skills module (DBT-M), as treatment for clinical populations. The review of the research found that clinical application of mindfulness as taught in DBT leads to increases in self-reported mindfulness-especially non-judgemental awareness along with psychological measures that suggests an increase in mi

In-session reflective functioning in psychotherapies for borderline personality disorder: The emotion regulatory role of reflective functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The capacity for understanding mental states (reflective functioning; RF) is considered essential for self-growth, social learning, and emotion regulation. Impaired RF is thought to play a central role in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We examined whether asking patients to consider mental states in-session has a down-regulatory effect on emotional arousal in treatments for BPD. METHOD: Early-, middle- and late-phase videotaped sessions from a randomized-controlled trial of transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP; n = 30), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT; n = 29), and sup

Mindfulness in Borderline Personality Disorder: Decentering Mediates the Effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Oral dapsone has been available for over 60 years and has been used to treat severe acne vulgaris; however, the oral formulation is known to cause dose-dependent haematological reactions and is currently indicated only for diseases such as dermatitis herpetiformis and Hansen's disease. A gel formulation of dapsone was recently developed to treat acne vulgaris. As dapsone is administered topically, it was expected that systemic absorption would be considerably lower than that observed with oral dapsone therapy, thereby avoiding any adverse haematological effects. OBJECTIVE: To repo

Psychotherapies for borderline personality disorder: a focused systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A recently updated Cochrane review supports the efficacy of psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder (BPD). AIMS: To evaluate the effects of standalone and add-on psychotherapeutic treatments more concisely. METHOD: We applied the same methods as the 2020 Cochrane review, but focused on adult samples and comparisons of active treatments and unspecific control conditions. Standalone treatments (i.e. necessarily including individual psychotherapy as either the sole or one of several treatment components) and add-on interventions (i.e. complementing any ongoing individual B

Experiences of mothers with borderline personality disorder following an intervention to support mother-infant relationships: "more tools in my toolbox".

Motherhood is inherently demanding, and some of these demands may be amplified for women with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The exacerbation of BPD symptoms from parenting-related stressors can have adverse impacts on mother-infant relationships and infant development. This qualitative study explores Australian mothers' views of the impacts of mother-infant dialectical therapy plus (MI-DBT+). MI-DBT+ is an innovative therapeutic intervention which integrates mother-infant dialectical behavior Therapy (MI-DBT), a known effective intervention for the mental health of mothers with BPD, w

Less is more: Decreasing the frequency of maladaptive coping predicts improvements in DBT more consistently than increasing the frequency of adaptive coping.

It is well-established that participation in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) results in patients using adaptive coping strategies more frequently. Although coping skill instruction may be necessary to promote decreases in symptoms and behavioral targets in DBT, it is unclear if the frequency with which patients use adaptive coping skills leads to these outcomes. Alternatively, it is possible that DBT also leads patients to use maladaptive strategies less frequently and that these reductions more consistently predict improvements in treatment. We recruited 87 participants with elevated emoti
