Plant-based whole-food diets are feasible during autologous stem cell transplantation and are associated with dose-dependent microbiome modulation: Results from a pilot clinical trial.

Plant-based dietary strategies may offer a tractable approach to mitigating microbiome disruption and improving outcomes in patients undergoing autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT) for multiple myeloma, a population in whom intestinal dysbiosis has been linked to infectious complications and inferior survival. We conducted a single-arm study to test the feasibility and biological activity of a high-fiber, plant-based, whole-food meal delivery intervention during the peri-transplant period. Adults with multiple myeloma (n = 22) received fully prepared, plant-based meals for

Neurocognition and food cue-related brain reactivity after fiber supplementation within a high-protein, plant-based diet in individuals with overweight and prediabetes: A randomized-controlled trial (the DISTAL-study).

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of obesity and related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and neurocognitive dysfunction, warrants sustainable and effective strategies for treatment and prevention. A healthy diet, containing dietary fibers that are fermented by the gut microbiome, produces short-chain fatty acids, among other metabolites, known to alleviate insulin resistance. SCFA also may protect against neurocognitive decline and increase satiety through food-reward-related pathways of the gut-brain axis, thereby contributing to sustainable dietary habits and counteract

Plant-based diets, gut microbiota, blood metabolome, and risk of colorectal, liver, and pancreatic cancers: results from a large prospective cohort study of predominantly low-income Americans.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets have been advertised for environmental and health benefits. Their effects on cancer risk, gut microbial, and blood metabolomic profiles remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We investigated plant-based diets in relation to cancer incidence as well as gut microbial composition and blood metabolites in the Southern Community Cohort Study. METHODS: Included in the analysis were 71,533 participants. Habitual dietary intake assessed at baseline (2002-2009) was used to derive the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), and unhealthy plant-ba

Impact of a whole food, plant-based diet on LDL-cholesterol and cardiovascular risk factors in adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia: a randomized, two-period, two-treatment, crossover, fully controlled feeding trial.

Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disorder that accelerates atherosclerosis and leads to premature cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Whole food, plant-based diets (WFPB) are recommended worldwide for their cardioprotective properties but evidence regarding their effects in HeFH management remains unavailable. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a WFPB, in place of a standard American diet (SAD), on LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) (primary outcome) and other CVD risk factors among adults with HeFH. In this randomized, two-period, two-treatment, crossover, controlled feed

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials of substituting soymilk for cow's milk and intermediate cardiometabolic outcomes: understanding the impact of dairy alternatives in the transition to plant-based diets on cardiometabolic health.

BACKGROUND: Dietary guidelines recommend a shift to plant-based diets. Fortified soymilk, a prototypical plant protein food used in the transition to plant-based diets, usually contains added sugars to match the sweetness of cow's milk and is classified as an ultra-processed food. Whether soymilk can replace minimally processed cow's milk without the adverse cardiometabolic effects attributed to added sugars and ultra-processed foods remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, to assess the effect of substituting soymilk for cow's milk a

The 3V score and joint associations of low ultra-processed food, biodiverse and plant-based diets on colorectal cancer risk: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study.

BACKGROUND: Diet may modify colorectal cancer risk. We investigated the associations of three dietary patterns, ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption, healthy plant-based food consumption, and food biodiversity, separately and combined into a "3V" score with risk of colorectal cancer. METHODS: This study used data from the prospective European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort, which recruited participants between 1992, and 2000, from 23 centres in ten European countries. The 3V score was developed by standardising and summing the healthy plant diet index (hPD

Gut morphology and hepatic oxidative status of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles fed plant feedstuffs or fishmeal-based diets supplemented with short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides and xylo-oligosaccharides.

The effects of short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scFOS) and xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) on gut morphology and hepatic oxidative status were studied in European sea bass juveniles weighing 60 g. Fish were fed diets including fishmeal (FM diets) or plant feedstuffs (PF diets; 30 FM:70 PF) as main protein sources (control diets). Four other diets were formulated similar to the control diets but including 1 % scFOS or 1 % XOS. At the end of the trial, fish fed PF-based diets presented histomorphological alterations in the distal intestine, whereas only transient alterations were observed in the

Transition to dietary plant-based proteins requires functional liver GDH for proper control of ammonia and energy homeostasis.

Plant-based diet is growingly recommended, although switching the source of proteins from animal to plant regimen requires metabolic adaptations. According to its pivotal function in bridging amino acids and glucose homeostasis, we investigated the role of liver GDH in short-term adaptation to plant versus animal dietary proteins keeping the same spectrum of macronutrients. Control and Hep-Glud1-/- mice lacking liver GDH were fed for 4 days with either animal- or plant-based diets. Hepatic GDH was upregulated in control mice eating animal proteins compared to mice under the plant regimen. Glyc

New alternative ingredients and genetic selection are the next game changers in rainbow trout nutrition: a metabolomics appraisal.

The formulation of sustainable fish feeds based on plant ingredients supplemented by alternative ingredients to plant (insect, micro-algae, yeast) and genetic selection of fish for plant-based diets were tested on rainbow trout in two separate experiments. Plant-based diets and corresponding diets supplemented with an ingredient mix: insect, micro-algae and yeast in Experiment A, and insect and yeast in Experiment B were compared to commercial-like diets. In experiment A, the mix-supplemented diet was successful in compensating the altered growth performance of fish fed their respective plant-

Greater Intake of Plant-Based Foods Is Unrelated to the Risk of Endometriosis among Predominantly Omnivorous Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies suggest that diets encouraging a higher intake of fruits and vegetables and a lower intake of red meat are associated with a lower risk of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis. However, no studies have examined whether plant-focused dietary patterns are associated with endometriosis risk. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between 3 plant-based diet indices and the risk of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis in a predominantly omnivorous population. METHODS: We followed 82,084 premenopausal women participating in the Nurses'

Effect of partial replacement of animal protein with plant protein on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes: Rationale, design, and protocol of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) includes pharmacological therapy, lifestyle modification, and dietary interventions, among which plant-based diets have been shown to improve glycemic control and cardiometabolic health. However, few studies have evaluated plant-based approaches that allow modest meat intake while altering the proportion of animal- and plant-derived protein. We are conducting a randomized clinical trial to assess whether a plant-based dietary pattern with partial substitution of animal protein improves glycemic control in adults with T2DM a

Animal vs plant-based processed foods have different effects on body weight: a secondary analysis of a randomized, cross-over trial.

Mediterranean and vegan diets have been extensively studied for health effects. This secondary analysis assessed animal vs plant-based processed foods. We hypothesized that greater intake of minimally processed plant foods and lower intake of animal foods, particularly processed and ultraprocessed, would be associated with lower body weight. In this randomized crossover trial, 62 overweight adults were randomized to a Mediterranean or low-fat vegan diet for 16 weeks, separated by a 4-week washout. Body weight was the primary outcome. Three-day diet records assessed intake of animal- and plant-

Exploring the Dietary Behaviour of Students Who Limit Their Intake of Animal-Source Foods: Secondary Analysis of a Nationally Representative Undergraduate Student Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Plant-based nutrition is gaining in popularity for many reasons relating to health, sustainability and animal welfare. While there is potential for diets with low or no animal source foods (ASF) to be healthy, this is not necessarily the case. Emerging adults may be at the forefront of a social movement away from ASF in the UK. This age group also have generally poor diets. Modern day plant-based diets, particularly those followed by younger people, may include more convenience foods and less fruit and vegetables than traditional plant-based diets. This study aims to examine whet

A Therapeutic Approach in the Management of Chronic Kidney Disease: Plant-Based Dietary Models and Associated Parameters.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic kidney disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide today. Nutrition and nutrition-related factors have a very important role in both the prevention and management of the disease. Plant-based dietary practices are one of the promising approaches to chronic kidney disease. This review aims to examine the potential benefits and risks of plant-based diet models on symptoms and indices used in diet quality in chronic kidney disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Recently, a growing body of evidence has shown that, unlike animal-based diets, diets rich in plant-based nutri

Attitudes and Barriers Toward Consumption of More Plant-Based Foods Among Danish Patients with Celiac Disease.

Background: Celiac disease (CeD) requires lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). However, there is evidence that a GFD may lead to an unhealthy cardiometabolic risk profile and potentially increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in some patients. Incorporating plant-based foods (primarily derived from plants) into a GFD may offer a solution to improve cardiometabolic health. Thus, this study aimed to identify the attitudes toward and barriers to adopting a more plant-dominant diet among Danish patients with CeD. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to 2861 members of
