Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) is a hemoprotozoan parasite affecting camels and equids, such as horses, mules, and donkeys, and is known to cause surra disease in these animals. Despite the worldwide distribution of T. evansi infections in equids, surra has not been reported in Arabian horses in Khuzestan Province for over 60 years. In September 2018, a 7-year-old Arabian mare was referred from a 10-horse farm in the suburbs of Ahvaz City. The mare presented with a history of weight loss, poor appetite, and proximity to a camel herd. Physical examination revealed a poor body condition score (B

Visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed by cytology and positive indirect immunofluorescent antibody titers to Leishmania donovani in a 7-month-old female Basenji dog from Texas. Clinical and laboratory findings included weight loss, hematochezia, hyperglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia, anemia, and neutrophilic leukocytosis. Evidence of response to treatment with diminazene aceturate and ketoconazole included improvement in the abnormal clinical, hematologic, and biochemical findings, decreased serum globulin concentration and antibody titer to Leishmania donovani, and absence of organisms in examine

Plasma samples from heifers infected with Trypanosoma congolense were shown to contain a parasite peptidase. In some instances, trypanosome peptidase was detected in plasma samples taken from heifers for up to 14 days after infections had been successfully treated with diminazene aceturate (Berenil). Trypanosome peptidase was detected in plasma using starch gel electrophoresis and also by a dot blot assay in which a McAb, raised against the enzyme, was spotted onto nitrocellulose filters which were then used to absorb enzyme from the samples. The molecular weight of the enzyme was approximatel

Eighty two cattle naturally infected with haemosporidians were treated with total alkaloid hydrochloride of Peganum harmale L. (0.5 mg/kg/day). Fifty eight cases with Theileria sergenti showed a cure rate of 86%; thirteen cases with Theileria annulata showed a cure rate of 85%; eight cattle infected with Babesia bigemina showed a cure rate of 88% and three cases of Anaplasma marginale were completely cured. The results suggested that the curative effect of total alkaloid of P. harmale was better than that of diminazene aceturate and produced minimal side effects. The alkaloid could also be adm

The treatment of human African sleeping sickness is complicated by a post-treatment meningoencephalitis that may be fatal. Using a mouse model this study assesses the use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, azathioprine, in the management of this post-treatment reaction. Female NIH mice treated with the trypanocidal compound diminazene aceturate (40 mg/kg), 28 days after infection, developed a similar post-treatment reaction to that seen in humans. Administration of azathioprine (100 mg/kg) for 5 days before and 5 days after trypanocidal chemotherapy abrogated the pathology in the cen

This study evaluated the effect of different supportive treatments on PCV replacement of dairy calves naturally infected with tick fever (TF) agents, and treated with diminazene and enrofloxacin. Five products were tested as supportive treatments in four experiments. In these experiments, we used Girolando female calves (Gyr × Holstein, genetic ratio of 15/16 and 31/32 Holstein) four to six months old, raised in pasture, naturally infected with TF agents, and infested with R. microplus. Supportive treatment was administered once on day 0 of the study concurrently with specific treatment target

African trypanosomiasis is a major neglected tropical disease with significant health and economic concerns in sub-Saharan Africa. In the absence of vaccines for African trypanosomiasis, there is a consideration for alternative sources of chemotherapy. Acanthospermum hispidum DC (A. hispidum) is a herbal species of the Asteraceae family that is endowed with rich phytochemicals with unknown mechanisms of antitrypanosomal effects. This study aimed to investigate the cellular mechanisms of antitrypanosomal and antioxidant activities of A. hispidum against Trypanosoma brucei (T. brucei), a causati

Treatment with the drugs berenil, dibromopropamidine, pentamidine and CGP-4O-215 were found to alter levels of intracellular polyamines of Acanthamoeba polyphagia trophozoites in organisms. While the polyamine, spermidine, consistently remained higher in the control organisms incubated at 8, 16 and 32 h respectively, the level fluctuated significantly from below 5% to 40% in drug-treated organisms. A novel polyamine (polyamine F), yet to be identified, representing 80% of the total polyamine extracts and seen in control organisms after 48 h of incubation (stationary phase), was seen much earli

Treatment of anaplasmosis and babesiosis in cattle is practical and effective when given early in the course of infection, before the onset of severe anemia or neurologic disorders. The tetracyclines (usually oxytetracycline or chlortetracycline) are the only effective specific compounds approved for use against anaplasmosis in the United States. Oxytetracycline, at the rate of 6.6 to 11 mg/kg of body weight given one to three times IM or IV, effectively moderates the course of infection. Chlortetracycline administered orally in dosages as small a 1.1 mg/kg will prevent infection and in dosage

A study on the economic effects of naturally acquired trypanosomiasis in sheep and goats over a period of 35 weeks under range conditions in the Kiboko area of Kenya indicated that the financial loss from reduced weight gain and death amounted to 36.2 and 62.9 Kenya shillings per head for goats and sheep respectively. This was derived from the weight loss through death together with the reduced weight gain of the survivors compared with treated animals. The study also compared the efficacy of 3 drug regimes in goats and suggests that although quinapyramine (prophylactic) B.vet.C. provided the

An IgM murine monoclonal antibody (MAb) TEA 1/23.3.4.6 raised against circulating trypanosome antigens was used in a sandwich ELISA to assay trypanosomal antigens in a trypanosome lysate preparation and in sera from goats infected with Trypanosoma brucei evansi. As little as 1.25 ug/ml of trypanosomal antigen could be detected by this assay. Following infection, trypanosomal antigens were first detected in goat serum 24 hours after the intravenous (i/v) or 6 days after the intramuscular (i/m) inoculation of trypanosome parasites. Antigen levels remained detectable during the course of infectio

Trypanosoma equiperdum is the causative agent of dourine, a venereal disease in horses and donkeys. This parasite has a widely distribution, is found in Africa, Asia, Southern and Eastern Europe, Russia, Mexico and Venezuela. The T. equiperdum is morphologically indistinguishable to other Trypanozoon species, however differs from other mammalian trypanosomes due to the fact that it is primarily a tissue parasite, generating cutaneous plaques, swelling of genitalia and neurological signs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trypanocidal effectiveness of a set of derivatives of thiosemicar

A study was initiated to evaluate two trypanocidal drugs, the prophylactic isometamidium chloride (Trypamidium) and the curative diminazene aceturate (Berenil) as to their potential for long-term maintenance of zebu cattle in a tsetse infested area of Mali. Trypamidium was administered quarterly and Berenil was administered only as animals were found to be positive for trypanosomes. During the 21-month study trypanosomiasis was the most frequently encountered disease in the cattle in the Berenil treatment group with an average of 5.5 reinfections. The predominant trypanosome species encountere

BACKGROUND: Tick and tsetse-borne diseases (TTBDs) constrain livestock production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Of this community of endemic diseases, East coast fever (T. parva) is the most important tick-borne disease (TBD) accounting for 70% of all losses due to TBDS in this region where control efforts target either tsetse or TBDs and seldom both. In those instances where simultaneous pyrethroid insecticide TTBD control is implemented, collateral benefits of tsetse control on TBD control have not been quantified. In the interest of guiding future TTBD control efforts, t

A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Ghibe valley from August to October 2010. 411 head of cattle were sampled in eight villages for buffy coat examination (BCE) and blood spots were collected from each animal for trypanosomose diagnosis by 18S-PCR-RFLP and diminazene aceturate (DA) resistance by Ade2-PCR-RFLP. Three villages were selected in a zone where trypanosomosis control operations are currently on-going whereas the other 5 villages were located outside these control operations. Twenty-four samples (5.84%) were diagnosed positive for Trypanosoma congolense by BCE and injected

There are various treatments have been reported for canine babesiosis. However, treatment methods that can eliminate the parasites have not been established. The current study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of tafenoquine against natural Babesia gibsoni infection. In total, seven dogs with canine babesiosis and one dog with canine babesiosis not controlled with diminazene aceturate were included. Oral tafenoquine at dose of 10-20 mg/kg was administered orally on days 0 and 7. The hematocrit level and platelet count of the dogs were measured. The clinical symptoms of all dogs rapidly

The present study examined the development of anaemia in Small East African goats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma congolense or Trypanosoma brucei. Experimental goats received a primary trypanosome challenge on day 0, treated with diminazene aceturate on day 49 and received a secondary trypanosome challenge on day 77 of the 136-day experiment. Both primary and secondary challenges were characterised by reduced peripheral erythrocyte counts, fall in packed cell volume (PCV), hypohaemoglobinaemia and reductions in the myeloid:erythroid ratios (M:E) compared with the uninfected goats.
