A pilot evaluation of simulation-based interprofessional education for occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetic students: improvements in attitudes and confidence.

Many higher education institutions struggle to provide interprofessional practice opportunities for their pre-licensure students due to demanding workloads, difficulties with timetabling, and problems with sourcing suitable placements that provide appropriate practice opportunities. A series of complex unfolding video-based simulation scenarios involving a patient who had experienced a stroke was utilized as a case study for a three-hour interprofessional practice workshop. 69 occupational therapy (OT), speech pathology (SP) and dietetics (DT) students participated in a mixed-methods study com

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON DIABETES : SERIES I. PRODUCTION AND CONTROL OF DIABETES IN THE DOG. 5. VARIOUS FAILURES OF DIETETIC TREATMENT, AND THEIR CAUSES.

1. Practically every detail of clinical diabetes can be reproduced in partially depancreatized animals. The resemblance is made still more exact by the susceptibility of such dogs to acidosis and coma, as will be shown in later papers, and also by the similarity of the anatomic changes in the islands of Langerhans. These animals are therefore useful test objects for a therapeutic investigation. 2. These animals at first show considerable tendency to regain assimilation, comparable to that in the early stages of most human cases of diabetes; and in some instances they recover so as to be able t

"I had your number on speed dial:" A qualitative study of patient experiences of dietetics care and managing nutrition during curative treatment of upper gastrointestinal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Limited research exists on the implementation of nutrition care pathways to provide dietetics care in upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery, particularly from the patient perspective. This study aimed to understand patients' experiences and perceptions of dietetics care provided via a nutrition care pathway, both before and after curative intent surgery. The secondary aim was to explore patients' experiences of self-managing nutrition throughout their treatment trajectory and the impact on quality of life. METHODS: This was a single-centre, prospective phenomenological study. Pati

Predictive validity of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition indicators to diagnose malnutrition tool in hospitalized adults: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The lack of a widely accepted, broadly validated tool for diagnosing malnutrition in hospitalized patients limits the ability to assess the integral role of nutrition as an input and outcome of health, disease, and treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive validity of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) indicators to diagnose malnutrition (AAIM) tool and determine if it can be simplified. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted from August 2019 to September 2022 with 32 hospitals i

Modifications in apoprotein C composition of very low density lipoproteins in type IV hyperlipoproteinemic subjects after dietetic triglyceridemia reduction.

Variations in peptide composition of apoprotein C from very low density lipoproteins were studied in 10 type IV hyperlipoproteinemics, before and after triglyceridemia normalization through appropriate diet. The subjects were sensitive to carbohydrates or alcohol : a reduction or elimination of the inducing nutrient led to a decrease in serum triacylglycerol levels, correlated with an increase in the proportion of apo CII and a decrease in the proportion of apo CIII1. Apo CIII2 was not affected. This led to an increased ratio, apo CII/apo CIII1. The percentage of variation of different lipid (

Position of the American Dietetic Association: nutrition intervention in the treatment of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS).

More than 5 million Americans suffer from eating disorders. Five percent of females and 1% of males have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder. It is estimated that 85% of eating disorders have their onset during the adolescent age period. Although Eating Disorders fall under the category of psychiatric diagnoses, there are a number of nutritional and medical problems and issues that require the expertise of a registered dietitian. Because of the complex biopsychosocial aspects of eating disorders, the optimal assessment and ongoing management of these conditions appears

Consensus statement of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition: indicators recommended for the identification and documentation of pediatric malnutrition (undernutrition).

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, utilizing an evidence-informed, consensus-derived process, recommend that a standardized set of diagnostic indicators be used to identify and document pediatric malnutrition (undernutrition) in routine clinical practice. The recommended indicators include z scores for weight for height/length, body mass index for age, length/height for age, or mid-upper arm circumference when a single data point is available. When two or more data points are available, indicators may also include weight-gain veloc

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial measuring the effect of a dietetic food on dermatologic scoring and pruritus in dogs with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Canine atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common condition that often requires multimodal therapy. Including a diet in the multimodal management of AD may reduce medication doses, saving pet owners money and reducing side effects. The objective of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was to determine if a diet fortified in antioxidants, polyphenols, and omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the clinical signs of AD. Forty client-owned dogs with AD were enrolled in the study and assigned to either an enriched diet (diet B) or control diet (diet A) for 60-days. CADESI-4

Coupling feeding activity, growth rates and molecular data shows dietetic needs of Ciona robusta (Ascidiacea, Phlebobranchia) in automatic culture plants.

The sea squirt Ciona robusta is a model organism characterized by a transparent body, exhibiting peculiar physiologic and evolutionary characters. In vitro fertilization and breeding of sea squirts is possible, in order to preserve consistent genetic pools. However, some aspects of its biology, as the feeding efficiency according to diet quantity and quality, are still scarcely known. Here we test the effects of three experimental diets on survival and growth, to detect physiological and molecular responses to various types of alimentary suspended particles and the effects of feed concentratio

Session 3: Joint Nutrition Society and Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute Symposium on 'Nutrition and autoimmune disease' PUFA, inflammatory processes and rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease manifested by swollen and painful joints, bone erosion and functional impairment. The joint lesions are characterised by infiltration of T lymphocytes, macrophages and B lymphocytes into the synovium and by synovial inflammation involving eicosanoids, cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases. In relation to inflammatory processes, the main fatty acids of interest are the n-6 PUFA arachidonic acid, which is the precursor of inflammatory eicosanoids such as PGE2 and leukotriene B4, and the n-3 PUFA EPA and DHA, which are found

Time-restricted eating versus dietetic guidance on glycaemic outcomes in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes: a non-inferiority randomised clinical trial.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Time-restricted eating (TRE) consolidates daily energy intake to a consistent 6-10 h window. The aim was to assess whether TRE is non-inferior to individualised dietetic guidance (IDG) in changing HbA1c at 4 months in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes. METHODS: In a two-arm, parallel-group, multi-centre randomised, non-inferiority clinical trial at two Australian clinical research institutes, adults at risk of type 2 diabetes (i.e. with overweight or obesity and a score of ≥15 on the Australian type 2 diabetes risk assessment tool) were recruited.
