Development of a droplet digital PCR assay for sensitive detection of porcine circovirus 3.

Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3), a newly emerged circovirus, is associated with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome, reproductive failure and multi-systemic inflammation disease, and is widely distributed in pig populations worldwide. Therefore, developing specific diagnostic assays will be important for controlling this emerging pathogen. In this study, we developed a novel droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay targeting the PCV3 cap gene to improve the sensitivity of PCV3 detection. The established assay is highly specific to PCV3, and does not cross react with other important swine pathogen

Primary health care and family physicians provide frontline care to the dermatology patients during the era of COVID-19: Recommendations and future directions.

COVID-19 has affected those disciplines where close contact is required and where there is no need for urgent care such as the field of dermatology. Due to the contagious nature of the virus, front line health care workers such as family health care physicians and primary health care doctors are using personal protective measures (PPE), which might result in skin disorders. In addition, social distancing has also resulted in the compromise of teaching and learning mainly bedside teaching in the dermatology wards. Moreover, there is also uncertainty about the guidelines different to be followed

Carriage of Malassezia spp. yeasts in Cornish Rex, Devon Rex and Domestic short-haired cats: a cross-sectional survey.

Carriage of Malassezia spp. yeasts in healthy Cornish Rex cats (CRC) was compared with that in Devon Rex (DRC) and Domestic short-haired (DSH) cats. Samples obtained from the left external ear canal, anus and claw fold of digit III of the left fore foot by swabbing, and the axilla and groin using contact plates, were incubated for yeasts on modified Dixon's agar at 32 degrees C for 7 days. Malassezia species were isolated from 90% of the DRC, but from only 39% of the CRC and 50% of the DSH cats. M. pachydermatis accounted for 121 of 141 Malassezia spp. isolates. Five CRC were colonized by M. p

Diagnosed skin diseases among migrant farmworkers in North Carolina: prevalence and risk factors.

Skin diseases are common among farmworkers, yet little research documents their prevalence and risk factors. This analysis documents the prevalence of skin diseases among farmworkers in North Carolina, examines variation in the prevalence across the agricultural season, and delineates factors associated with skin disease. Data are from a longitudinal surveillance study with assessments at approximately three-week intervals from May through October 2005. The sample included 304 farmworkers from 45 camps with 1048 data points. Data collection included a structured interview and a standard set of

Malassezia species isolated from the intermammary and preputial fossa areas of horses.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia-type yeasts previously have been observed on cytologic examination of the intermammary region of mares that presented with tail-head pruritus; topical antiyeast treatment resolved the pruritus. Further, Malassezia dermatitis has been observed in horses in intertriginous areas such as the udder and prepuce; the species of yeast was not confirmed. It is not known whether healthy mares or male horses can be carriers of this yeast in these body areas. HYPOTHESIS: Malassezia spp. are present in the intermammary region in healthy mares and the preputial fossa in healthy geldi

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) polymorphisms in ruminants: A review of genetic associations with health, reproduction, and production traits.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a fundamental component of the innate immune system, has been identified as a significant candidate gene for enhancing health, productivity, and reproduction in livestock. This review synthesizes and analyzes genetic association studies of TLR4 in cattle, buffaloes, sheep, and goats, assessing its significance in economically important traits. Significant evidence associates TLR4 mutations with resistance to mastitis-mainly through associations with somatic cell score-and susceptibility to several infectious diseases, including paratuberculosis (PTB), infectious bo

Application of Cellular Resolution Full-Field Optical Coherence Tomography in vivo for the Diagnosis of Skin Tumours and Inflammatory Skin Diseases: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been shown to provide non-invasive diagnosis of common skin neoplasms, especially basal cell carcinoma. OCT produces a cross-sectional view of the tissue, similar to a traditionally sectioned histopathological view, but the resolution of conventional OCT is low and thus limits clinical application. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the application ability of a full-field (FF)OCT system which was newly developed to scan the skin at the cellular level. METHODS: Patients with skin tumours or inflammatory lesions warranting biopsy were

From reactive to predictive: Advancing biologic dosing in dermatology.

Biologic therapies are targeted immunomodulators that have revolutionised the treatment of chronic inflammatory dermatoses, including psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and atopic dermatitis, offering high efficacy and safety for moderate-to-severe disease. However, standardised dosing regimens fail to account for inter-individual heterogeneity, leading to non-optimal drug exposure in certain patients. This may, in part, explain why primary non-response, secondary loss of response or adverse effects are observed in real-world practice. While empirical off-label adjustments are commonly employ

An Italian multicentre study on adult atopic dermatitis: persistent versus adult-onset disease.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory skin disease which predominantly affects children. However, AD may persist until adulthood (persistent AD), or directly start in adults (adult-onset AD). AD often shows a non-flexural rash distribution, and atypical morphologic variants in adults and specific diagnostic criteria are lacking. Moreover, adult AD prevalence as well as detailed data which can characterize persistent vs adult-onset subtype are scant. The aim of this study was to investigate on the main features of adult AD particularly highlighting differences between per

The clinical and histopathological effects of prednisone on acute radiation-induced dermatitis in dogs: a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, prospective clinical trial.

This study evaluated and compared the clinical and histopathological effects of prednisone on acute radiation-induced dermatitis (ARID) in dogs treated with 48 Gray of fractionated irradiation targeted to the skin surface. The study was designed as a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled prospective clinical trial. Twenty-two otherwise healthy companion dogs completed the clinical study. Three dogs were excluded from complete histopathological analysis because the owner declined one (one dog) or both (two dogs) biopsies. The study duration for each dog was 36 days from the start of radi

A 40-100 MHz B-scan ultrasound backscatter microscope for skin imaging.

There is a growing interest in high resolution, subsurface imaging of cutaneous tissues using higher frequency ultrasound, and several commercial systems have been developed recently which operate at 20 MHz. Some of the possible applications of higher frequency skin imaging include tumour staging, boundary definition, and studies of the response of tumours to therapy, investigations of inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, and basic studies of skin aging, sun damage and the effects of irritants. Investigation of these areas is quite new, and the role of ultrasound skin ima

[Vitiligo. Treatment of 12 cases with topical tacrolimus].

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a frequent dyschromia, characterized by achromic macules that reflect the absence of melanocytes. The cause of this selective destruction seems to be due to an autoimmune phenomenon. Tacrolimus is an immunomodulator produced by Streptomyces tsukubaensis, whose topical use has been approved for atopic dermatitis. It has been tested in other dermatoses where immunological phenomena are involved. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During the period from September 1, 2003 to April 30, 2004, an open study was carried out on 12 cases of vitiligo treated with topical tacrolimus 0.1 % tw
